I work in a very regulated industry (education). We're self-regulated, resulted by the states, and regulated by the feds. Between all three, we have like a zillion consumer protection clauses. Guest guest
In high school, when I was SOOOOOOOO fat at 130, my mom bribed me to lose 15#. So, I ate once/day. Cheese, lettuce on Hollywood bread? One glass of milk or grape juice. For a month. It worked. Lost the 15'#, got my reward and was forever launched on my cycle of starve and regain. Did it again when I was 19, dropped 35# that time, got down to 119. Held off almost a year. Did it again when I was 27, again 35# that time, but only down to 135. Held off almost 3 yrs. Good thing I had no labs during this time. Did it again at 31, 60# this time (low of 125, but sick), got sick in there, but held it off for 7 yrs more or less. Started with 6 meals/week, ended with 5 meals/week and I use the term loosely. Pile of salad with a sprinkle of cheese for protein & 2 croutons to make the protein complete. Yeah. SO nutritionally sophisticated. LOL! But milk, always milk and coke. Sugar was not the culprit in trend at the time. Fats were just coming into fashion as the enemy. I was already using skim milk, so what'd I have to worry about? ROTF! I can see your eyes bugging out, checking the incoming to be sure it's ME saying this stuff. Then the last time, NOTHING I did would make it go away. I could not stop the onslaught when the regain began, either. Then I quit smoking and it picked up speed. I constantly hurt myself from bumping into things that I could slide by " yesterday " . Gained 70# in 9 months. Wow. I was lucky my skin got out of the way! Guest guest
OMG! Metrical! LOL! Then my whole diet history was a lie, cuz I LIKED this stuff and my mom & grandma didn't stop me, but didn't make me take it, either. Ahhhhh, the seeds of being a chocolate " protein " lover were sewn early. And fear of sugar was sewn early, but not label reading. I guess I should check out some " diet " museum some day and check the sugar g in Ayds & Metrical, huh? Wait. They weren't listed. LOL! My family used Sucaryl--the glass bottle with the " drop " shaped top? I think it's still out there. Guest guest
My first diet was total fasting for two weeks. It makes me sad to remember it. It must have been around 1968/69. My uncle was a big diet doctor on Long Island. He believe that it was healthier for obese people to loose the weight quickly than stay fat. But I was only 15 and about 40 pounds overweight. I ate nothing for two weeks but too various pills (uppers, mostly) and spent two weeks high. That was before nutritional supplements. I lost 25 pounds. I remember the first day back on food - I had my first huge binge, eating potato chips, cake, anything I could stuff down, and got really sick. I think I gained back the weight immediately, and then some. That was the beginning of the yo-yo life that eventually brought me up to 350 lbs. Plus, I was then stealing diet pills from my mother's drawer, and continued to take them on and off for years. My uncle became rich as women came from all over to be treated by him. The whole thing makes me angry to think about. Helene RNY 12/22/99 350/

Guest guest
You hit it on the head, when I quit smoking I had taken a sedentary job for the first time when nothing moved but the pencil I pushed and I began smoking like a chimney so I quit and Lord, the weight just piled on and the REAL struggle began, I jumped to 260, each time I'd loose I'd regain like a freight train and add an extra 50 lbs. In high school I was " FAT " at 165lbs at 5'8 " tall... well, compared to Twiggie yeah. Society is moronic sometimes. Guest guest
Hey I forgot about Phen-Phen, lean cuisine, & TOPS !! there are probably others too... amazing what we did to ourselves over the years... I started with the diet doc & uppers when I was like 12 years old !!! It definitly started me on a lifetime of diet struggles.... My father was a wholesale soda distributer and we had diet soda when it first came out...and I do remember sucryl too !!!! I still prefer the taste of sacharine (like sweet & low) to the newer Equal products...just doesn't taste the same !! Bonnie

Guest guest
> So, what other " smart " things did you all do? > my families answer to dieting was a so called 'diet doctor'. I started seeing him when I was in 7th grade. he gave you a shot of some sort that had you peeing your brains out within about 20-30min. we could barely make the drive back home! I have no idea what it was but diuretic springs to mind. then we got the very best of 'uppers', speed, amphetamines. one for before each meal. we lost tons of weight. of course at some point you have to go off the lovely little black beauties and come back to earth. then you regain the weight and repeat the process. I'm sure it was about every two years we would go see Doc s. we'd see him regularly which was weekly for our little stash of drugs and after about 6-12mon. we had lost enough weight. than a year or two later we'd go again. of course after my second trip to him, this was in the 70's!!! [sex, drugs, rock 'n roll] I was in HS and many fellow students realized I had the makings for a wonderful party - an evening on high - multiple black beauties were quit a little money maker. well I digress. as far as I know Doc s was still in business when I left NJ in 1989 but I believe he closed his officers shortly after that. that was the best diet for actually dropping the pounds but the diet I enjoyed and could stick to the best was my own chocolate and water diet. I could live on hershey bars and water, it was great. see I didn't do the popular ones like weight watchers, jenny craig, optifast. I made up my own - something I knew I could stick too. the apple and chocolate milk diet was a huge success too! its no wonder my thyroid thinks it died and my metabolism can't win a race with a turtle! Oh OH Ogh Oh! And what about Jazzercise??? And Weight Watchers. I used to fly in a private plane from Phoenix up to Lake Havasu with the ladies that owned the Arizona WW franchise. Yeah I was their success story, at my first meeting somebody asked me when I made goal and how long did it take (I was a very fat 130 pounds in my mind.) What kills me is all these places let me join when my weight problem was only between my ears! OH yeah, Anyone try hypnosis???? It took me a long while to accept that it worked and a longer time to have the courage to believe it just might work for me.>> I didn't have to be convinced but I do think all my past diet failures are why my husband had no faith in this working for me. He watched me try diet after diet after diet and many exercise programs as well, only to see me lose almost nothing and just gain even more once I gave up. About 4 yrs. prior to my WLS, I figured out that diets DON'T WORK and quit them. Wonder of wonder, I quit gaining! No, I didn't lose much but to just hold steady felt like a miracle for me and I resolved to just be happy where I was. Of course, eventually health problems started popping up and I reached desperation point where my serious look into surgery started. It wasn't until I drug Matt's butt with me to some support group meetings and he saw right before him the proof that surgery works that he was willing to support me at all in this. And now of course, he is my biggest supporter! He even carries my before & after pics around with him and shows them to everyone who will let him. And he's been known to give them away to people and I have to keep printing up more for him. LOL And yes, I remember Aydes...my mom used to take them and I would sneak them from her like they were candy. I didn't even have a weight problem then! Guest guest
Diet pills from about age 10 until age19. By the time I was 17, I was so whacked out from the diet pills and the harassment of being overweight, that I was also on tranquilizers. Um, hm...diet pills (legal speed) AND tranquilizers. I would either be up all night cleaning everything in sight or sleeping for days. Those diet pills were eventually taken off the market. Between the pills and during the pills were many many other diet programs....soup diets, 1000 calorie diets (from the same doc that gave me the diet pills). Later came weight watchers, TOPS, liquid protein diets, fasting, Dexatrim. There was another over the counter pill to speed you up too, the one college kids take to stay awake...oh yeah, Vivarin, I think it was called. Lets not forget the shots. I don't know what they were, maybe thyroid shots? I have probably forgotten a bunch more. I've tried them all. Guest guest
Okay, I will jump in. How many remember the old Grey sheet in Overeaters Anonymous or the Orange sheet or the blue sheet. 12 years well spent. I learned to cope with a lot but also learned how to have *fat serenity* and could not keep my weight off. I still love the 12 step program and use many tools and steps daily. But, without this surgery I never could have kept on. I do not attend meetings but love the ideas.
