Yes, hyperthyroidism can cause elevations in one or more liver enzymes,

usually alkaline phosphatase and ALT. Other liver function tests, like

bilirubin, will be normal. The enzymes are elevated because of the higher

metabolic rate in hyperT, like faster digestion. take care, elaine

Excess thyroid hormone has a similar effect on the liver as alcohol, so

yes this could have been an indication, but livers are complex, and many

illnesses and medications will affect liver enzymes.

The main reason for the focus on liver enzymes here is that it is

sometimes used as an excuse to stop antithyroid drug treatment, I guess

the doctor starts treatment, reads that the drugs have an incredibly

rare side effect on the liver, does a liver panel and panics when the

result is slightly elevated. There is a big range between elevated, and

dangerously elevated in the usual liver tests.

Ironically PTU (the older antithyroid drug) was used to treat alcoholic

liver disease, so you can tell just how dangerous it is to give to

people with liver problems.

Even more ironically PTU doesn't really help alcoholic liver disease,

but the PTU was deemed safe if not terribly effective.

Wow! When I was ill and as yet undiagnonsed, I used to feel either hungover

on rising or " drunk " when I had not drunk any alcohol for months. I thought

I was going crazy! I'd wake up feeling dizzy and slurred my words slightly,

bumped into things, shakes, mood swings. Now I know some of those are

symptoms of Graves' Disease, but I was amamzed that it felt so similar at

the time to being drunk.

Now I don't know what the mechanics behind " feeling drunk " are... what makes

us dizzy or slurry or clumsy, but if the liver contributes then I found what

you said really interesting:

" Excess thyroid hormone has a similar effect on the liver as alcohol, so

yes this could have been an indication, but livers are complex, and many

illnesses and medications will affect liver enzymes. "

Just a thought

> oh you'll love this one - barrows inst. for neur. has a site and

i emailed them since that is where this dr is and asked how many or

do they do acm surgerys. the reply 'what is acm' this gives me an

all over warm feeling.

You have to talk to them in their language.

Ask them how many craniocervical decompressions they do, or ask them

if they do surgery for chiari malformations. There isn't a procedure

called `acm surgery'. " ACM " is mostly internet group lingo and most

people outside of this group wouldn't have any idea what it is.

What year was your son's surgery done in? I am assuming that 1900 is a

typo!

Kim

I have had these and they are not fun. I now know why babies are so fussy

when they have thrush.

I'm glad you have something to treat and hope that it will disappear

rapidly.

OK - I am not sure if I asked you guys about any of these symptoms so

here goes: 1.Nagging cough - could this be because of or a part of

having the two enlarged hilar nodes? This cough will go nuts if I laugh

too. 2.Feeling of water in my ear without any sinus symptoms? When I

yawn I get this popping/gurgling sound in my ears. 3.Pressure headaches?

It feels like the pressure starts at the base of my neck, comes up the

back of my head and it feels like my ears are going to pop from the

pressure. It takes a few minutes and the pressure feeling subsides.

This may be due to the fact that I have some bulging discs in the

c-spine but they have remained asymptomatic. Well I know that I am a

strange one, but I want to be armed for my next appointments and I don't

know if these things are significant. You don't know what to tell them.

Thanks in advance for the advice everyone. I hope everyone had great

weather like we had today in Portsmouth and Norfolk (right Tony?). I

have been airing out my house all day and listening to the robins sing.

Hope everyone gets a good night sleep. Terri G.

Oh Terri I wish I could open some windows! We've had

alot of rain & thunderstorms the last few days &

nights.

I have headaches & the feeling of fullness in my ears

but I just assume it's the pressure in my head & the

hydro so I don't even bother to ask much anymore from

the docs.
