Nothing Vicky - the thing made me so angry - like we are all lazy junk

food eaters and made our own bed so should now lie in it. I have written

to the program and wonder if I will get any type of reply. I sat here

and smoldered as they were talking and needed to vent.

Hi Barb,

You might consider logging onto ABC's web page and letting them know that their

" flat-out " condemnation of diabetics is a crock.

Great, Barb!

I'm only sorry I didn't see that program. I would have written them a letter

myself. Let us know if they reply. I might be forced to write them anyway...

I was also thinking that if no positive response then maybe Bill O'Reilly on Fox

News

could maybe do an interview with Gretchen if she is willing? I think she would

do a very

good job and has the right credentials to do it. What do you say Gretchen?

Well, a diabetic newscaster should . . . and they would present a much better

story!

Dr Bernstein and others stress the wide person to person variations so, even

if the basics are understood, individual testing for different foods is still

imperative. Show your endo the results from eight different people who did the

apple experiment conducted here. I'll send you the JPEGs if you want.

When you're ready to make that nine people who did the apple test, Sky,

please contact me off list

A Type 2 won't always need 300 strips a month, but during the learning phase

it's easy to use that many. I know I did. But when I'm not experimenting, 100

a month is more than enough. Your total strip use will be less than normal

once the experimenting is done. Maybe your endo would understand that.

The news isn't noted for doing research on what doctors tell them is so.

Doctors aren't noted for doing research but rather sticking to whatever it

was they learned in medical school from books that are repeating what

someone thought was so twenty years earlier.

My doctor...or former doctor...who refused to prescribe for more than four

tests per day certainly didn't figure that out himself. He was taught that

in medical school. When he told me that most doctors and endos would agree

with him, it's because they all had the same lessons. Heaven forbid that

any one of the would check with proactive diabetics to see what was

*really* needed. So I'm allowed 4 per day. Last night I both tested for a

sugarless candy bar with sugar alcohols, to see just how high I went with

it and it there was a long-delayed spike, and for some pasta because I

really *had* to learn how to get it right after judging too low for the

times in the past that I had pasta. Yeah, why pasta? Friends like to go to

Olive Garden and if so, I'd like to get some pasta there. So, checking

before the candy and 3 times after, and checking before the pasta and twice

after, took up more than my day's allotment right there.

So why should a newscaster do research that doctors won't do?

The news people would tell you they did research, all their information came

from the idiot doctors who don't listen to us in the first place.

A good argument. I'll use it. Too bad I won't be able to speak directly to

the endo but instead to some office staff.

Of course. You might also consider writing to DLife and suggest that they do

a program on the topic, interviewing type 2s who were fit and not

particularly overweight when Dx'd.

Barb, quick, stop watching ABC news. Did you get a clue about what

source(s) they were using?

CarolR

I think I am just going to stop watching news - period. They are all

negative and biased either one way or the other - I used to believe that

there were unbiased people in the world - don't believe that any more -

cynical side is showing now. Have no idea what their sources were - it

was just about 1 - 2 minutes long - I was left waiting for " The rest of

the story " but that never came. As I have followed all the responses it

occurs to me that we are such a small portion of the diabetic community

- people that care and work hard to make lemonade out of lemons

(sugar-free of course). I usually do not write to organizations simply

because I get too " involved " and have difficulty being objective (hmmm -

think I am biased also :)?) - guess I just wish there was a group out

there for the people who do take care of their diabetes and who try to

help others take care of their diabetes. That is what irritates me the

most - Diabetes has only one face and that was portrayed last night on

ABC - The same thing could be said about depression - it also has only

one face - " Just shake it off " - yeah right! The world opinion on these

problems will not change in my lifetime - I just hope that perhaps they

will some day change.

I don't watch TV news. I don't watch TV, period. Saves me a lot of

aggravation.

By not watching TV, I nicely avoid those Awful Commercials (one of the

main reasons I'm not a TV watcher!)

OTOH, I do read 2 newspapers daily, one of which is local, the other the

New York Times. This way, I can pick and choose what interests me.

And I read Time magazine weekly plus the New Yorker magazine. So I do

keep up with what's going on in the world.

Plus, of course, the Internet.

I am the fastest MUTE button hitter in the west, Ha Ha!!!!!!!!!!! I watch Fox

News a lot

and Animal Planet and a few other things.

I was thinking after my last post to Gretchen, you should go with her on TV as a

good

example of a Type I and you both can outwit the ADA. Just my thought for the

day.

Ummm, that would be us?

All we can do...and I'm the first to say it's hard...is to remember beliefs

of the past that were a long time dying. Washing hands before an operation

to prevent some invisible things causing cross-infection? Doctors laughed

when told that. The earth isn't the center of the universe with everything

revolving around it? They burned folks as heretics for suggesting that. I

won't even get into more recent events that we are being lied to about (but

that village in Texas is STILL missing an idiot).

The " great unwashed masses " don't give a rats rear about whether being fat

causes diabetes or not. They'll just believe what they're told, along with

" fat you eat changes to fat in the body " (a nutritionist told me that

once...I couldn't believe she was so ill-informed). If they're diabetic

their doctor and family will continue to tell them see, it's THEIR fault

they have diabetes and they'll hang their head in shame unless they somehow

find a group like this one.

Look at all of the folks here who have tried to convince someone else that

they were handling their diabetes wrong and who have had their advice

flatly ignored. Heck, look at the folks who have joined this list and,

being unwilling to believe that their doctor could possibly be wrong and us

right, have left in a huff.

It's very depressing.

SOME day all that we're saying here will be standard information for

diabetics.

Seems a lot of the medical community is in that very rut! They can't

get out. If Dr. Bernstein couldn't shout down the ignorant advice from

an ADA Educator, how could a mere patient ever hope to win against any

medical professional in the rut?

Cindy in NC

You are right Sue :) I guess what I meant to say was that there was a

group that could capture the National stage like the ADA does and be

able to get the message across that diabetes is not just the way ADA

portrays it - that there is a better way and a safer life for all

diabetics who are willing to learn a different way of living. I am not

the greatest at saying what I think - either mind goes too fast or

fingers go too fast - we have a small voice - wish it was a huge voice,

as you said.

Crying in the wilderness is easier, however, when we know that we've got

some support - like this list, and a few books out there. We can't

change the establishment way of dealing with this disease overnight, and

most likely can't convince very many doctors to change their ways. All

we can do is try to capture (with kindness) as many newbies as we can on

a daily basis and attempt to get them to try, just try, a different

way... just for a little while, just to see if it will help them to

handle their bg numbers better. Trying to change the whole world all at

once is a very stressful ambition - it raises OUR numbers. Therefore,

to me at least, it isn't worth it.

I don't know what Gretchen thinks about this, but why Bill O'Reilly? I think

you'd get a more balanced interview with Lou Dobbs on CNN.
