Guest guest
Hi... while the anemia often doesn't come until kidney functioning is decreased a good bit... I just had to tell you that it's not as rare as some might think! My daughter (2 1/2 yrs old) went from a normal RBC count one month to a well below normal one 2 months later. The only thing that changed in between was she started having blood (and protein of course) in her urine. The longer she bled the lower her counts were. Platelets and WBC were also starting to drop right before treatment started. When she got to 9 (hemoglobin I think?) they said if she got any lower they would have to start thinking about treating the anemia. All the while she was on iron supplements. ANYWAY... after she started steroids... and the inflammation decreased and the blood went from gross to microscopic... her counts went back to normal. Her kidney functioning is 95% right now. (approx) So... if it concerns you- as it did me- and he is still losing blood... then by all means request that they check his CBC. It can't hurt anything. And it's your son. Whether my daughters blood counts dropped because of lack of EPO being produced- or from actual blood loss is irrelevant. What matters is that they dropped... and early in her kidney disease. Please get him checked if it would make you feel better. I also talked with another mom on IgAN.ca that stated that her sons got as low as 7.6 and they were very concerned! Once steroids were started his counts returned to normal. Good luck and I'm interested in hearing what the doctor says. mom to 2.5 yrs old > Hi, With all those protein/ creatinine ratios done, why has my son's > nephrologist never checked his blood count? Doesn't all that blood > passing in the urine lower his count? I'm confused.
