Thanks Mike I guess that I should have been more specific I'm still

having all this going on they (the docs) gave me protonix and

sucralfate to keep my ulcer from actively bleeding again and for the

stricture we are now waiting for my military insurance to ok the

procedure to fix this stricture until then I miss solid food but do

find the fruit juice no sugar added popcicles very refreshing. Come

on lets face it there is only so much you can do with chickn broth.

As to the kids at my old job I did consider running them down in the

parking lot with my Dodge and then decided that one of these days

something will happen to them that causes some kind of pain and

maybe they will reflect on everything they have done in there life

that hurt someone. I always try to tell my kids do unto others and I

hope that they will abide by that. Of course my manager on duty told

me that I shouldn't get to mad at them that they were just kids and

that they didn't know any better. In what world is it ok to put a

foreign substance in someones drink? I ever catch my kids doing that

it will be a lesson that will not be

forgotten.

Jessie,

Do you drink coffee? I know this has come up before but some people on

here do drink coffee and they were never told not to........But I go through

Kaiser and they said no coffee, that it could give us ulcers on the surgery

site. Its the caffeine that can irritate the surgery sites and do

this.......Just a thought. My parents were in the military I know that the

doctors can be less than thorough with the patients.

My doctors didn't seem to get into the caffeine hurting anything with

regards to the surgery. I guess what my surgeon does in the surgery

doesn't involve any staples/stiches but that they burn/heat or

something the pouch together really well. I'll check on my next

appointment next week Tuesday.

Anyway, they say the caffeine dehydrates you so drinking it is bad

for your water intake. That makes sense but I'll still have a tea

once in a while. Just this morning I had a skim milk Chai latte. I do

that maybe once a month at the most.

I don't really miss the caffeine I guess. I do sometimes miss the

charge it used to give me after a night I had trouble sleeping. But

then that was probably due to too much caffeine the day before. It's

a vicious cycle.

They told me in the meetings and in all my prior apointments about

coffee and caffiene and smoking that all of that could cause ulcers

since I never really cared for coffee (was more of a rootbeer fan)

that was no problem. I quit smoking 8 weeks before WLS (have an urge

too pick one up when all 3 of my daughters want to pull each others

hair out) that can't be it. I drink a lot of the Propel and diet

rootbeer. I tried drinking a glass of juice and dumping syndrome was

not any fun!! Is there a juice that would be safe for me to try? Or

is it more of a trial and error thing? Right now I can't even keep

my pro-v shakes down because they are to thick. I'm so tired and

weak it takes everything I have to get up in the mornings. But the

doc said that once I get the stricture taken care of that I should

be able to get back to some sort of normalcy. Since may 4th I am

glad to say that I have lost

54lbs.

I think that today so far has been the only day that it hasn't

rained in my neck of the woods. But here in Florida if you need a

good forcast just stick your head out the window. When you first

started drinking Crystal Lite did it leave a bad after taste in your

mouth? I have trird everything from more water to less water even

putting some splenda or equal in it. I have found that the closes

thing that I have found to lemonade is water a couple of lemons and

some splenda. I started cooking with that everything turns out just

about the same but my husband being a cornbread eating southern boy

from Texas he says he can taste the difference. He says that's what

he misses the most is my southern cooking. To tell you the truth I

love cooking now more now that I have had WLS. Don't know why but I

do. But my husband said that we are going back home for thanksgiving

cause I'll cook healthier and he wants a good fried turkey. LOL I

don't even really miss food that much. The WLS changes everything.

And with everything that has happened so far I don't regret it one

bit.

I drink juice that contains less than 6 grams of sugar per serving. I have

found orange juice, lemonade, grapefruit, and cranberry. I don't drink juice

often, but when I do I have one of those. I usually drink Propel and Crystal

Light. I only drink the juice when I need my fruit serving and don't feel like

chewing.

I would love to have some orange juice. The acidity in the juices

don't bother

Im with you on the food, I dont hardly eat much anymore. I live alone so I

have started to feel like what is the point of cooking anything when I can

only eat a few bites and then I am stuffed. Im so happy that I like crystal

light, I hear allot of people say they dont like it, if I didnt I dont know

how I would get all the water in. I am drinking like 100oz. of crystal light

a day now that its so hot......

There is another difference in doctors........I have been told not to touch

any carbonated drinks like every for the rest of my life! I have not had one

since the surgery. We were told the carbonation will expand and can even

rupture a surgery site. Its a trip how people are told different

things......

oh yeah I was told that I should have diet soda in moderation but

was also told to let the soda get flat to where there is not much

fizz left in it and to even add a little water to the drink to

flatten it out. So when ever I want a diet soda I shake it up for a

few minutes then add a little water to it and let it stand in the

fridge for a couple of hours. It's not the same but at least once a

week I have a watered down flat rootbeer and that satisfies my

craving. Then I'll pour the rest out cause it taste so

flat.

My surgeon's group tells patients not to drink carbonated beverages

for 6-12 months because it makes you feel like " you're having a heart

attack " . Damn. That's quite the deterrent! I've not drunk carbonated

beverages since Jan and might not even after a year. I've probably

saved hundreds of dollars not buying them especially at restaurants.

Thats odd we had a guest speaker at my last meeting before I had WLS that said

that he drinks diet coks. Never once did they say the carbonation would make you

fel like you were having a heart attack. That is so weird. How do you handle

going to restaurants? I still haven't been able to walk into one. What do you

order?

Restaurant orders are a great question. I've sort of developed it

into a plan of attack if you will. I tend to over analyze things and

am very competitive/aggressive with some things. I've tried to apply

that to eating and weight loss now.

Ok so I walk into a restaurant with my family or friends and we're

going to sit down. I can't stand smoke anywhere/anytime so bars are a

problem from the get go. But sometimes if I'm far enough away I'm

okay. Once we're seated I rarely order anything to drink but

occasionally will get a water and very rarely an iced tea

(because " real " drinks are pushing $2.50 a drink, MERCY). I think

drink the water quickly as I know I'm not supposed to drink 15

minutes before eating. Quite often in a sit down restaurant it takes

that long for the wait staff to take and return with our order. Most

of the time though I don't order a drink and try to drink before I

even leave for the restaurant. Not ordering a drink seems to really

confuse a lot of wait staff. I usually get, " Nothing? Nothing to

drink? " . That's right buddy, nothing.

Ordering food can be tough. I usually go straight for a breast of

chicken. Often these come with a cheese on them or Codon Bleu type or

something. That's not so terrible for an occasional dinner. I always

get sauces off to the side if at all. I always have fries/chips

turned into steamed broccoli (or some other veggie if I must).

Usually ordering something like this, a full meal type of thing,

results in having a good half of it left over to take home for lunch

at work the next day.

If I'm not as hungry or, I should say, use my new brain and realize I

can only eat half a " normal " meal then I order something different.

I've tried going with soups but often they're not very filling/solid.

My surgeon has cautioned us against soups that have a lot of broth

and little filling substance to them because we might tend to stay or

get hungry sooner and eat again. Chili is great. It's inexpensive,

has a great taste (to me), has some fiber from the beans if there are

some and has pretty good protein. Sure a ground beef chili has fat

but, again, don't eat it every day. When my kids and I were at the

Hard Rock in Baltimore I ordered the chili and even asked if they

could put a grilled chicken breast in it for extra protein. It cost

me $3 but I think was worth it. I was very full for the rest of the

evening and had ample protein.

When my kids and I walk to our local deli we'll often just each get a

6-8oz fruit salad. Sometimes my daughter and I will split a half

sandwich (which makes you wonder who can eat a whole one themselves

if we're each eating only a quarter). My kids are very open to

splitting meals so we often get away with eating two meals between

the three of us and still getting variety.

The best advice with restaurants is do not be afraid to order weird

combinations of stuff to get to something healthy. Often if there's

some sort of price conflict with switching items the wait staff will

simply handle it in their head and you usually end up paying less

because they simply forgive the substitution. Also feel free to order

off the menu. My son is a bit of a picky eater at 11 (I still force

him to try new things) but he often orders a grilled cheese when

there isn't one in site. They'll make him one and charge

him " something " made up. It's all good.

Not drinking during and after a meal is a bit of a drag but I'm

pretty used to it. What I really like about going out to eat now is I

eat so much less and so much more slowly and deliberately. My family

and friends are able to actually carry on conversations with me

because I'm in tempo with them now instead of just listening for the

5-10 minutes in the beginning while I inhale my food and then I

yammer on non-stop for the next 20+ while they slowly finish their

meals.

I also suggest integrating exercise into a meal. My kids and I,

tonight, will probably be walking (with a bag of water bottles) down

to Blues on the Mall where we'll listen to some music and then

continue our walk to a restaurant. We'll then walk home after dinner.

I do dearly miss Diet Mt. Dew or at least I THINK I do. I guess I

don't since I've got Aquafina FlavorSplash to dump all my money into

and it hydrates me better. So I drink that. I could never/rarely get

Diet Mt. Dew at a restaurant so I'd have to suffer through Diet Pepsi

or Diet Coke. I don't miss those. I've not drank sugared soda for

decades. It's quite possible that my Dutch thriftiness will prevail

and I will never order or even drink at home another soda again and

don't get me started on the cost of a beer when you're in a

restaurant. Wow!

I looked at the values for some of the " light " juices like Ocean Spray

Light cranberry juice and they are at 10g sugar per serving. Probably

too much unless you had just a sip or diluted it. There is the option

of sugar free Tang. I can't do nutrasweet, but some people can. I also

have seen Minute Maid " light " drinks like limeade, punch and orange

tangerine in the dairy section. Their website says only 2g sugar for 8

oz. They also make a cherry limeade that I would kill for, but they

also have nutrasweet. Wish they'd switch to Splenda.

,

I use the cran-raspberry and cut in by 1/3 with ice

water. It is very good and the amount of sugar doesnt

affect me to bad. I have experimented with the sugar

and 90% of the time I kick myself. I do not drink any

soda, diet or regular, and juices are to darn sweet.

The crystal light, tends to push me over the top some

with the artificial sweetners. I do like the rapsberry

iced tea and cut it in 1/2 with regular iced tea

(unsweetened). My rny was 1 yr ago.

I'm pre-op and I've spent tons of time lurking and making lists to

prepare myself for this lifestyle change. However, I haven't really

thought about the implications of going to a restaurant. My friends

and I have a weekly routine of food and a movie on Saturdays. I just

figured I would order food that was on the " allowed " list, would eat

until I got full, and take the rest home. I typically eat chicken or

veggies when we are out anyway. I love mexican food which may require

a little thought. I could probably get chicken or shrimp fajitas with

refried beans and be OK.

Am I missing something and over-simplifying the situation?? I was on a

very strict Atkins diet for several months so perhaps I just got used

to being able to only eat certain foods and ignoring the rest.

Relax ,

I can almost eat anything I did before surgery only

1/4 of amount. Red meat is a challenge, pork, chicken,

seafood, it all goes down well. The more tender it is

the better it goes down. Im a gourmet chef and I

create so many different things with veggies, meat and

seafood which are low cal and high protein. Throw out

the boxed-frozen food and enjoy summers fresh veggies

and fruits. Soup is another one of my favorites with

high protein beans, chicken, pork and some cheeses.

Butternut soup with pine nuts is a favorite. You will

be fine and do a great job. When is your surgery and

who is the surgeon?

I think we should definitely invite Chele to any future gatherings! Not that

we want you there just so you can cook us lunch or anything...........

I, like my fellow Mike in California, love Crystal Lite. Lemonade is

my standby favorite because when it's very cold it just feels great

and clean. Some of the orange/red flavors make an awful mess, seem

difficult to mix and can stain something feirce.

Recently I've come across Raspberry Lemonade. Oh heaven! I also tried

out some Fruit Punch flavor. This is now my new favorite. It's almost

too sweet tasting. It tastes nearly identical to the kool-aid mom

used to make back in the 70s.

I've never been a big fruit juice drinker but I do like them. I'd be

interested in a cranberry flavored crystal lite if anyone ever runs

across it.

You sound like you're thinking right to me. Always check with your

nutritionist/doctor though.

I will go to Greek places sometimes and get a Gyro or to a deli and

get a sandwich. They're a lot like getting a fajita. You just have to

try to do your best with a wrap/bread/carb. Try to get whole wheat if

you can. If not then just get one and maybe eat only half of it (eat

your protein first basically). I've eaten bun less hamburgers

sometime because I knew I wouldn't be able to finish a hamburger with

a bun.

Mexican food can be great with the meats and cheeses and fiber from

the beans. The chips are pretty bad though. I will snitch some in

moderation I confess. Salsa is a great low calorie topping. The

chicken or shrimp fajitas sound great. There's no law that says you

can't just put the fajita fixings on a plate and eat them with a fork

instead of wrapping them in a tortila.

Another thing I'll do sometimes is ask if the sides I get with a meal

can't be substituted with additional protein items like an extra bit

of chicken or 2-3 more shrimp or something.

I also try to check a place's menu out online and plan my attack/meal

before I go in.

Nope. However, I had an apple today and let's just say if you need an instant

enema, the apple will do it. As the saying goes, " An apple a day will keep the

doctor away. "

I drink " Minute Maid LIGHT " ... It is 1/2 the sugar of regular OJ and

only 50 calories per cup. Sometimes I mix it with my vanilla or

strawberry protein powder if I'm needing a little change. It's

really pretty good!
