Guest guest Report post Posted January 6, 2005 Hi Pam, A very warm welcome to the group. I am sorry your daughter has HSP though. I have had IgAN and HSP since my teens too. My first symptoms were in my early teens and now over 30 years later I am still not quite at end stage. Remember that the majority do not progress to end stage. Also, like your daughter experienced the labs including protein spill can get worse with a viral illness. If that is the cause, her next 24 hour urine should have her back at her baseline. Pam, although I have had IgAN and HSP, I have lived a wonderful adult life. I went to college, I got married at 22 years old, have raised two daughters who are now in their 20s, have been very active in my church, I work full-time and I have not let this disease dictate my life. Rather, I have treated it as an obstacle that I need to manage. True the last few years it has slowed me down, but then again I am getting pretty close to end stage now so I am sure that is the cause. After I get a transplant, I will be good as new :-) I understand it is hard when it is your daughter, but Pam, this is manageable. Even the worst possible of reaching end stage is just a life change, just requiring an adjustment. We are here to support you along the way, and wish you and your daughter all the best. It might go down on its own, but if it doesn't, they should be able to get it down with the appropriate meds. Keep us posted, and good luck with the urinalysis in 3 weeks. I'm sorry your daughter is having problems at such a young age....it's always hard to hear of kids with this. Respiratory infections can cause a jump in both blood and protein in the urine. Once the infection clears things tend to settle back down to their pre-infection stages. I do hope her next 24 hour shows things back down where they should be. Have they talked about doing a biopsy to confirm IgAN if her protein spill is still high? I just found this out today so I can understand how you feel. I have to make an appt with an ear nose & throat specialst & then maybe a surgeon. We care here and we can help if only with support. I have been trying to get pregnant for a little over a year and 1/2 now and he decided to check my thyroid. He felt a lump. He had me go for an ultrasound and found there are four. The largest is a little over 2 cen. He had me go for a biopsy and they found that the nodules are follicular neoplasm and I have to have them removed becuase they can not tell if they are binign or not. I meet with the surgeon on Thursday. I have so many questions I am not sure what to ask first. Is depression and anxiety linked to this. I feel like I am going crazy at times. I am usually a very active person. I love doing sports and others activities. But i tire so easily. I was on the pill for a very ling time and got off it well, almost two years ago. I felt myself changing soon after that. My doctor said my body just needed get back to "normal" but I have just gone down hill. So, i put up with it for a little while but it just got worse. The past year has been getting more difficult. I am always tired. I don't feel good at all. I have anxiety attacks or get really depressed for no reason. The specialist said that the surgeon will decide on whether he will take out half the thyroid or the whole thing. Is there any questions I should ask the surgeon about which one is better? I guess I am just scared. My experiences with surgery are not good. I don't want to have to do this again. What this means is she has cellular destruction of the thyroid cells but instead of dying off they are turning into something else.. a cancer cell usually loses the DNA code that most cells have to die off, and is able to duplicate its own code and form a new growth..this is how cancer starts and spreads. 70 % of all thyroid cancers and the most treatable with the highest success rate is follicular cancer of the thyroid..This is because they start new neoplasms at the site of destruction which become there own growths and are usually encased .. This definitely needs attention and further follow up..some docs do get confused because Follicular cells are common in the cell destruction seen in thyroids either from chronic inflammation or long term hashimoto's and it is benign..but neoplasms are not benign.. I was diagnosed with thyroiditis last year after having very troubling symptoms of hyperthyroidism: insomnia, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, heat intolerance, face flushing, etc. I was placed on anti inflammatories, which helped, but then my blood tests came back as hypothyroid, so I was put on Synthroid. In the midst of all of this, I was taking Lexapro and Ativan at night for sleep because originally, my dr. thought I had an anxiety disorder, and not a thyroid problem. So I was trying to get off of all of those meds while taking Synthroid. Now I am currently off of all meds other than Synthroid and my doctor has me taking 50mcg one day and 75mcg the next day and my TSH is 1.5. I am also trying to get pregnant, so my doctor wants me to have my TSH between 1 and 2. The only problem is that I am still having some hyperthyroid symptoms now. I get heart palpitations with shortness of breath, flushing, and some difficulty sleeping, although not as bad as it was before. The doctor told me that I have to " deal with " these symptoms because my TSH has to be between 1 and 2 in order to safely conceive and carry a baby to term. He won't lower it, even though I feel I am having some hyperthyroid symptoms. I was wondering if anyone else has had an experience like this or had any advice on whether or not this is a healthy thing to do? Thank you!
