Guest guest
OK, I just got off the phone with the nurse. She explained to me that it is an active helmet, but that some people consider helmets in general to be passive and that by active they mean surgery, or some other form of invasive type procedure. Also, I asked her about the foam inserts and she said that was fine. She did ask who my ortho was and she said that if I'd told her anyone but Greg that she might be worried, but that he is very good. She said did say that I could come in to see Dr. Gordon if I wanted to though. I told her that I think I'm going to see how this go-round with the fitting goes and take it from there. I think I just need to give it more time. Thanks again for all the support, it really has made this whole process easier. Thanks, Kirsten > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Currently Laurel is out of her Hanger helmet, she has > > been > > > > VERY > > > > > > > sick > > > > > > > > with an ear infection and was in and out of her helmet > > over > > > > the > > > > > > > > weekend. Guest guest
Hello. I'm glad that the band seems to be fitting her better now. The Orthotist saying that she will grow into it may just be referring to the fact that in the beginning (and often after some foam is remove during adjustments) they do have to grow into the band a bit. This allows for the flatter areas to pop out as their head grows. It sounds as if there are holding spots on her band though if her " buldging " areas are coming in contact with it. Sorry about the insensitive comment you got. I think it's pretty rude for someone to say something about it when they really aren't that educated about it. Keep us updated. Guest guest
Kirsten, It's never good to add anything to the inside of the band. The bands are made from casts or scans of the baby's head. Add something to the inside of the band and your basically changing the shape of the band. Keep your eye on this. > > > > > > > > > > Currently Laurel is out of her Hanger helmet, she has been > VERY > > > > sick > > > > > with an ear infection and was in and out of her helmet over > the > > > > > weekend. Guest guest
Carol, You're correct. Adding foam is a no, no and usually indicates something is wrong w/the fit. > > > > > > > > > > > > Currently Laurel is out of her Hanger helmet, she has been > > VERY > > > > > sick > > > > > > with an ear infection and was in and out of her helmet over > > the > > > > > > weekend.
Guest guest
Kirsten, There's a huge difference between passive, active and surgery. Passive helmets rely totally on growth. The helmet sits on the baby's head and eventually that baby's head grows into the shape of the helmet, round. An active band is just that active. It redirects the growth of the head through gentle pressure not felt by the baby. How would surgery be active? That totally confuses me. I don't understand how she can tell you it's ok to add foam to the helmet. By adding foam to the helmet he just changed the shape of the helmet. Why bother casting/scanning if you're just going to change the shape of the helmet by adding foam to it? Please be on your toes. We've had more than one baby here have foam added to their band b/c the band was ill fitting. Their bands ended up making their plagio worse. -- In Plagiocephaly , " shields31 " <shields31@...> wrote: > > OK, I just got off the phone with the nurse. Guest guest
My ortho told me that he would schedule Laurel for monthly adjustments, but anytime I felt like she needed to be looked at to call. He also told me if they try to do like they did the last time and give me an appointment for a week out to tell them he said to try harder. He said, if she needs something, he wants to see her either that day or the day after. > > > > > > > > > > Currently Laurel is out of her Hanger helmet, she has been > VERY > > > sick > > > > > with an ear infection and was in and out of her helmet over > the > > > > > weekend. Guest guest
I will certainly keep careful watch over it. But I compared Laurel's head now to one from the day she was fitted and there is actually some improvement. After talking with the plastic surgery nurse, I do feel much better about it. Cincinnati Children's is one of the premiere children's plastic surgery units in the country, if they say it's OK then I'm OK with it. If there is one thing I have found out, it's that almost none of these places have the same course of treatment using the different helmets. That being said, I will definitely keep an eye on her. Greg (the ortho) told me that I could come back in any time to get adjustments and the PS nurse said that if I want to see Dr. Gordon, all I have to do is call and they'll get me in. Thanks for all the insight and help, it's much appreciated.
Guest guest
Laurel, Have you asked your ortho how many babies he's treated w/a band? Some red flags are popping up for me. Too long in between adjustments and adding foam to her helmet. I'm not trying to freak you out, but we've had way too many baby's plagio get worse due to ill fitting bands and inexperienced orthos. Keep us posted. > > > > > > > > > > > > Currently Laurel is out of her Hanger helmet, she has been > > VERY > > > > sick > > > > > > with an ear infection and was in and out of her helmet > over > > the > > > > > > weekend. Guest guest
I haven't asked specifically how many babies, but I know that as of now he's seeing at least 5 because that's how many were in for adjustments the same day we were. And the plastics nurse told me he's the best in the area, so I'm not sure what else I can do. I may go ahead and try to get in to see Dr. Gordon (plastic surgeon) earlier than May, when we are scheduled now. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Currently Laurel is out of her Hanger helmet, she has been > > > VERY > > > > > sick > > > > > > > with an ear infection and was in and out of her helmet > > over > > > the > > > > > > > weekend.
