Hello. My daughter also wore a Hanger Band. She got great

correction. It definitely sounds like your Daughter's band needs to

be adjusted. It shouldn't be making a mark on her cheek like that.

Sometimes just a simple adjustment will fix things.

To answer your question about active vs. Passive bands... the Hanger

Band is made to be an active band. This means it has certain holding

points (usually the more prominent/buldging areas on the baby's head)

and there is space in the band for the flat spot(s) to " pop out " . An

active band basically re-directs the growth of the head. In the

beginning (first 2 weeks or so) the band may have a little more give

and seem a little looser as their head grows a little to make the fit

a little better. A passive band is made to be the " final " shape of

the baby's head. There aren't as many adjustments needed as the

passive bands don't redirect the growth of the head. They simply rely

on the baby's head growing into the shape of the band. There have

been Orthotists who have made an active band into a passive one by

taking out foam... but this should not be done. Do you think that

your Ortho has made the band passive?

How often is she going in for adjustments? How much experience does

your ortho have? You're doing the right thing by treating her plagio.

I am so sorry to hear that you are getting red marks and

indentations. How long has your daughter been in the band? Please

don't doubt your decisions to treat her plagio. I'm sure you did it

on the assumption that you would get a great fitting band and you

only want what is best for your daughter. I remember when my twins

were born they were premie and they didn't know how to nurse but i

kept trying. I felt so bad for making them work so hard for their

food when they had already been through so much. They eventually

got the hang of it and I'm glad I did it because I think is was good

for their health in the long run. Hopefully your ortho can make an

adjustment and fix the problem right away. Please keep us posted.

Hi ,

Laurel is 7 months old now. Thanks for the clarification about the

active/passive thing. She's only been in the helmet for about 2.5

weeks now, so I'm still learning. She was supposed to go in for an

adjustment at 3 weeks and then monthly after that.

I didn't really have any choice in the ortho department. He's the

only one that does the cranial banding for infants. He seems very

knowledgeable though, and I've been pleased with the adjustments.

It's just so odd that Laurel would have the helmet on for almost a

week and a half and then all of the sudden, it seems too tight on

one cheek. She had been sick, so I wonder if there was some

swelling or water retention involved?

We go in this afternoon, so I'll post an update later...

Hi Kirsten,

How'd your appointment go? You should ask your ortho if you can come

in every 2 weeks for an adjustment. That's how often a baby Laurel's

age should get adjustments. My dd was almost 11.5 months old when she

got her band. It was adjusted every 2 weeks.

Maybe Laurel just had a growth spurt!

How'd your appointment go? You should ask your ortho if you can come

Finally got a chance to get online again... Laurel's appointment

was fine. He got that side of the band to not be so tight on her

cheek. The first adjustment made it too loose, but then he got it

right, I think.

It's an interesting point you bring up about an active band being

made into a passive band. I remember now why I thought it was a

passive band because when he was explaining the band to us, he said

it was made so Laurel's head would grow into it. I seriously hope

that I'm not going through all of this for nothing.

We have an appointment in another month to see her plastic surgeon

again. Maybe I will move that appointment up, and have him check

the helmet. He told me at the original appointment if I was unhappy

with the helmet and they couldn't get the adjustments right that he

would force them to make me a new one. I think I will give him a

call tomorrow and see if I can get an appointment with him.

That being said, her main bulging point is on her right side on her

forehead , and the helmet is definitely touching her there because

she's getting some dry skin there, almost like a callous. It seems

like it is fitting her better (she's been in it 2.5 weeks now) and

the places that are supposed to pop do have more room where they are.

And on another note...we got our first insensitive helmet comment

tonight! At, of all places, a funeral visitation for a friend.

This lady (mid-40s or so) came up to us (a total stranger, mind

you), my husband was holding Laurel...she tapped Laurel on the

helmet and said, " You didn't get enough tummy time, huh?? " First of

all...she has always given herself tummy time, we never had to force

it on her. Second of all...it's called " BACK TO SLEEP " +

Torticollis = Flat Spot lady! I did my best to be civil to the

woman, it was certainly not the place for me to lay someone out. I

tried to calmly explain she has tort, but she just kind of looked at

me condescendingly. I decided at that time it was best to walk away.

Finally got a chance to get online again... Laurel's appointment

was fine. He got that side of the band to not be so tight on her

cheek. The first adjustment made it too loose, but then he got it

right, I think.

It's an interesting point you bring up about an active band being

made into a passive band. I remember now why I thought it was a

passive band because when he was explaining the band to us, he said

it was made so Laurel's head would grow into it. I seriously hope

that I'm not going through all of this for nothing.

We have an appointment in another month to see her plastic surgeon

again. Maybe I will move that appointment up, and have him check

the helmet. He told me at the original appointment if I was unhappy

with the helmet and they couldn't get the adjustments right that he

would force them to make me a new one. I think I will give him a

call tomorrow and see if I can get an appointment with him.

That being said, her main bulging point is on her right side on her

forehead , and the helmet is definitely touching her there because

she's getting some dry skin there, almost like a callous. It seems

like it is fitting her better (she's been in it 2.5 weeks now) and

the places that are supposed to pop do have more room where they are.

And on another note...we got our first insensitive helmet comment

tonight! At, of all places, a funeral visitation for a friend.

This lady (mid-40s or so) came up to us (a total stranger, mind

you), my husband was holding Laurel...she tapped Laurel on the

helmet and said, " You didn't get enough tummy time, huh?? " First of

all...she has always given herself tummy time, we never had to force

it on her. Second of all...it's called " BACK TO SLEEP " +

Torticollis = Flat Spot lady! I did my best to be civil to the

woman, it was certainly not the place for me to lay someone out. I

tried to calmly explain she has tort, but she just kind of looked at

me condescendingly. I decided at that time it was best to walk away.

Anyway, thanks for all of the wonderful advice...it is MUCH

appreciated!

It is good that you have the plastic surgeons support. If you have

concerns I would make an appointment with him too. A month is a

long time in plagio time. I can't believe that woman. How can she

live with her know it all self. Very rude. Don't worry this is not

your fault at all. Even if your child didn't have tort it still

wouldn't be your fault. I think there are usually a number of

riskfactors involved when a child ends up with plagio.

In that spot, no, I think he may have heated the outer plastic shell

some and moved it back in. In some other spots they have added more

foam inside to make adjustments. I will try and remember to take

some pictures tonight...

if she thinks Dr. Gordon (plastic surgeon) should take a look at

it. She's in the clinic, so I have no clue when she'll call back.
