Dear ,

I had my TT on 8/29/02. I only used major pain medication the day of

the surgery (Thursday) and the next morning. I did use regular Tyl.

a few times for the next two days especially at night just in case I

couldn't sleep. After that I didn't used anything. The feeling is

more annoying than painful after the first day or two. The worst part

is trying to find a comfortable position to sleep and trying to eat

that day. I only had an italian ice the day of the surgery. The next

day, I found that drinking Warm tea before I had my food helped me to

swallow easier. I went home on Friday and rested for the rest of the

weekend. On Tuesday I was already driving my car locally. I was able

to turn my head from side to side enough to drive on the side

streets. On Wednesday I got my car inspected and drove my 4 year old

son to school.

On Thursday, one week later, I drove both kids to school and was able

to drive on the highway to take my younger son to his occupational

therapist in the afternoon.

Now that my stiches are out(done on Friday), I still feel a tightness

on the scar. My doctor discribed it as a finger going across my neck.

He said that it may take up to a month for that feeling to go away.

I still bend my neck down to eat(it is more comfortable)but now

swallowing is much easier.

Overall,it took me 5-6 days to feel good enough, not perfect, to

start my daily activities again. My doctor did suggest that I turn my

neck from side to side(not up) every once in a while so that I don't

get that " stiff Look " some people get. Maybe this helped me to drive

so soon. Everyone resumes their everyday activities at their own

pace. With two kids and my husband going back to work on the Tuesday

after my surgery, I had no choice but to get up and go. Who else was

going to do it? Moms aren't allowed to get sick :-)

I hope this long-winded posting of my own personal experience will

help you to not worry so much about your recovery. Even though

everyone is different, I found that this surgery was not as bad as I

FEARED it would be. Everyone has anxiety before their surgery, I know

I did. What your feeling is normal. You will do great! Go in with a

positive attitude.

Good luck on 9/10/02, you will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I really appreciate your words! I understand the 'mom never gets sick'

scenario considering I am a single mom of a very active 6 year old

little girl!!!! I am really glad that my mom and sister are flying out

from N.J. to help me from Wed.(9/11-when I come home) until the

following Tuesday morning. I know after they leave I still have my best

friend who works with me( I have a office at home) and she will help out

too. Our daughters go to the same school both in 1st grade. I even

think my ex-husband will help out with Zoe if I need to rest or if I

have to go through the RAI treatment.

If the papillary is contained only in the nodule I wonder if you still

have to go through RAI? Has anyone ever just had containment in the

nodule and that only part of the thyroid???

My nodule is 7mm( at least at the biopsy time on July 9th). I am

hoping that this was caught really early!!!!

God bless.....

Hi Dee,

Thank you for that advice...I will definitely ask about calcium

supplements after surgery for precautionary measures.

Take care,

HI. That sounds right. You probably won't be in much pain, just discomfort.

Take whatever prescriptions for pain relief they give you, just in case.

Rest, rest, rest!!

I wish you the best and will be thinking of you. Things will be fine.

Yep, me, for one, . And going through the RAI, while certainly

an experience I would rather NOT go through again, DOES have some

major benefits:

- My nuc med doc told me that RAI decreases your chances of recurrance

by a factor of 3

- It means they can track any possibility of recurrance of the cancer

through blood tests

And here's more on the pros of RAI:

My papillary ca was completely encapsulated, but was larger than yours. I

had TT 1/8/02 and RAI 7/2/02. My tumor was 3.9 cm. Under 1 cm sometimes RAI

isn't done. Since yours was smaller, see what your endo says and make your

own decision. It is easier to monitor following TT and RAI though as TG

levels can be used.

Mine was contained only in the nodule and my doctor is sending me for

RAI. My tumor was 2.5 cm. After reading previous postings on this web

site, I feel it is the smart way to follow up my TT. I don't like the

idea but better safe than sorry. Again, good luck tomorrow.

Both of my <1cm foci of pap thyca were on one side of my thyroid, but

my doctor still recommended RAI. It's quite the controversial

decision I have discovered. My first endo was quite vehemently

against it, but the people at the Mayo Clinic who gave me a third

path. opinion recommended it for me. Of course your circumstances

could be different.

Good luck tomorrow. I'll be thinking about you.

,

Both of my <1cm foci of pap thyca were on one side of my thyroid, but

my doctor still recommended RAI. It's quite the controversial

decision I have discovered. My first endo was quite vehemently

against it, but the people at the Mayo Clinic who gave me a third

path. opinion recommended it for me. Of course your circumstances

could be different.

Good luck tomorrow. I'll be thinking about you.
