A lot of people discover they are (or really HAVE been) lactose intolerant after surgery. It does depend on how much you are bypassed (from what I have heard). Although I believe even if your doc says " no milk " some people still are able to tolerate it. I, on the other hand, haven't been able to tolerate milk (nor my family due to my HORRIBLE gas and diarrhea and cramps LOL) so I have chosen not to do milk. If you check the ingredients on milk cartons, there is anywhere from 12 to 22 grams of sugar in an 8 oz serving of milk along with 80 to 140 calories. Those calories really serve no purpose, and the sugar you will absorb into your body, which slows your weight loss down. As my surgeon says " milk is for babies " . I haven't had a glass of milk in nearly 7 years :-) and I do NOT miss it. I have had sips here and there, but that's it. Sometimes foods have hidden milk in them, i.e., fetaccini, creamed soups, etc. Have to also be careful of those. Guest guest
But how much of those 8 grams of protein do you think you're absorbing? And compare that with the sugar - which you're absorbing every gram of (and probably some extra grams for good measure - sugar is like that It just amazes me what a nutritionist will tell people to do. If she's studied nutrition and GB then she should know that we don't absorb protein from food well, but that we do absorb sugar. You'd be so much better off making your shakes with water and eating a bite or two of chicken if you really want that small percentage of the 8 grams of protein that you might absorb. Better yet, have an extra protein shake (made with water), then you know that you're getting protein you can actually use! ------------------------------------------------ Terry Mayers 5DollarHosting.comT http://www.5dollarhosting.com (877)-838-HOST / .... because it shouldn't cost a fortune to make a fortune! Guest guest
Pam, I trust my surgeon also and the patient advocates (nutritionists AND patients), my surgeon having done the gastric bypass since the early 70's and sees what the long-term results are and how to be successful. Â He has told us even before surgery to not have milk postop - milk is for babies. Â I believed him, and whenever I have been tempted to drink a sip, I suffer, my family suffers. Â The extra 8 grams of protein and 12 to 20 grams of SUGAR from milk are not worth the pain and agony, nor the probable weight gain or slowing down of weight loss to me. Â Who do I trust? My surgeon, long-term postops, and ME - seven years out next month. Â We learn from our mistakes, unfortunately, not always the easy way. Doctor's rules and MY rules as I cannot tolerate nor am I willing to partake of 45 grams of sugar in a 6 ounce glass of juice. As far as fruit, there are few fruits that I tolerate without dumping, one being pears. Apples make me puke, oranges dump, strawberries, a few are okay, etc. Therefore, I DO mind the natural sugars. Guest guest
Are you a nutrionist? Just wondering. As for the sugar in the skim milk, it's not like they add pure sugar to the milk. From what I was told by my nutrionist, (I mean, what proof is there that she is out and out wrong as you are insinuating?) That 8 grams of protein pushes my 1 1/2 scoops of Designer whey up to my needed 30 grams of protein per shake. I am not lactose intolerant, have had no problems as of yet, and with what little I do put into my body right now, the " sugar " in the skim milk really doesn't bother me. I appreciate, as I always do any suggestions that are thrown my way.....But, my surgeon and nutrionist (with many, many years of treating bypass patients between them) are BOTH wrong on the issue of 8 small ounces of milk in a protein shake? I welcome any proof that my body is 100% NOT using the skim milk at all, and if provided with that information you can bet I will take it directly to my nutrionist and my surgeon. I am actually seeing both of them this coming Weds. Thank you again. Pamela BTW, I do have 2 protein shakes a day....that's totals me to around the 60 grams of protein mark. I am 5'10 " and my intake on protein should be around the 80 mark.....The rest of my protein I get from 'foods' that I eat. " Complete healing depends upon our ability to stop struggling. Guest guest
Nope, not a nutritionist. Web designer and and owner of a web hosting company actually, which clearly qualifies me to give nutritional advice. Ok, that was a joke. I'm just someone who has listened to the right people and done a lot of research on my own. There's no insinuation that your nutritionist is wrong. I said that I disagree, and I do. you're right, they don't add sugar to milk. There's no need to! There's 13 grams of sugar in 8 ounces of milk (1%, that's what's in my fridge). Whether it's added sugar, or sugar that occurs naturally in the milk, it's still sugar, and every single gram of it is absorbed. If you want to make your shake = 30 grams of protein (which is a good thing to do - maximize what you can absorb with each shake), why not add an extra 1/2 scoop of powder and make it with water? There's less than 1/2 g of sugar in that 1/2 scoop and you know that you can absorb the protein. Adding 8 oz of milk is adding 13 grams of sugar and you can absorb very little of the protein. I wouldn't say that your body is NOT using the skim milk. Your body is getting a nice big dose of sugar that it's using completely, and a smidgen of protein possibly. Not a worthy trade off IMHO. If you're still in the honeymoon phase of your weight loss, you probably won't notice what the sugar is doing to your weight loss because you're going to lose anyway. It's when you're past that stage and your weight loss has stalled, or worse, started to reverse, that you'll see what the harm of the sugar is. ----------------------------------------------- Terry Mayers 5DollarHosting.comT http://www.5dollarhosting.com (877)-838-HOST / .... because it shouldn't cost a fortune to make a fortune! Guest guest
PLENTY of people handle 'natural' sugars....ie: fruit, skim milk. Again, with the small amount of food I actually put in my mouth there is no problem here. I am 27 days out and have followed my instructions post-op to a " T " , I have lost (not gained from having skim milk in my protein shakes) 35 lbs.
