Guest guest
It all depends on your pituitary. If it is hypersensitive to you adding thyroid or not working properly (low TSH) it will drop too low in it's production of TSH and slow thyroid output too much. But, if it is functioning normally, taking low levels of thyroid should not make you go more hypo. Guest guest
Hi Zina and yes, we remember you, dear one. Sure glad to read you found a doc to prescribe Armour. Zina, Armour is not a weight loss pill, and for your doc to say that you would start losing weight in two weeks implies it. What Armour does, WHEN you find your optimal dose, is return your metabolism to normal, and that can take time, not two weeks. Then, combined with exercise and low-glycemic eating, your chances of losing weight are MUCH greater! Armrou is also initially a diuretic, and you might notice that. And as far as reducing your Armour to one grain and adding the Synthroid, BIG MISTAKE, Zina. Tell the doc that you want to stay on the 2 grains Armour, and slowly increase the ARMOUR. It's the T3 and T2 in Armour that will help you, NOT the sole T4 in Synthroid. Armour contains T3 and T4. T3 is fairly immediate, and that is why you are feeling a bit better. But T4 is not immediate. It's a storage hormone that is meant to convert to T3. But it can take at least 3-4 weeks before you begin noticing the effects of the buildup of the T4. SO....it's wise to stick with that 2 grains another few weeks. If you feel you still have symptoms of hypo, you can raise again--perhaps to 2 1/2 grains, and hold that a few weeks. Etc. Guest guest
Thank you so much for answering! I have been on Armour for 6 weeks now...only on 2 grains for 2 weeks, before that I was on 1 grain for 4 weeks....my dr. said (at my last appt 2 weeks ago) that my body made T-4 but it didn't regulate it or something like that....he also said w/my diet that I have been on and the exercise I do that w/in a couple of weeks (which makes a total of 6 weeks on armour) that I should start losing(he didn't say fast, but said I should see a difference)... He is totally all about taking armour so that is why I was wondering what he thought would be the benefit of taking both...If you can understand my ramblings..LOL please help! Guest guest
Just wanted to chime in here and say that I have NEVER HEARD OF ANYONE losing weight after only 2 weeks of thyroid meds of any kind! I have fought my weight all of my life - probably mostly bec of a low thyroid problem - and it has taken me months and months and months to see any weight loss, and that is being on 2 grains of armour thyroid a day, adding phentermine diet pills and taking myself off of birth control pills. I have finally lost 11 lbs but it has taken more than 14 weeks to get 11 lbs off, and that was only after finally starting to lose after being on the armour thyroid for 10 months. And for the record, I eat around 1000 to 1200 calories a day, drink way more than 64 oz of water a day, do a lot of walking, etc etc etc. To lose weight with a low thyroid (in my professional opinion LOL) takes a lot of work and time. Shomon's books on The Thryoid Diet seem to say the same thing to me and basically say that someone with a low thyroid (that is being treated) should expect to lose about 1 pound a month. sorry - just the facts as I know them - maybe others have a different experience with their weight loss. But I would definitely not stop taking armour thyroid to switch to a different thyroid med! I'm thinking of buying stock in armour thyroid myself! Guest guest
Hi Zina. Hmmm. Can't figure out what your Doc was trying to tell you, but know this: your thyroid makes T4, T3, T2, T1 and calcitonin. Armour gives you the exact same hormones! Synthroid, on the other hand, ONLY gives you T4, which is a storage hormone. That is ONE of the reasons why Synthroid, by itself, doesn't work well, and ESPECIALLY for weight loss. Synthroid doesn't directly give you any of the others!! You will get plenty of T4 in the Armour, PLUS the other important direct hormones. Don't look at your doc as if he knows all. Docs do NOT know all. And when it comes to thyroid, they are SORELY ignorant. Patients have become FAR more knowledgeable when it comes to thyroid and medications. Yes, if you stay on the Armour, and work to find that optimal dose, you will lose weight. Remember that the optimal dose will put your free T3 at the top of the range, if not over, and your TSH will be suppressed. Janie ( > Thank you so much for answering! Thanks, > Zina _______________ I can't think of one. I think that would give you a lower thyroid dose since about 74 mcg Synthroid is equal to 1 grain of Armour. So, it seems to me he is lowering your overall dose. Especially if you want to loose weight, you need to make sure you have good levels of T3. This is just my personal opinion, but if you got up to 3 grains, I think your life would change dramatically. It did for me and I lost weight, too.
