Guest guest
5 shots at one time seems awful excessive to me!!! I'm sure it did to baby as well! has gotten two at one time and that was awful enough (for both of us!). The new vaccine is one that's we've looked into as well - our ped. raves about it. I hesitated because I've read studies that link over protected out kids from bugs can harm the immune system by not allowing the system to rev up and get working. THe link was between increasing allergies in children as we've come to protect them from evey bug we can. I don't have to decide on the new vacc. until 's next visit (about a month away) - please let me know if you find any good objective info about it! --- BRad Comer wrote: > I was at the pediatrician yesterday and wanted to comment on some > things: > > Vaccinations: I actually got mad yesterday over this and cried when > they shot my son! :-( I have 3 teenage sons and at the most, they > were given 2 shots at once.......my baby got 4 shots in the thighs > yesterday and would have gotten a 5th if I had not gotten my husband > to > agree to atleast research this new one before giving it to Dean. Guest guest
Sleeping Habits: The doc wants me to put Dean (9 weeks old tomorrow) ona sleeping habit/pattern. He wants me to bathe him right before hegoes to bed, to put the same music on for him to hear, to pull him offthe breast before he falls asleep, to put him in his bed so he can makehimself fall asleep, and do all this at the same time everynite. Hethinks that if I don't do this, Dean will become spoiled in a few monthsand will keep the family up all nite, atleast thats the way I understoodit. I do NOT believe that a baby at his age should be put on asleeping schedule and I didn't appreciate his attitude. How doeseveryone else feel about what he told me?Rene' I do not feel that a baby has to be put on a schedule OR learn to fall asleep on his own, I do not beleive in sleep training a child. We family bed with our youngest girls, Kelsey 22 months and Emma 8 weeks. We always lay with Kelsey til she falls asleep in her toddler bed or our bed. Sometimes she sleeps in her bed all night, sometimes she crawls in with us for the night. Whatever helps her sleep the best is fine with me. Emma is nursing on demand, although she already sleeps through the night. We have our crib right against aour bed and beween the wall with the side off, and her bassinet inside. I bring her into bed to nurse and often fall asleep with her in my arm....so snuggly for her! This works great for us and we love having the babies close to us! Guest guest
I think if you leave a child to cry itself out to sleep that is spoinling them cause just like a gallon of milk your leaving it there to become spoiled instead of putting it where it belongs, in the fridge!! Babies belong at our breasts and in our arms when they need food or comfort. Well spoken!!!!!! Guest guest
Okay, I've been keping quiet lately but I had to respond to this post. You can always go back in a month , and get the next round, if you choose. At my son's eighteen month visit last week, he had two shots. They wanted to do three, I said no, and we're going back in a month for the third. If you know you don't want more than two at a time, say so. Don't ask if it would be okay, just tell them. The pneumococcal conjugate vaccine is fairly new -- was in the vaccine trials for this vax through Children's Hospital here in Boston -- and it is the third one we're going back for in a month. > Cradle Cap: The doc yesterday actually told me to take some Selsun Blue > shampoo, straight from the bottle, and wipe it on my babys head and > forehead and then wash his hair for his cradle cap. Selsum Blue is often recommended for cradle cap and I have heard it works, which makes sense, since dry skin causes dandruff and probably cradle cap, too. Just be careful not to get it in his eyes. I always found a few drops of baby oil in the evening worked great, then a shampoo in the morning. > > > Sleeping Habits: The doc wants me to put Dean (9 weeks old tomorrow) on > a sleeping habit/pattern. I am sorry that there are docs out there who are so misinformed about infancy and child development. You cannot spoil a baby. I think when he is older you can implement some of these ideas -- they are tried and true and not inherently harmful -- but at nine weeks I would just follow Dean's cues and feed him whenever he wants and let him sleep whenever. People have different views on sleep and children. My children do not sleep with me, they sleep all night in their own beds. They each sleep for about 11 hours, straight, every night and this works for us. I did try to lead them towards this behavior by doing some of what your doc suggested, but not until they were considerably older, like over six months. And even then, I followed their cures -- if they weren't tired for some reason, I didn't push it -- I let them tell me when they were tired and ready for bed. I didn't let them cry, but I did try to put them in their beds before they were deeply asleep, so they could experience falling asleep in their cribs. Now eighteen month old has lots of stories, a long nursing session, and when he is sleepy and relaxed I put him in his bed. I stay with him for a minute and rub his tummy, and then he rolls over on his side and falls asleep. With a tummy full of breast milk and a sleepy half-smile on his face he looks like the most peaceful and content little angel. If you do not like your docs advice or attitude, I would suggest finding another one. This is only the beginning of your relationship with him. Guest guest
Rene, I have one comment to make! Get a new doctor! I don't vaccinate so can't speak to that. I have always used olive oil and a soft brush over the course of a week or so to remove cradle cap. I don't think 9 weeks is time to put a baby on a sleep schedule, but I prefer to follow children's natural rhythms. Wendi http://www.lactivist.com breastfeeding resources and info Several Things...... I was at the pediatrician yesterday and wanted to comment on some things: Vaccinations: I actually got mad yesterday over this and cried when they shot my son! :-( I have 3 teenage sons and at the most, they were given 2 shots at once.......my baby got 4 shots in the thighs yesterday and would have gotten a 5th if I had not gotten my husband to agree to atleast research this new one before giving it to Dean. I was outraged!!! Doesn't this seem excessive to anyone else but me? Anyone know anything about the new shot called " pneumococcal conjugate " vaccine? Cradle Cap: The doc yesterday actually told me to take some Selsun Blue shampoo, straight from the bottle, and wipe it on my babys head and forehead and then wash his hair for his cradle cap. Or to use another chemical, the fungal stuff for like athletes foot and stuff, on his facial skin for the cradle cap that sometimes gets on their faces. WHAT THE !@#$%^ & * ?!?!?!?! I sat there listening and couldn't believe what I was hearing. Needless to say, I did NOT go buy either of those products for Dean. I did however ask the doctor how he felt about more natural products like the Herbs for Kids " Craddle Cap/Skin Support " oil I have and he basically said he didn't know much about " natural stuff " but it was ok to try as long as it didn't cause any harm. Well, I tried it last nite, and there was still some flaking on the sheets last nite in the babys bed, but I wouldn't expect it to go away over nite and even the doc himself said the selsun blue wouldn't work overnite. Sleeping Habits: The doc wants me to put Dean (9 weeks old tomorrow) on a sleeping habit/pattern. He wants me to bathe him right before he goes to bed, to put the same music on for him to hear, to pull him off the breast before he falls asleep, to put him in his bed so he can make himself fall asleep, and do all this at the same time everynite. He thinks that if I don't do this, Dean will become spoiled in a few months and will keep the family up all nite, atleast thats the way I understood it. I do NOT believe that a baby at his age should be put on a sleeping schedule and I didn't appreciate his attitude. How does everyone else feel about what he told me?
Guest guest
My Ds is 8 months and he still nurses whenever he wants. I don't believe in schedules. I am not on one why should he? Laurie Re: Several Things...... Schedules are nice, but I do agree with everyone else that a 9 week old baby should not be expected to follow a routine. My twins weren't on a routine until they were about 6-7 months old. But I still nurse them when they want to nurse even if it is just for comfort. I never restrict their nursing. Guest guest
My Ds ped said you shouldn't co sleep but you do and that is ok. Gave reasons why shouldn't and if I do what to do to protect ds from injury. She left it at that and said just be careful and enjoy him. She has never brought it up again. Laurie Re: Several Things...... << I love nursing them to sleep and that they depend on me to take care of them. >>I do too! I wonder what that ped would have thought of cosleeping?? LOLI would find a new ped.Give the Gift of Life Breastfeed!http://www.lactivist.com
Guest guest
I would seek alternative measures. There are many ways to handle this w/out chemicals. Babies will be exposed to so many in their life. Why bring on more. My ped said the same thing about both my kids and I used/use it on both. It works great and as long as you use a small amount and rinse well it doesn't hurt them.Give the Gift of Life Breastfeed!http://www.lactivist.com

Guest guest
Regarding the pneumococcal conjugate vaccination-- This is the 'ear infection' vaccine that was announced back in January. A small percentage of ear infections are due to this bacteria, but a large percentage of other upper respiratory, bacterial infections that children catch are from this bacteria. My first pediatrician (whom I spoke with in January) was taking a wait and see attitude at that time. A pediatrician who I heard speak in March at a Mothers of Preschoolers Meeting was recommending it for her patients that were in daycare situations since those children are exposed to more infections in general and would benefit the most from the immunity. My current pediatrician is pushing it, he is a resident. Probably the whole clinic we go to is pushing it. I have declined the vaccine because a baby under 7 months needs a 4 shot series, and my youngest child isn't in a daycare or any other at-risk groups. Should I have to put either of my children into daycare, I would revisit my decision. Our clinic brings in a second nurse for administering shots, so that if you get more than one shot they can happen almost simultaneously. If that second nurse isn't available I have the option to reschedule for vaccinations at another appointment. As for your other questions... others have already commented what I would have to say and far better.
