Guest guest
Okay, I will jump in. How many remember the old Grey sheet in Overeaters Anonymous or the Orange sheet or the blue sheet. 12 years well spent. I learned to cope with a lot but also learned how to have *fat serenity* and could not keep my weight off. I still love the 12 step program and use many tools and steps daily. But, without this surgery I never could have kept on. I do not attend meetings but love the ideas. Guest guest
I've been wracking my brain trying to remember the name of that first diet soda that came out in the fifties I think it was. It was vile....but I remember drinking it like crazy because it was fizzy...and didn't have calories in it. My mom took me to my first diet doctor at age 10. I started my own starvation type diet at age 8, and mother said she was so proud of me...I can't even imagine. I've seen pictures of me at age 8, and I wasn't even fat!! Mother was fat, but was projecting herself on me. By age 10, I was fat from my attempts at dieting early on. I got into the heavy diet drugs at age 12....and was given speed by my doctor through my pregnancy when I was 17 years old to keep from gaining weight in pregnancy!! I gained about 12 lbs. It's amazing the baby was normal. I was really addicted to amphetimines getting to the point that I needed to take them just to feel normal. That was scary!! And in the days before " drug rehab " or doctors even taking note of such things. I kicked that habit on my own...and was sick for a long, long time. I was so tired all the time I could barely lift my head off the pillow. I still dieted though..as if my life depended on it. I used to look at people heavier than me...and say to myself...there but for a thousand diets goes I! But now I know in retrospect that in a few years..there because of a thousand diets would go I!! I guess we have all lined a lot of doctors wallets and also the diet industry. I'm glad we have finally found an answer for all these years of abuse. It's just all so sad. Guest guest
How about Tab? Yuuuuuuuuuuck. I rather like Diet Rite, esp as opposed to NO carbonation at all. LOL! My mom & g-ma were death on sugar, but I didn't care, since I only wanted things butter would melt on. They had candy hidden everywhere. Go to pull out a clean towel & unleash an avalanche of stash. Sigh. Put them all away, pretend I never saw 'em, but I forgot anyway. I didn't graze and rarely had those things. Sugar items did not interest me at all until 2 yrs post-op. It's odd that as much as my female relatives fought ( & lost ) the battle with sugar, THEY became diabetic, but stayed under 200#. My main form of sugar was milk, but I never quite got diabetes & I was the only one to reach Morbid status. Thanks, www.vitalady.com Re: Re: old diets > Gads, a depressing walk down memory lane... diet rite soda was THE drink, > talk about seeds of sugar fear. Guest guest
OH YES! Eileen Feather & it was bought out by Golden Venus. I can't believe I did that in the 70's. I didn't have the gas money OR the bridge toll for the bridge and still, I WENT. The sweat things they had? Plastic balloons that they wrapped around your thigh or middle or arm and then you moved around for awhile and sweat off a few inches. It was great, til you showered, of course and rehydrated. What a gimmick. And yeah, those rolling barrels, they were supposed to break down the fat so when you exercised, the fat fell right off. And someone stole my CUTEST sandals out of the dressing room! Guest guest
I have to agree with this happening in my own life also. After many many years of dieting up to 373 lbs, I stopped dieting, accepted that I would always be fat and just ate what I wanted, when I wanted...and remained at or near that weight for years, until deciding on the gastric bypass. I didn't lose by eating when I wanted, but I didn't gain either. Guest guest
The first " diet " I can remember being on was pure speed. It was prescribed to me at the ripe ole age of 10. I remember taking one that the first morning, and going to school STONED!! My eyes looked like platters. Those of you here who have met me should know that I talk a mile a minute...typical East Coaster. Well, that day I was ZOOOMIN! Mom took one look at me when I got home and dumped them down the toilet. Darn..they were fun! hehe The other drastic thing that they did to me was put me in a " hospital " for 3 months. I had to finish 8th grade there...no graduation for me. They did nothing to teach us how to eat..just fed us. LOTS of lamb chops for some ungodly reason. It was in Philadelphia, and there was a rough bunch of kids there. I was knocked out with a vase, and chased with a broken bottle. They were very naive there. They controlled your food, but there was an open coffee pot with sugar next to it, a milk machine, and a baby food cabinet with no lock (you know you are desperate when you're excited sneaking baby food!). Oh..and the snack cabinet was locked, but you cold pull it out and stick your hand in and snitch cookies. I did lose 40 lbs, but gained it all back as soon as I was paroled...er released. Guest guest
Don't remember the name, but I do remember going to a place with those machines...and the one with the little rolling pin thingies that you laid over and it rolled around..for your abs, I guess. And the puny little model-type aerobics instructors in the tight little exercise suits that made you want to die because there was no way you could keep up. Death was preferable to the lack of oxygen from trying to do the things she expected. But, if you didn't do it, you were totally embarassed and out of place for NOT doing it. And if you stopped going, you were a total failure at life, so you kept going until you just didn't care anymore, and accepted that you WERE a failure.....one more time. Chrissie RE: old diets HEY!
