Hi and Welcome to the group! Sounds like a combination of PA and Fibro.

Which....some of us have. Good luck with the new doctor! (Va.)

Welcome --

I'm glad you found us and I hope we can be of help to you, be it information, a

shoulder to whine on, an occasional laugh, and good tips and recipes.

I too, found that a lot of the strange symptoms I have had over the years were P

and PA related. When I was diagnosed with PA it was a complete shock to me. At

the time my gp turned out to be my best asset. In fact I would still be going

to him if he hadn't had to close his practice. I always recommend you see a doc

you have a good relationship with. If you don't, find another one.

There are a lot of meds out there to try and I hope you get on some soon. My gp

said the trick is to prevent damage so you have to hit it hard. I don't know

about the pain in your skull but PA is a crafty disease, so nothing surprises

me.

Let us know what we can do to make your journey easier.

Cheri :-))

[ ] New with Questions

I'm new to the board and new to the diagnoise although not new to the

disease,PA. I've been reading your posts for a couple weeks and now

realize how many things I have lived with are from my P and PA. I've

also had lesions in my mouth and throat but it was before I broke out

with psoriasis. My PA started long before my first flare of P. My

ribs hurt more every day. Many days it hurts so much to breath. My

neck and upper back is the core of my pain. It is so bad that I can

either wash dishes or cook but I can't normally do both in one day.

Some days I can't do either. The joints from my feet to my head hurts

but some of them alternate. One day one hurts and the next another

does. It was good to hear someone else say that they did the same. I

went from supermom, superwife, and superemployee to not much of

anything. It went down hill for about three years but it has hit rock

bottom.

I am not going to a rheumy at present. I did once before I broke out

the first time with P and she told me it was all in my head along with

the other docs. Hate to go back. I went to an internist that

believes every word that I say which means a lot after the past three

years so I hate to change. Right now I'm only on pain meds and not

narcotics. Its not doing much good and I'm not fuctioning. I know

that I have to do something different and I'm going to discuss a

change on the next appointment but would like your imput. Embrel,

Remecade, Raptiva, etc. what are your suggestions and why. Also, do

any of you know if there are joints in your scull? Sounds crazy but

the top of my head hurts so much and I'm not sure if it PA or

fibromyalgia.

Hi ,

Welcome to the group. Sorry you are hurting so much. A good rheumatologist

will NOT think any of this is in your head and will likely start you on a course

of medications that will, over time, lessen some of the symptoms you experience.

Many rheumies will start you on MTX as that is widely accepted by most insurance

plans, has been around for 20 years, its side effects are known and it works for

a reasonable percentage of us. Some insurers will insist you begin with a drug

such as MTX before they will pay for Remicade, etc.

I am currently on Arava and Humira. My liver cannot tolerate MTX but seems to

be accepting Arava just fine and it has been almost a year since I first went on

it. Arava by itself did nothing for me but appears to work will in concert with

Humira. Humira is the newest biologic. I chose it over Enbrel because it comes

pre-mixed and in the needle so I don't have to fuss with it before hand and I

need to inject it only once every two weeks instead of twice a week like Enbrel.

I liked the idea of injecting one fourth as much and so far it is working

wonderfully for me. I was on the verge of needing to go on disability and now I

am able to continue working 40-50 hours a week and remain active in church and

community groups. In the event Humira stops working for me, I will not hesitate

to go on Enbrel which has given many people a new lease on life. In other

words, , there are now a number of medications out there that do many people

a lot of good and that reduce their pain and suffering.

I hope you find the right " elixir " for you very soon!

Wishing you wellness,

Kathy F.

Right now I'm only on pain meds and not

narcotics. Its not doing much good and I'm not fuctioning. I know

that I have to do something different and I'm going to discuss a

change on the next appointment but would like your imput. Embrel,

Hi ,

You MUST go back to a Rheumatologist. Now that you have had some

outbreak of P, A rheumy should be much more in tune to your disease.

I too had pain way before I ever had any P. Luckily my Rheumy was

leaning towards RA or PA, and I was trying some NSAIDS for pain when

I did have a flare-up of P. Silly me, I went back and said that I

have was having a reaction to the NSAID! It was then, that he was

more positive that I had PA, and I began learning of this disease.

If the Rheumatologist you once saw treated you poorly, try another,

but that is the proper physician to help you battle this disease.

Stay Well,

Drop the Pep, see if things improve again. If they do improve, wait a

few weeks, then start Pep again at about 1/4 to 1/2 the dose you gave

this time, see if that helps.

Tisha,

We're new to enzymes too, just started last week so I'm not sure how

helpful I'll be but how much Pep did you start him on?

I agree about the ativan. I've used it off and on for a number of years and

to me, stress is more harmful to the body than the chance of getting addicted

to ativan.

It sounds like you've been feeling awful. Many of your symptoms are very

familiar to those of us with hyperthyroid. But it does not necessarily mean

you have it. There are other reasons as well. Do have your doctor do a FT3

and a FT4 test when you see him as well as another TSH. My personal symptoms

were worsened as I was going through menopause as well and that accounted for

some of the symptoms. Is this possible?

Hang in there. Follow up with your doctor and don't be afraid to take the

Ativan if you need it. You won't become addicted to it instantly. Get some

rest if you can and read and research on the web if you can't. You can google

your symptoms and come up with lots of scarey ideas...Most of all take care of

yourself.

Hi and Welcome,

The new range recommended by the AACE for TSH is 0.3-2.5 miu/L. Studies show

that most normal people have a TSH between 0.3 and 1.0. But many people

normally run a TSH as high as 2.5. If you normally run a TSH higher than 1.0,

then

although your TSH is within the normal range it could indicate hyperthryoidism.

One random normal TSH isn't sufficient to rule out hyperthyroidism when

symptoms are present.

When symptoms are present, especially if heart rate or temperature are

elevated, the usual recommendations are to run FT4 and FT3, which measure your

levels of available thryoid hormone and to run tests for thryoid antibodies to

see

if thyroid antibodies are present. Many people with hyperthyroidism are first

diagnosed or misdiagnosed with anxiety disorders. Best, Elaine

Hi Martha -

I have GD now - but about 10 yrs ago I started having panic attacks...just out

of the blue. I thought I was having a heart attack - they thought I was having

mini-strokes, but all the tests checked out fine. I remember how hard my heart

would pound during an attack and I also asked them (once I was diagnosed) about

damage to my heart. They told me no......although now, having gone through it

with Graves, I think they might have wrong. I had all of your same symptoms,

which are pretty much the same as Graves symptoms except with anxiety there is a

sense of doom.

I agree with everyone that you need to have a complete thyroid profile just to

make sure these are only panic attacks. If all your labwork is fine then your

doctor should put you on some kind of anti-anxiety drug to help control the

attacks. I was on Buspar - and it helped me tremendously.

When you feel yourself beginning to have an attack - busy yourself. Get up and

wash dishes, clean the bathroom, go outside and walk around the yard. Do

anything to take your mind off the attack, and pretty soon you will " somewhat "

be able to control them.

Good Luck.

Lynn

new with questions

Hi everyone. I've been having many symptoms of hyperthyroidism for

the past five weeks, been to the emergency room five times, had every

test on Earth run on me, and my primary care doctor says it's panic

disorder, not hyperT. BUT, my naturopathic doctor says it looks like

hyperT to her, and that the hospital did not do a complete thyroid

panel because my TSH was techinically within normal range (0.73, when

normal is 0.5 to 6.0). My naturopath wants me to ask/demand a free

T4 and free T3 when I see my doctor on Monday, but the ER docs told

me that the TSH test is so accurate now that taking the T3 is not

needed. Had this happened to anyone?

My symptoms have included light-headedness, heat flashes, blood

pressure going up, feelings of anxiety and panic, nausea, flushed

face, slight tremor in my hands, a little weight loss, feel hot

easily, frequent loose bowel movements and gurgly stomach, pounding

heart beat, and now, for several days, my heart is skipping beats (I

was put on a 24-hour heart monitor, still waiting for the results).

I'm really scared that my heart is going to get damaged or that I'm

going to feel worse suddenly before the doctors agree that I have

hyperT. The only thing that is keeping me calm as I write is the

Ativan I took a while ago, and I don't want to get hooked on that.

Does anyone else have experience with a " normal " TSH level but an

abnormal T3 level?

Thank you for any help.

Marla,

Cochlear has a wonderful behind the ear processor called the 3G. It uses

20 electrodes, can use any of the three processing strategies available only

to Nucleus users (Speak, ACE, and CIS). It also has software support in the

form of autosensitivity, Whisper, and telecoil. Autosensitivity dampens loud

sounds to let speech come through in noise, Whisper makes soft speech clearer

in quiet conditions, and the telecoil allows for easier phone use. I hear

better on the phone than my hearing counterparts in noisy situations! The 3G

even

has 12 colors that can be changed to match whatever your daughter wears that

day. The battery life is generally super although some programs require more

power than others. The magnet in the implant is removeable for a full

strength MRI and involves only a local and a couple of stitches afterwards.

Please feel free to ask anything else that comes up for you.

Hi Sharon!

My TSH was 64 when I tested, my friend was about 125. But what the Dr.'s have all said is that it doesn't matter if it's 13 or 1300. if you're out of range it's all serious.

Hi Sharon

I used to see an endo at Duke Univ, unfortunately he retired a couple years ago, but I'm sure they have hired a good replacement. I don't personally know of any private practice endo's in that area. I've just been getting refills for my presciption thru my ob-gyn (I live in ville). I was recently referred to an endo in Morehead City because I am having problems with my dosage and I was looking for someone closer to home. Duke was a 2 1/2 hour drive for me (yuck). Sorry I'm not much help :(

Your ob-gyn can also monitor your condition, luckily in our area the ob's seem to be pretty well educated on the thyroid stuff. If your ob thinks your condition is too much for him to handle, he shouldn't have any problem giving you a referral. Good luck, I hope you start feeling better soon.

New with questions

Hi,My name is Sharon and I am 39. At an annual visit to my ob-gyn doctor yesterday, I asked to be put on an antidepressant. I figured it couldn't hurt, and there was nothing else to explain my symptoms. Well, he wanted to run some bloodwork, and called me today saying my TSH level indicated I had hypothyroidism and it could explain all my complaints.I haven't had alot of time yet to search the archives, but am so happy to have found this group. I did have a couple of questions.I know a TSH level above 4 is considered high, but what kind of high ranges (mild vs severe) are there? Mine was 13, which doesn't sound too terribly high, but my doctor was pretty concerned that I start on medication immediately. Just to have a comparison.Does anyone know of an endocrinologist in the Raleigh-Durham area that they can refer me to?Any other advice would be appreciated. Feel free to email me privately. Thanks again!!SharonShaRN@...

A little bit of Armour is waking up your cells and they are asking for more.

You need an increase in Armour ASAP. You are on too little meds. The doc

doesn't know how to use Armour but it's good that she gave it to you.

Has anyone heard of having hypothyroidism to a minor degree that will show up on

hair mineral analysis tests but not blood tests? I don't know if natural

supplements will be bad for me. My metabolic profile is SLOW metabolism, I have

extreme fatigue, brainfog, cold clammy hands, etc. I don't know what to do ! I

feel like crap and have gained about 20lbs!

Hi Gracia,

I've been away for awhile and I'm back. I am on Armour at 45mg. I

got my latest labs and was told I was now in range. Back ground my Dr

had to do the antibody test, everything else was " in range " . I still

feel fatigue. I'm 36 regular periods, on the pill. I just finished

the Thyroid Power book (library copy) and I need to purchase my own

copy. I have dropped flouride from my drinking water, no

asparmatame-two weeks ago. Low carb, high protein for almost 3

months. I exercise 3-4 times a week. Still trying to get rid of 15

more pounds. Any suggestions on where I need to go with this from here?

Thanks,

you are getting poor medical treatment and should find a doc who knows more

about Armour---you need more meds. It is quite silly to tell a hypo

person with symptoms that she is " in range " . Sometimes I am embarrassed

for these docs. http://www.armourthyroid.com You could safely double your

present dose.

It was the nurse that I talked to. I explained that I still felt

poorly, she said that I was welcome to come in and talk to the doctor.

If I had taken my meds about an hour before my blood was drawn, would

that effect the reading? The nurse said no, but I really wonder. I

will probably give it another week and go back in. My doctor is very

good about listening to me and doesn't mind an informed patient. I

just wanted to see if there was anything else that I might consider

adding or deleating in lifestyle that might help too. Thanks for you

input!

you just aren't going to get good treatment if you treat to the

tests--doesn't matter which ones you take when etc etc. It is so much

easier to treat the symptoms. You need more meds, at least try 90mg.

I took 60mg yesterday and today. I have an appointment for next week.

I'll talk to her about it. I don't think she will give me any

trouble about it. If she does, I'll get another doctor.

Are you feeling better? Good luck. 90mg is usually a good starting place.
