Welcome to the list. My lil guy had gas problems too. I had to cut

out 99.9% of the dairy I was ingesting. Also, every time he farted a

little poop came out which made things tougher on us. The less often

she poops the more she's gonna have. Is it yellowish with curds in

it? Sometimes if it's frothy or green it can mean other things are

going on. Here we nurse on one breast per each 3 hour period when he

shows sign of a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance. That way he will always

get the hindmilk. Also, nurse on demand but I'm sure you know that

one. :)

Welcome to the list. It really sounds like you are on the right track with

the dairy removal. Make sure you give your system two weeks to clear it all

out and make sure to also remove foods that contain casein and whey as they

are forms of dairy as well. :)

Hi! My name is . I am a new mother of - born June

29th. I've had so many questions about breastfeeding and find that

other mothers have the best answers so I was happy to find this

group. I have been exclusively breastfeeding and things are

generally

going very well. However, the past few weeks has been VERY

gassy! She sometimes will writhe around for a good hour trying to

get

it out. The past few days she has been passing gas a lot and it has

an unpleasant odor. She also used to poop at least twice a day and

now its every other day or every third day but when it happens the

quantity is unbelievable! Not to be too gross here but there's so

much of it and it is sort of frothy and gooey. (sorry for the

grossness). It's almost like the gas is blocking it and once she

finally gets all the gas out it comes out all at once. I know that

the frequency of bowel movements can decrease but it almost seems

like

she should be going more frequently but the gas is blocking it or

something. I had cut down on dairy and now am going to totally

eliminate dairy. I've also been breastfeeding on one breast at a

a time b/c I heard that too much foremilk can lead to gas. I have

been giving Mylicon drops which are supposed to help with the

Welcome! I am Dawn, mom to Ibrahim (3 years, nursed 18 months), Elijah (14

months, nursed 6 months) and Ethan (2 weeks old, nursing, 5 weeks early,

VSD).

From my experience...for one, don't use the Mylicon drops to much. If she

is not in pain, let her body figure out how to do it. Use artificial means

and she may become dependent on it. Also I had been advised to give Mylicon

BEFORE eating, rather than after.

But yes, I agree, play with your diet. Take 1 thing out at a time (that

causes YOU gas), give it a week and see if it helps.

But, heh heh heh, it seems that has reached the notorious NOISY stage

:-) Always by the 2nd-3rd month my boys have gotten to a point that anyone

with a 10 mile radious knew when they were filling their britches. Grunt

groan POW. lol. I know it well! But they were rarely ever in pain

(sometimes just before they let loose....), and it was every few days and I

did get the feeling that the gas blocked the poop. They outgrew it...oh,

I'd say in time to get the yucky adult-like poop of solids!

- welcome!

I also had to remove bananas, broccoli, cauliflower, all melons to get my

little guy to be less gassy...I know everyone is different on what is

tolerable - but this all helped me. Oh and chocolate is another.

Welcome, ,

I am a two-time mom-- is 2 1/2 years and is 7 months. I

nursed for 21 months and just started solids, so we are

still nursing a lot.

The infrequent bms is a trait unique to bf babies. never dropped

below 2 a day consistently, but she was very fussy the few times that she

skipped a day.

Your description of what her stools are like is pretty normal. It can take

2-3 weeks after eliminating dairy for it to fully pass out of her system.

Citrus and acidic foods (strawberries/tomatoes) can be culprits too. If you

don't experience improvement, don't trash your diet completely, some babies

are just gassier than others.

Helping hints to ease the fuss--each time you change (wet dipes) do a

little tummy massage. I L(ove) U is the pattern. Do " I " down the right

side of her tummy as you look down on her (face to face). Then do an upside

down " L " from her left to right and then down the " I " . Complete the set

with a " U " that goes up the left, across the top (where the L started) and

down the right (like the I). All this helps move gas, etc., through the

colon.

Additionally, try laying her on her tummy along your arm with her head at

your elbow and her legs/feet dangling below your hand. This is called the

colic hold, and it relaxes her lower half (esp. with the dangling) so she

can't squeeze her but and hold things in.

Finally, swaddle her, sit her up in a swing, carseat, stroller, or hold her

in a sling so that she is bent 90 degrees at the hips. This will relax her

bottom too.

Hello Everyone!

My name is Monika, I am 24, and I am due with my first baby (boy) on Dec

27th. I am looking forward to breastfeed and hope to find help and advise

in this group. I don't have any experience at all on this subject. I heard

alot of scary storys about breastfeeding. How can i avoid sore nippels from

the very beginning? Is there anything important I have to know/do for the

first time?

Thanks!

Welcome Monika! My first baby was born Dec 27th '93 :-) That's a great date!

The most important thing to avoid sore nipples is to learn how to get a proper latch, if the baby is latched well your nipples won't hurt :-) I have nursed my last two baby's and I've never had sore nipples, they were great latchers from day one. The best way to achieve a good latch is read, read, and read some more, get help lined up now, before the baby is born. Check out your hospital's breastfeeding practice, maybe they have a lactation consultant who will be available to you. I'm sure others have more ideas :-)

I tried to bf my first but it didn't work, I am presently tandem nursing my last two though :-) We finally figured it out. You can read my bfing story online at http://www.telusplanet.net/public/jcrocker/bfstory.htm

Monika,

Welcome to the group. I would suggest getting the book The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding from La Leche League.

Monika,

I recommend borrowing The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding from your local La

Leche League, the sections on latching on and positioning are great. (I

just read the one on positioning again last night.)

I would also suggest attending La Leche League meetings before your child is

born because seeing another woman nurse her baby helps you to understand

what you read--whether you see or read first doesn't matter.

Hi Narelle, I'm Sue. I'm currently breastfeeding number 5, Lucas, he's 4

months old. He's our bonus baby, our others are 13, 11, 8 and 6.

My Sweet Adeline group competed in Atlanta about a year and a half ago, we

were seated in the Georgia dome by a group from Perth. They were SO excited

to be there and were having a ball, we enjoyed sitting close to them

because it made it all even more fun for us.

Hi Narelle. I'm Fawn and I'm also due in March (the 5th to be exact, hoping for late Feb though!) Drake is my 28mo old and still nursing daily at naptime and occasionally at bedtime. I carried Drake through the hot summer (he was born in Aug) and it was bad at times but I never felt any hotter/uncomfortable than anyone else probably was. Wishing you a happy healthy finish to your pregnancy......we just don't have much longer to go do we??? :-) Fawn

Welcome Leanne, You've come to the right place to start your research. You

can ask anything here and someone will be able to answer or guide you. It's

best to look and study all of your options. My son is 15 months old so we

have some time before surgery but I have learned so much from this GREAT

group.

Hi Leanne,

A very big welcome to you and your family. I am only a newbie too (2 weeks) and since I joined I have received information that was so hard to find for me here in Australia. I was thrilled when I found this group as I had been searching for 'something' since my son was 4 months old. He is now 17 months and I have finally found such a wonderful, supportive group.

Hope you find everything you are looking for.

Hi my name is Leanne and I was thrilled to find this group. My son will be 5 in March and has both Atresia and Microtia of his right ear. He is a wonderful boy and has no significant hearing problems. He is just beginning to ask questions about his right ear - Why it is smaller - but he doesn't seem to really be affected by it otherwise. We are starting to look for doctors to handle his surgery and to determine what age will be appropriate. Our doctor here in Cleveland has been very good about testing him and explaining the situation, but I feel we need to meet with a few doctors to make sure that we select the best we can. Nate's current doctor seems to think that the artificial ear attached to the bone with a couple pins is the best way to go. Personally, I'd rather he did nothing than have an artificial ear, but all this surgery to do reconstruction doesn't sound like the safest choice either. I would love to hear from anyone who has had the surgery done and how you chose your doctor. I have heard of Dr. Eavey in Boston, and I have seen a number of doctors on the internet, but I can't just blindly select someone. Also, I have an insurance question. Does anyone know what happens to coverage if you have a doctor in your area that may be capable of performing the surgery, but you select someone out of state because of their expertise in the area?Thank you for your help,Leanne
