Great decision! Your baby will thank you for it when he gets older.

You'd be surprised how quickly he will adjust to his helmet. It will

not be as traumatic for him as you think, but you're right, it will be

for you his parents. You have to come up with a strategy to " shove

off " people asking questions. Who needs to know, will know, and the

rest... To curious strangers (cashiers in stores, passers-by, etc) who

ask why my son is wearing a helmet, I just say " It's his football

helmet. He has been wearing it from when the football season started

and will wear it until the football season is over " . If they

understand that I'm lying - well, so much the worse for them! Some of

them just say: " Is he hitting his head a lot and wearing the helmet

for protection?, and I say Yes and move on.

I have searched high and low, studied and researched the subject so

well, that I know every definition, book, study and article ever

published. I still keep receiving publications on plagiocephaly that I

requested directly from FDA, AAP, State department of Labor and

Insurance, etc, etc, etc. It does not help me in the emotional sense,

but it definitely helped me deal with doctors and insurance. It's

amazing how little medical people know about some things... But what I

am trying to say is, if you need my help with paperwork or resources,

don't hesitate to ask! I'll be happy to send you all I can, or look

together with you for something you need.

I would definitely band based on what you posted! Most babies

adjust just fine. Have fun with the band...decorate it! We put

stickers on and changed them every week or two. Sometimes I would

just change out the stickers that were getting ruined and other

times I'd change the whole " theme. " You will not regret banding!

Your child will thank you when he is older.

On the decorating subject - we got a STARband, and it already came

decorated with the pattern we had chosen during the scan. It's Dark

Sky pattern, and we love it! Other patterns come out stretched, but

because of the theme we chose, it's perfect! Everybody loves it! Check

Thanks for the decorating tips. We're actually going to be going

with Eastern Cranial Affiliates, which is local here in the DC Metro

Area and I believe there is a branch on Long Island as well. The

orthotist there has a helmet that he has FDA approval for, and we

liked the approach he outlined. It's actually a clear blastic

helmet, so I'm guessing we can go the sticker route. My husband is

all excited to put Red Sox stickers all over it now....

Hi,

I just googled the place you mentioned and it seems the guy makes his

own helmets (firt I was thinking maybe it was a starlight from

othomerica which is clear). I read an article but it isn't clear it

the band is active or passive. One difference if it is a shell for the

baby to grow into, or if it is adjusted overtime to make more room for

growth. Active bands hold the growth in prominent areas with gentle

pressure. Generally active bands work more quickly and are better

unless the baby is very young. Also I believe all the bands are FDA

approved (unless you are seeing a quack maybe). I know DOC, Hanger and

Star are approved.

When does your son get his helmet? It would be interesting to hear how

it goes. Especially since I don't remember other moms on this board

using this type of device. I'll hope for amazing results for you

little one :-)

Hey! Red Sox rule! We are big fans, too. Wait till we see them

champions this year as well! , by the way, is your husband

armenian?

Ultimately, it doesn't matter what the helmet looks like, as long as

it gets the job done! He's not going to wear it forever. I do agree

that active is better, but I know you guys must have done a lot of

search and research and have your own resources to find the best for

Hi -

Sorry to jump in here, but I was curious about the research you've

done. I was trying to look thru some medical journal websites this

weekend, but it seems like for the most part w/out subscribing you

can just see the abstracts. I'm specifically looking for articles

about the benefits of banding mild or moderate babies. My ped says

ds's head is " perfectly round " and he has " no assymetry " ...both of

which are completely untrue. I have basically identical reports from

my PT and from CT. I think I'm just going to switch peds, but I still

have this nagging doubt in the back of my head and I'd like to read

some more medical research on my own. Do you have anything you can

email to me? Ds has torticollis and plagio. CT said they don't rely

on measurements, but they did them for ins. he's 5mm off the

traditional measurement, 11mm for the ins measurement which is the

cranial vault, his midface was 2mm which she said was normal and his

skull base was 6mm off. You can see that his ears are basically in

two different places and he has forehead bossing and cheek bossing.

We're going back to CT in a few weeks (one month after 1st appt) the

tech said if he looks the same then and it was her son she'd band. If

you ahve any research articles that relate to ds case I'd love to do

some reading. Sorry this was so long and to jump in on another post!

The website for Eastern Cranial Affiliates is www.helmettherapy.com.

I think also www.eca.com. They not only work with infants, but they

provide prosthetics to a variety of patients. You can check out

pictures of the device (it is indeed similar to the Starlight helmet)

and read about how it works on the website. As many of you pointed

out, we researched it (or should I say I researched it!) pretty

heavily and decided this particular device is probably the best

option for us. It has quite the following in our area and actually

came to me with a personal recommendation from a fellow parent.

As for when, that's a great question. ASAP for me, but I'm waiting

on a call from my pediatrician - left her a message last week telling

her that I did take my son for an eval and that he meets certain

insurance criteria and that I would like a prescription for the

helmet. If she gives it to me, we can have him in it in as little as

two weeks. If she will not provide the prescription, then I need to

hunt down a doctor who will. Fingers crossed - I just don't have the

energy to hunt this week (recovering from RSV that my son passed to

me). I will definitely keep you all posted on the progress and will

have to put some pictures up.

but have not heard back - wondering if you got my message! I wasn't

quite clear about your question, and wanted to make sure I got you

right. You need articles about treating mild to moderate plagio - is

that correct?

If yes, email me, and I will send you a couple of things that may be

helpful. Hate to disappoint you, but experts don't really concentrate

on mild cases, although some information I can provide!
