Guest guest Posted October 17, 2004 Report Posted October 17, 2004 --- Sorry forgot to sign off - and one last thing, since starting the scd cannot get little one to go to sleep. He just can't seem to switch off. He used to go at 8pm now he is hyper, crying at times to after 11. Anyone shed light on why this is happening? Sorry for all the questions. Guest guest Posted October 18, 2004 Report Posted October 18, 2004 We really need to know how you started SCD and what he is eating now to give you good suggestions. I did notice that you mention raisins. They are dried fruits and we don't suggest introducing dried fruits until all digestive problems have cleared up. They are difficult to digest. Can you tell us how you started SCD (intro or not) and what you are feeding him now? Jody mom to -5 and -8 SCD 20 months Quote
Guest guest Posted October 18, 2004 Report Posted October 18, 2004 Welcome Aileen, Definately let us know exactly what he is eating. Sometimes phenol problems become more obvious after starting SCD and some of his behavior could be contributed to that if he's eating alot of phenols (raisins are very high in salicylates.) And we can all give some tips of good intro foods and treats that lots of our kids liked in the beginning. At week 5, he could definately still be going through die off. All of the behavior you described could easily be caused by the yeast dying off, especially the cravings for sugar. The beginning is really hard. Keep going and offer lots of SCD legal foods. When the cravings abate some, he may become more receptive of the SCD goodies you're working so hard to make. Good luck! Chrystee Sam, 5, NT, salicylate sensitive SCD 8 months Quote
Guest guest Posted October 18, 2004 Report Posted October 18, 2004 Hi Jody and Chrystee Thanks for the replies. I did the intro but Cian only accepted egg. On day 2-3 he was listless with no energy to get up , wretching when he drank water and very pale and sickly. He was clingly and unusually huggy and calm.Slept alot. I thought the eggs had sickened him as he would only eat them nearly raw. On day 3 he started wetting bed and not going to sleep till very late. For the next couple of weeks his diet consisted of organic chicken and burgers, (turkey he refused) waffles, allowed dry cured bacon, egg, allowed biscuit from BTVC and any veg i could sneak into a quiche made from almond flour. onions, garlic, peppers, carrots, greens, etc. He refused point blank to drink soup, coloured juices - Cian has an absolute abhorance to fruit - come anywhere near him with any fruit and he physically wretchs!! Has anyone else experienced this and has any idea why and how to address it. I did not offer fruit on the first few weeks anyway. Eventually got him to take spoon fuls of chicken broth Lately I have got him to take some stew but literally spooned into him. He did not get any grape jelly, raisens or honey until last week- week 5 as once I give Cian anything sweet that is all he wants. That is exactly what happened. Cian craves for sugar all day. We have to lock the cupboards, the kitchen and can't take him anywhere. He has craved sugar since he went on the gluten/casien free diet at 31/2 and also searches and seeks for ordinary food. I sometimes wonder have I created this obsession. Members of my family think he is hunger and he is not getting enough but this is not the case. His daily menu roughly is allowed waffles with bacon, chicken/burger/salmon and veg quiche/pizza/dinner allowed bread, muffins, biscuits all from SCD recipes Chicken pancakes grape jelly which he is now eating but I think it is sending him wild and he wants to eat the whole tub at once. Because he is so desperate I introduce the raisens but again used as an incentive to drink the soup. I also use the jelly as an incentive. I can drop the raisens but I don't know what else to give him when he is climbing the cupboards. This goes on CONSTANTLY. last week I introduced honey but again he wants to eat the bottle. Ingredients I am using are almond flour, eggs, organic unsalted butter, lemon juice, tomato (which I have a question mark over - not sure if he can handle tomato) garlic, mixed herbs, organic, basil, sea salt, cocunut unsweetened organic, expensive! pears, cardamon, olive oil, and allowed meat/ veg honey ( I am very restrictive on the honey) gelatine -thats about it. So do I start again? What would you question? and how do I combat this sweet thing - 31/2 years is just too long??? He is taking fish oil and probiotic also Thank you so much for your help. I really would love to know if I am helping or hindering him. Aileen Quote
Guest guest Posted October 18, 2004 Report Posted October 18, 2004 It seems to me that he is not getting enough carbs. Can you try using fitday.com to determine the number of carbs he's getting in a day? I think you need to get some fruit into him without him knowing that there is any fruit in the item. Things like the cashew butter muffins, the peanut butter squash brownies, avocado meatloaf, etc. He needs the carbs for energy. Post what you figure out using fitday.com so we can help you more. Guest guest Posted October 18, 2004 Report Posted October 18, 2004 Patti Cian is on a probiotic - he was on customs but a doctor who totally support SCD recommended a stronger one that has more stains in it. It is specifically designed for children in mind particular ASD Jody did the fitday.com I am not familiar with this so maybe you could advise Cals for today 2377 fat145 carb122 Protein 142. I ommitted that Cian gets avocado . Is there more carbs in cashew butter and peanut butter squash than almond flour? Cian has loads of energy - it was only in the first week he was lethargic. Tonight he has way too much!! Should I start again? as I don't know what he is reacting too yeast or food items. Also I worry about the amount of eggs in baking etc. It is unclear whether eggs effect Cian - I would have to remove for a couple of weeks but what then would I cook with. Are there egg free recipes or would I resort to meat and veg which again would limit the carbs. Thanks for helping me with this. Guest guest Posted October 18, 2004 Report Posted October 18, 2004 Patti if Bifidus = Bifidobacterium then there is 4 such strains in there . I have just posted the web site as I can hardly read this small box . www.bio-kult.com There are14 different strains in there and yes I was trying to follow the doctor's advice. Depending on what you or jody come back with I would like to share the information with the doctor as if it isn't helping Cian then there is no point in giving it and I have Customs in the freezer. For the record how much should I start giving to him if this Bio-kult is a no no. I have actually questioned this Bio-Kult as Cian would devour the box if I let him. It has a sweetish taste and the doctor put it down to that. Thanks for the helpi really want to help Cian through this and I appreciate everyones support on this site. Best Aileen > Aileen, > First and foremost, I need to ask you if the probiotic you're using has bifidus in it? If so, you need to know that quite a few SCD kids on this list have ended up not doing very well at all due to bifidus. I'm aware that some of the doctors are recommending other strains, but Elaine continues to stress " acidophilus only " .... but especially " no bifidus " . I think it's interesting that when she was actively participating on our list, she kept warning against the bifidus over and over...... and yet some of the parents are trying to follow their doctor's advice at the same time they're trying to stay SCD legal....... so there were some that used it anyway. Then, sure enough, we saw one kid after another doing poorly on SCD...... that improved dramatically after removing the bifidus strain. There are many other new probiotic strains out there...... and Elaine admits that she doesn't know much about them and doesn't have the time to research them.... but she did pass along quite a bit of information on why we should avoid bifidus (which I can find for you and forward, if you want). She recommends acidophilus only (in supplements), because she feels this is the safest...... and has produced the best result with those on SCD over the years. > > So......once I see what strains you're using, maybe we can make further recommendations on the food issues..... but if bifidus is in the mix, you may not make much progress no matter what changes you make, food-wise. > > Patti, mom to Katera, SCD 17 months > Re: Yeast /sugar advice and reassurance please > > > Patti Cian is on a probiotic - he was on customs but a doctor who > totally support SCD recommended a stronger one that has more stains > in it. Guest guest Posted October 18, 2004 Report Posted October 18, 2004 Aileen, I went to the bio-kult website and yes, indeed...... there are several strains of bifidus. Definitely could be causing a problem..... but if that weren't reason enough, it is also in a base of MALTODEXTRIN, which is illegal. If you are trying to stay 100% on SCD (which is really the only way you'll have a chance of making it work), you won't be able to give him this product. Do you have the Custom Probiotics ACIDOPHILUS ONLY? Or does that one have other strains, too? If it's only acidophilus, there are instructions for how to introduce it..... SLOWLY.... on the www.pecanbread.com website. I have to go pick Katera up from school now but will forward the things I have saved about bifidus. He is active alright but I'll do the chart again tomorrow and see what i come up with. Guest guest Posted October 18, 2004 Report Posted October 18, 2004 I was talking to friend from college the other day who has NT daughter a couple months older than Bryars and she lamented that her little one drives her crazy because some weeks she loves green beans, the next week she won't touch them, and so on and so on. It gave me some much needed perspective, if you know what I mean. Sometimes I attribute Bryars' behavior to this or that...and forget he is a kid. 2 year old kid at that. Anyway, just keep that in mind. It helps me just deal with the ups and downs of motherhood. Guest guest Posted October 19, 2004 Report Posted October 19, 2004 I think there's even more here. Often the obsessions come from the opioid effect on the brain of the peptides that leak through the gut. It's very common that before dietary treatment these children will self-limit to starches and dairy (macaroni and cheese) because of the drug-like effect they get after eating them. If you are using butter, I'd be concerned that some traces of casein may be getting through. But especially since you said he's been exhibiting the cravings since you started GF/CF, that makes complete sense. He wants the " high " that came with a lot of the sugary foods which were probably wheat-based - in other words, he ate jelly on bread or syrup on waffles, etc., and the gluten gave him an opioid high. The sugar tasted good and the starch it sat on gave him the high. Point is, if he is craving the foods it means he is not getting the high he is seeking - which means YOU ARE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT! (Someone more experienced with SCD might have comments here . . . ?) Also - the grape jelly -- ??? Jelly usually has sugar sugar and more sugar added to it . . . ???? I'm with Jody on the calorie count - if it's so hard to get him to eat, I don't see how he could possibly be consuming over 2000 calories. It also sounds to me (like I posted to you privately - maybe others can concur here) that you are way farther down the " stages " list than you should be at 5 weeks. We are at 6 weeks and still just eating lots of meat with pureed veggies, applesauce, pearsauce, cooked carrots, scrambled eggs with veggies and/or chicken added, chicken and veggie pancakes, lots of soups with different mixes of meats and veggies, and occasional small amounts of peanut butter cake. We just started the Kirkman's acidophilus this week, and at the risk of speaking too soon, Sweet Boy is back. Aileen, you haven't been around to hear my story, but for the rest of you who might be interested, if you remember, was on Diflucan (Rx anti yeast) when we started SCD, and 2 weeks into SCD he was unbelievably sweet, happy, and cooperative. Then, coincidentally, when the course of Diflucan was over, cheated horribly on the diet, and we had a huge resurgence of yeast. We never quite got back to the Sweet Boy I had for those few days, but now having started the acidophilus, I have seen glimpses of him again!!! Yea!! For anyone who's interested, I mixed one capsule with a cup of applesauce and gave each of my 3 children 1/3 cup (so hopefully each child got 1/3 of the capsule or 1 billion cells). I skipped a day and gave it again today. Will work up to one capsule per day, but so far so good!! Alice Mama to , Asperger's, SCD 6+ weeks _____ Aileen, You said: <<Cian craves for sugar all day. I was refering to the legal grape 'jello'. We try and keep one side of the kitchen completely free of foods that could contaminate but we do have an ever ending problem of keeping Cian's older brother from droping crumbs. He is very very good but you know there is always the time when he suddenly realises Pokeman is on and their goes the biscuit with him! Also we visited a 'ball pool' I don't know what you call them in American but it is an indoor soft playarea. Anyway I had an appointment and grandma was left keeping an eye. While I was away 4 birthday parties took place and Grandma had the most aweful time as food was being served constantly (I didn't realize they did food and so near the play area. Well watching Cian for her would have been a complete nightmare and I have no doubt he would have picked up or grabbed at something so I have printed out all of your emails and with Elaines book in hand going to start again! Guest guest Posted October 26, 2004 Report Posted October 26, 2004 Aileen, I'm so sorry to hear that you've been in the hospital. How much longer until the baby is due? At this point, I really wouldn't worry about Cian's diet too much. You have other things to concentrate on. If you can manage to keep him eating just cooked foods, including the nuts, then that's what I'd do. With others cooking for you, it's pretty hard to do things the way you'd like. But he won't get worse by feeding him all legal foods for now. Once the new baby comes and you are feeling better, you can start with the intro again and go slower. No problem. We've had lots of parents who've switched to all legal foods and then later gone back to do the intro. Starting with the intro is ideal. But of course, not feeling like a sumo wrestler would be ideal as well...lol. Don't stress out. Just get your husband and helpers to feed him cooked legal foods. And I'd LOVE to come to Ireland for an SCD conference (or for any reason for that matter). Jody mom to -5 and -8 SCD 21 months Quote
Guest guest Posted October 27, 2004 Report Posted October 27, 2004 --- Jody I think you're right. I'm still trying to get it perfect and it makes it so difficult when other people are carrying out the instructions! I have 2/3 weeks to go but I may be taking in sooner. I just have to let go and trust something I struggle with when you are trying to all you can for the little man. Thanks for the practical advice Best Aileen In pecanbread , " Jody G. Guest guest Posted October 27, 2004 Report Posted October 27, 2004 Aileen – can you post a copy of the stages list from pecanbread, com on the refrigerator for those helping you? Circle stages 1 and 2 and cross out the rest. It’s pretty easy to check the list and do just stage 1 or 2 foods. Just a thought. Alice Mama to , ASD, SCD 7 ½ weeks --- Jody I think you're right.
