I do not avoid fats. I know, I know, I'm way more distal than the edge of

the earth. But the cholesterol levels drop for everyone.

I don't advocate swimming in a vat of fat. But using FF products does a

coupla things: they're higher in sugar; they come in green packaging, which

means " go " , " safe " , " have all you want, it's free " ; they taste nasty.

Fat satisfies, sugars make you crave.

I read an article recently, which I saved (somewhere), and it talks about

something I can relate to easily.

If you are an antique like me, I went to school on cereal+ milk, toast +

juice. In other words, carbs. 100% carbs, with a very slight nutritional

value. I was starved before I sat down at school. On the weekends, my dad

cooked. Bacon & eggs, sausage & eggs, other " meats " (and I use the term

loosely--is it any wonder I eye meat suspiciously?) & eggs. Occasionally

pancakes & bfast meat. But even the pancakes were suspicious, choc chips

(not in pancakes, thank you), bananas, onions! YES! But I digress. The

point being that on weekends, we had no carbs for bfast (or a single piece

of toast with the protein & fat) and we went all day long and were not

hungry. Ate a token lunch and kept on going.

Fat satisfies, sugars make you hungry.

In moderation, of course. I'm not saying to use the drippings off the

porkchops, ass bacon grease & then make gravy. Even *I* have limits.

fat absorption: Question

difference in the question I have.

> Because of the malabsorption factor of the RNY we can no longer absorb

fats properly. We can't absorb fat soluble vitamins either. Why, then, is

there such a stress put on avoiding foods with fats in them? Especially if

we are not going to absorb the fats. The fats go right through us....listen

also the reason our cholesterol decreases so significantly after RNY. So,

I know you are going to regret that typo for at least the rest of the day, so I

won't give you a hard time about it. I have never heard of that particular kind

of bacon grease, but I'm sure we'll all hear more about it soon.

I've NEVER worried about fats. I have found that my liking for them has

diminished a lot since surgery. My cholesterol, last time we checked it, and

I wasn't even fasting was 102! It may be different for those with proximal

Rny's...but I've never had a problem. I put butter and sour cream on my

potatoes, and don't ever worry about it. I even put cream cheese on my

french toast with SF maple syrup...yum! My hubby makes these high protein

pancakes that have no flour in them...just eggs cottage cheese and cream

cheese....they are gorgeous and taste wonderful. He rolls them up stuffed

with cream cheese. Now, if you want to talk about HIS cholesterol...UGH!

Wish I could absorb a bit more. My skin is sooo dry. Always rubbing creams

and lotions into it. Figure if I were absorbing enough, I wouldn't have this

problem. So, I never deliberately limit it.

What labs are you talking about ? Is there one for fats?

Okay, I just have to ask, what in the world is " ass bacon " ? My dad

used to call me " lard ass " - is that the same as ass bacon grease? I

never knew what that meant except I knew it wasn't a good thing so

I'm gonna ass-ume that the bacon from the behind ain't good either

(or the grease thereof).

So, what it really comes down to is one more of those things that dietitians and

nutritionists have been taught about " normal " people and try to pass off on us

too. Is that about right? It just isn't " politically correct " to tell people

who want to lose weight anything other than " stay away from fat " , even if it

doesn't pertain to them.

Anybody else want to jump in here and comment on this? Anybody

disagree.....want to tell me and others, why fats are still bad for us, or not

bad for us. Anybody....anybody......... I'm not looking for a heated debate,

just a valid calm discussion on the topic. I really am interested.

The dietitian told us to use real stuff. Real Mayo, cheese. Salad dressing.

She said that it was important that food taste good. Our only limitation is

carbs. I can't understand why anyone would put a person with malabsorption

problems on a low fat diet. Fats are necessary for life. I will never use

anything but butter. Of course, I have never used a lot of butter anyway.

I have never avoided fats since my surgery, although I am also very proximal. I

do not gain weight eating fat. I gain weight from eating sugar. The number of

calories in each is totally irrelevant to me. If I eat 30 gms of fat (as part of

a meal), my hunger is satisfied, I feel fine and I don't gain weight or crave

more food 10 minutes later. If I eat 30 gms of sugar I get shaky and nauseas,

light headed, and I am starving in about 15 or 20 minutes when I'm through with

the " dumping " symptoms. I then start on a world class sugar and carb craving

that could take days and sometimes weeks to neutralize.

My cholesterol is so low, it comes up abnormal on blood tests. From what I

understand, low cholesterol is not a problem in itself, but is used as a flag to

indicate malnutrition. But since all the rest of my labs are fine, it is of no

concern.

However, I must say that I learned pretty early in the game, to keep quiet about

my ability to eat some fat with no ill effects. Mostly people who know nothing

about the surgery, and even some who do know, just think I am fooling myself,

getting back to my old habits, sabotaging my weight loss, etc. So, I don't go

out of my way to mention it to anyone.

also the reason our cholesterol decreases so significantly after RNY. So,

if we don't absorb the fats, we don't absorb the calories in the fats

either, right?

> I know some people dump on fats. Is that the only reason to avoid them?

> I have been wondering about this for some time now. I get asked a lot of

questions about this surgery and I would like to be able to answer this

question knowledgeably.

Re: fat absorption: Question

Jacque, Barbara, and ,

I'm with you. I haven't avoided fats either. I am 2 1/2 yrs post-op and my

cholesterol is 135. My sister is having WLS this coming Tuesday. I have been

taking her on all her preop testings and support group meetings and nutrition

meetings, etc. I, too, feel like I need to sit quietly and shut up when

dieticians, doctors, and nutritionists start harping on avoiding all fats. I

want to ask why, but, like you said, Barbara, I think it will just be thrown

back at me, like I am the " bad " one. But I have never been able to understand

that. If I don't absorb fats, why avoid them? I like butter on a roll

sometimes. I like full fat cream cheese, and regular cheeses, and regular

mayonaise. The fat free stuff is horrendous. Why bother with it? I try now

and then. I really do. But it just sits in the fridge until it rots. It's

disgusting.

So I came to the " experts " ......you guys. You are living this. I want to know

what everybody here does. I want to know the " truth " , not some dietician's book

learning about " normal " people.

We do absorb SOME, just not all.

Only you will know, by labs, if you gain wt. But I don't even believe the

healthy fats were all that bad during the trendy period. Sure fattened

everyone up, didn't it? They eschewed fats, turned to sugar. KABOOM
