begin looking for it in the stores.

Yup, as long as it's ground up! Then you get the benefit of tons of

fiber, too. The whole seeds look like tiny black/dark brown pumpkin

seed and are undigestible. Ground up, it looks like a very course flour

or grain. When ground, it releases all the good oils for you to use!

> natural and inexpensive as possible. There is flax seed in Uncle

> Sam's cereal.

Probably not as much as you really need tho. 1 tablespoon of the oil has

the same EFAs as 7.5 tablespoons of flaxseed meal. And I really wouldn't

recommend over 1/4 cup a day of the meal just for, uhm, digestive reasons.

My newest way of eating flax is to take about 3oz of extra firm tofu and

mash it with a fork, add some splenda and cinnamon, and microwave for 50

seconds. Remove, add 1 Tablespoon of flaxseed meal, nuke for another 20

seconds. The texture is a little weird, but it's kind of like a very

lumpy oatmeal to me. Pair up with a small piece of fruit and you're good

to go!

Other way I've eaten it is to take 1/4c and just add nearly-boiling water

and a bunch of sugar-free maple syrup to cream-of-wheat consistency.

Or to add flaxseed meal to egg whites and flavorings, bake lightly, to

make a sort of dense muffin-thing.

BTW, you can buy ground flaxseed, usually in the 'health food' section of

your grocery store, a bulk section, or a co-op. I usually get Bob's

Redmill brand. As soon as you get it home, dump the contents into a

tupperware container and store it in the freezer to keep fresh, as the

good oils, the ones we're after, can go rancid fairly easily.

Oh, and ONE OTHER WAY! (hah, I love my flax!) is to get the omega-3 rich

eggs. They're a little more pricy, but the important thing is to EAT THE

YOLK on these: that's where the good stuff is. If you just eat the

whites, yer wasting money! So maybe use one whole egg of the omega-3

stuff and then get the rest of your egg whites from egg beaters or cheaper

eggs.

> How's that for going against the old 'I'm not going to try it 'cause

> it is good for you'?

Heh, funny thing is, I was thinking about this old habit this morning as I

was eating the above-mentioned crazy-health-nut mush and thinking about

how far I've come from the bowls of frootloops in college. :P My

boyfriend, of course, won't touch ANY of my food that has the word

" organic " on the packaging. Hey, more for me! But often I can sneak good

healthy stuff into meals that I make and he won't even notice, as long as

I don't tell him!

Hey all (again)

I havent been using flax seed oil. Could that be another possible reason for

the plateau in weight loss? Just a thought.

Either way, I am going to go and buy some tomorrow. How much should I take?

Thanks!

<PRE>I also have a flax seed question....I could not find the oil at the store,

but found some oil in capsule form (1000 mg each). Ingredients list only

cold pressed, unrefined flax seed oil (and then a few ingredients for the

capsules, like gelatin). Are these okay or is the oil form you add to food a

lot better?

did you look in the refrigerator section. Flax seed oil has to be kept

cold so that is where you would find it.

Does anyone use flax seeds instead of the oil? GNC was out of oil,

so I bought a big packet of seeds...directions say to sprinkle on

salads or cereal, I was just wondering what kind of taste I should

expect.

I've used ground flax seeds and to me the taste was similar to wheat germ

with a little nutty taste also.

I am taking 4 doses a day. I find if I take it straight, I have to

go potty right away, so I tend to mix it with stuff i.e. shakes,

etc. I don't seem to be having trouble with my hair though. All I

know is it makes me FEEL GREAT! :) And it helps with that winter dry

skin itch.

I was wondering if the straight oil is better than the capsules? I

haven't been able to find just the oil.

dang it, dang it, dang it...I just can't find where I read something

about how the capsules are just not as good as the oil...

let me keep looking. I'll get back to you on this!

Well, Betty, I just can't find it. It said something like you had to

take a bunch of the pills to equal what you get from the liquid/oil.

Maybe someone can help me out here?

I found my oil in the health food market in this little refigerated

section. Perhaps it's there? Ask the manager. You can buy it on

line too.

I use this brand:

http://barleans.com/index.html

This site has a Store Locator to help find where someone might have

their product nearby.

I get their Barlean's Organic Lignan Flaxseed Oil

--- THe guy at the health food store said the capsules are basically

the same, but you have to take 15 pills to equal 1 tbsp. Much easier

just to buy it in the bottle.

With the liquid flax seed can you just drink it on it's own? Also

do you take 1tbl for ever 45lbs each time you take it i.e. 3 tbls 3

times a day or do you take 1 tbls per 45lbs throughout the day?

I just recently starting using it myself and havenb't seen anything

yet it's been about a week to a week and a half since I started.

I'm hoping it will happen soon though. I would recommend the liquid

form though.

Hi Tiffiny!

I've read where you have to take a bunch of the capsules to equal one

Tablespoon of bottled Flax Oil. Be sure to get the refrigerated Flax

Oil. I like Barlean's. http://barleans.com/

Check out the Flax Oil info in the Files folder for this group.

Also, I don't think it will olive oil will interfere with the flax

oil, but I'm not an expert :).

P.S.

In recent discussions, the consensus was to take 1 Tablespoon a day.

I've seen where people take 1 Tbsp per 45# of body weight.

if the oil went rancid (not kept in the fridge), you would taste it.

If you used high lignan oil, stir it up.

Better use pure oil and add freshly ground flaxseed as per Dr Budwig's

diet book.

A question for anyone who might have the answer. In reading Dr.

Burranscano's guideline, he lists some required vitamin and herbal

additions to treatment. Under essential fatty acids, he specifically

states " Do NOT use flax seed oil. " Does anyone know why?

Thanks, Libby

1 tbsp a day is enough for most people to see all of the benefits. I've done as

much as 3 tbsp a day and that's just expensive and gross. Unless you're doing

some kind of ultra low-carb cutting phase, that much oil is probably overkill.

If you do 1 tbsp you can take it all at once. If you're taking multiple

tablespoons you definitely want to spread them out for, um, digestive purposes.

:-/

flax seed oil

OK - I've read the article in the files re flax seed and now am really

confused on how much I should be taking. One article said 1 tablespoon for

every 45 lbs of body weight but everything else I read said 1 tbl a day. Next

questions-spread out over the day or all at once?
