HI. It is a small world. We live in Metuchen. I'm convinced that everyone

knows someone who knows someone, etc, etc.

The comforting thing is that when I tell someone I have thyroid cancer,

everyone knows someone who has had it " years ago " and is doing fine. I get

tremendous comfort in that, especially because my scan/RAI is coming up this

week and I am getting very nervous about this next step in the process. Every

unknown hurdle that has to be achieved has its own set of anxieties that go

along with it.

Hi n,

I grew up in Upper Montclair until I got married in 1983 and moved

across country. That was 19 years ago and have been divorced for 3

years now. My Mom lives in Little Falls and my sister lives in

Denville. I am really looking forward to seeing them and I am glad that

I will be feeling decent enough to visit with them instead of having a

long recovery. It seems that people posting their experiences of

recovery time with post surgery is a few days of not moving around to

much and resting. Is that about right?

Thanks and God bless,

Yep - for me, at least, it really wasn't too bad. I'd just had an

abdominal hysterectomy 5 weeks earlier, and compared to that, the TT

was a piece of cake. Of course, I was still recouping from the hyst,

which in some ways was good, because I didn't try to overdo it. You

do want to take it easy, but do move around and try not to hold your

neck stiffly in one position. No lifting (your doc will give you

specifics on how much is ok and how long you should keep those

limits on). Listen to your body about how much to do and when to do

it.

You're gonna do fine, and we'll all be cheering you on!

Cheers,

Alisa

I live in Modesto, about ninety miles from everywhere. South of Sacramento,

north of Yosemite, southeast of SF and southwest of San .

I had my surgery done in SF, but all my aftercare is being done here. I

have been seeing my endo for diabetes and lipid care since 1992 and now she

is handling this and my hypopara too. In fact, she had been following up my

nodules for years with FNA, until the last one which was suspicious.

I had thyroid surgery 34 years ago and the difference is amazing. Then I

was in the hospital for six days, and it was just a cyst wrapped around my

thyroid, couldn't lift my head without help for almost two weeks. This time

I was sitting up in the bed about four hours after the surgery, took myself

to the bathroom and went home the next morning. The recovery was not a

problem.

Best of luck to you,

Alisa,

I like hearing that!!! I have planned to really take it easy through

the week and with my twin sister and mom here it will help me relax

more. I plan to come home Wed. 9/11 from the hospital and have every

intention to make it to church that Sunday!!!!

Take care,

My recovery was quite quick (up and around after a couple of days)

and would have been perfect if my calcium hadn't dropped. That may

not happen to you, but I wish that my surgeon or endo had suggested

that I take calcium supplements right after surgery instead of

waiting until my levels got low. That may not happen in your case,

but you might want to check with your endo about it.

Good Luck!

I was able to visit with all the people that came by to see me so I

think you'll have a nice visit with your Mom and sister.

Dear ,

I had my TT on 8/29/02. I only used major pain medication the day of

the surgery (Thursday) and the next morning. I did use regular Tyl.

a few times for the next two days especially at night just in case I

couldn't sleep. After that I didn't used anything. The feeling is

more annoying than painful after the first day or two. The worst part

is trying to find a comfortable position to sleep and trying to eat

that day. I only had an italian ice the day of the surgery. The next

day, I found that drinking Warm tea before I had my food helped me to

swallow easier. I went home on Friday and rested for the rest of the

weekend. On Tuesday I was already driving my car locally. I was able

to turn my head from side to side enough to drive on the side

streets. On Wednesday I got my car inspected and drove my 4 year old

son to school.

On Thursday, one week later, I drove both kids to school and was able

to drive on the highway to take my younger son to his occupational

therapist in the afternoon.

Now that my stiches are out(done on Friday), I still feel a tightness

on the scar. My doctor discribed it as a finger going across my neck.

He said that it may take up to a month for that feeling to go away.

I still bend my neck down to eat(it is more comfortable)but now

swallowing is much easier.

Overall,it took me 5-6 days to feel good enough, not perfect, to

start my daily activities again. My doctor did suggest that I turn my

neck from side to side(not up) every once in a while so that I don't

get that " stiff Look " some people get. Maybe this helped me to drive

so soon. Everyone resumes their everyday activities at their own

pace. With two kids and my husband going back to work on the Tuesday

after my surgery, I had no choice but to get up and go. Who else was

going to do it? Moms aren't allowed to get sick :-)

I hope this long-winded posting of my own personal experience will

help you to not worry so much about your recovery. Even though

everyone is different, I found that this surgery was not as bad as I

FEARED it would be. Everyone has anxiety before their surgery, I know

I did. What your feeling is normal. You will do great! Go in with a

positive attitude.

Good luck on 9/10/02, you will be in my thoughts and prayers.

, N.Y.
