Guest guest
Hi , I've been there, and wasted my money on the fish oil pills. The Omega 3 eggs are a great way to get it, but my natural medicine docs say the best thing is Flax oil. They said it's better than the fish oil. I have it in three varieties, all Spectrum brand: oil, mayonnaise, and spread (butter-like, well that's the intent anyway). And I still get the eggs - I swear by them, but they aren't easy to find all the time. You can find the oil in a health food store, in the refrigerator section. Hope this helps! :)Pam B. Guest guest
Thanks Pam! Those are some great links. I haven't seen the Omega 3 eggs here, not a big egg eater anyway. I like the idea of the flax oil better, but I thought it wasn't as effective as the fish oil. I got this impression from this little snippet of article from http://www.mercola.com/2002/mar/20/omega3_oils.htm " The main component of flaxseed and walnut oils is alpha-linolenic acid while the predominant fatty acids found in fatty fish and fish oils are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The most beneficial and active of these fatty acids are EPA and DHA. Alpha-linolenic acid can be converted to EPA and DHA in the body, but the conversion is quite inefficient especially in older people. [1, 2] " I'm hoping you know more about it than I do, though. You've got better access to naturopaths than I do here! I saw that one of the links says that flaxseed has more omega-3's than fish oil...that I can believe. It seems like you have to take an awful _lot_ of fish oil capsules to get enough of the omega-3's! Really good info about the flax oil lowering the cholesterol and triglycerides, too. I might have to get my hubby to start taking it. Thanks for the refs! Now I'm on information overload! Guest guest
that's an interesting article too. I'm not sure why he thinks flax oil is not as good for you as fish oil, and my docs think the other way around. He does say that all fish has mercury contamination and to be careful of that... My docs did say to try to eat fish twice a week as well as taking the flax oil (1 tsp a day). I worry about the mercury contamination though. And I've always thought of fish as a luxury food, what you eat on vacation, restaurants, special occasions - I'm having a hard time thinking of it as a food staple for some reason. What I think is interesting in your article is his talk about Omega 6 and avoiding all those canola, soy, corn, safflower, etc. I've been reading that in other places as well. Canola oil sounds really evil: http://www.ithyroid.com/canola_oil.htm On the other hand, coconut oil sounds wonderful: http://www.mercola.com/2001/jul/28/coconut_health.htm I've also read about it here: http://www.ithyroid.com/coconut_oil.htm and of course olive oil is good for you. I've recently bought the light kind of olive oil that can be used in baking. My grandmother has been using it and her cookies taste just as good as they ever did. and yes, I'm trying to get my husband on board about the flax oil for his cholesterol too... I think I'm just going to add the flax oil to his zesty italian salad dressing and he will never know the difference! LOL It's really hard sorting all of this stuff out and what we thought was healthy turns out not so good etc. The docs at Bastyr pooh-poohed the food pyramid this week. They said that the food pyramid is sponsored by the grain and dairy organizations. What we really need to do is focus on protein, fruits and veggies. So much to learn and un-learn... LOL I think just adding it as a matter of course to something one already eats is a good idea. I routinely add powdered milk to a lot of recipes just for the added calcium. Adding the flax oil to a salad dressing is a good idea. Do you use bottled or homemade? Sneaking things in to other foods is a good way to get someone to eat veggies and such also. I had a book from another library that had a great hint about cauliflower (which I dislike, if only because I don't like the texture of the cooked veggie). Puree it and add it to mashed potatos. I'm going to give it a try one of these days and see if I like it that way. > It's really hard sorting all of this stuff out and what we thought was > healthy turns out not so good etc. The docs at Bastyr pooh-poohed the food > pyramid this week. I've more or less given up on the food pyramid, it changes everytime you turn around. I prefer to learn what makes my body feel good and go from there, rather then listen to what the government has decided is good for me. The problem with the food pyramid is it is one size fits all. I've heard accusations of it being racist since it promotes dairy as practically the only source of calcium and many ethinic groups are lactose intolerant. Guess which product group is a major sponsor of the food pyramid :-) C

Guest guest
Again, this is really interesting. As an 'A' on my blood type diet, I can eat canola oil, but coconut oil is a big no-no. I still really think all these things depend on a persons individual chemistry. I listened to all that protein stuff for years and tried to eat more protein. As an 'A', however, I'm supposed to eat a diet high in complex carbohydrates rather that high in protein. There are so many theories out there-who do you believe? Guest guest
we use both bottled and homemade salad dressing, bottled when tired and lazy. With bottled I usually drizzle the flax oil on my salad as well as the salad dressing. I sometimes stir flax oil into rice before serving. I've been thinking of adding some to my protein smoothies, but can't decide if that would ruin it or not. I've been sneaking other healthy stuff into foods too sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't - I tried putting parsnips in my mashed potatoes once and it ruined them. They are very flavorful and over-powered the potatoes. I've put sweet potatoes and squash in beef stew. Spinach and/or zucchini in tomato sauce, Spinach and carrots and cheese in meatloaf, etc. My husband is on to me though and now he asks what's in everything. I need to find a way to put beans and lentil into stuff without him realizing it... He refuses to even try beans or lentils. Guest guest
I think you have to listen to your body, and that balance is important - everything in moderation. And I think that people's nutritional needs change over various periods in their life, so what works for you now may not work in 20 years. If you are feeling wonderful doing the type A diet, then I say stick to it as long as you feel good. What you could do is experiment by adding in one of the foods that you love and haven't had for awhile and see how your body reacts to it. Once a food is out of your system and you add it back in, you are supposed to know pretty quickly if your body doesn't agree with it. I tried the ER4YT - I'm type A too, but one, it was too hard, I don't like a lot of those foods - I'm a meat and potatoes girl - and two, I didn't feel like there was enough balanced nutrition there, and I never really felt like it was doing me any good - I didn't notice a change at all. Also, my husband is type O and it was just too tempting watching him eat steak while I tried to swallow tofu. I asked the docs at Bastyr about it and they said that if you were going to follow any of those diets the type O diet seemed to have the best nutrition. The biggest change I'm trying to make at our house is making more foods myself, rather than using boxed mixes or prepared or processed foods. The fresher the better and the closer it is to its natural state the better. Whole unbleached flour rather than white, homemade rather than box mix, and I'm trying to get more variety in there. And I'm making sure I have protein in every meal and snack. It certainly isn't easy and it does cost more, but so far so good, I'm feeling better than I have in 2 years.
Guest guest
I agree with you. And about adding the " forbidden " foods back in, it's almost impossible to go completely without wheat unless you're at home all the time. But when I get a sandwich out, which has wheat, of course, I get gas now. That's one way I know that I shouldn't eat wheat! My sister is starting the diet and she's a type O, which are the carnivores. She's been a vegetarian for 10 years and now is going to try eating meat again. Her husband is a big animal rights advocate, and that's why they don't eat meat. It's going to be interesting around the Reaves household..... Should be quite entertaining hehehehe. One thing she may want to do is to see about trying to buy meat from a local source, preferable someone who raises their stuff free range. One way to get back into eating meat without supporting the big factory farms and gigantic cattle feed lots. C
