Welcome to the group. I am glad you found a place where you can

honestly discuss everything from pain to joy, and rage at doctors too,

if need be. Your experience only strengthens my conviction to be in

charge of my medical destiny, because doctors can make mistakes, which

are sometimes very costly.

I am so sorry to have to welcome you to our group. It is always so

sad it find another person has experienced loss. But I am very glad

that you found the group. They are a great group of ladies. I so

sorry that your doctor didn't do his job as he should have...there

are follow ups he should have done that he obviously did not. I

can't even imagine how angry you must be (considering I'm fuming).

So many doctors are so poorly equipped with knowledge to handle

ectopics and I just can't understand why that is when it is such a

life threatening thing. You do sound like you are handling this all

very well emotionally so far. But at any time if you want to unload

on us, please do...that's why we're here. Take care of yourself.

Hi Sara

I'v had MTC for 18 yrs. My T levels have fluctuated thruout the yrs. and the

docs have changed my dosage over a dozen times, sometimes 2-3 x's in one yr. No

big deal. Also, re: menapause. I was irregular all my life & my doc related

that to the thyroid problem. Even after it was removed I still had a lifetime

of irregularity. Menapause is just that. Irregularity for most women so I

wouldn't be alarmed. My GYN put me on the Combipatch and it has really worked

out great for me. NO PILLS! and it takes care of the night sweats pretty good.

I wish you well.

sarahmckasson wrote:Hello all,

Just joined this group. I had thyroid cancer 25 years ago. Have

been on synthetic thyroid ever since. My current dose is 0.3 MG of

Levoxyl. My Dr's office called yesterday and said my dose was to

high. Had a TSH blood test last week - results were less than 0.02.

Why do you think he wants to cut my dose? Does a low TSH mean you

are hyperthyroid? I'm confused. In addition, I just started natural

hormone replacement therapy last month because I was having lots of

hot flashes, etc. Anyone have any information about menopause and

not having a thyroid gland? Sorry this is so rambling. I had almost

my entire thyroid gland removed - they left a small amount to protect

the parathyroid gland.

Thanks for any infomation you may have. Feel free to email me

directly.

Hi ,

Welcome to this very informative group. I believe the general consensus is

that TSH needs to be less than 0.1. At less than 0.02, you're lower than

you need to be. Yes, you are in the hyperthyroid range, but normal

suppression of less than 0.1 is also considered hyperthyroid.

There's various thoughts that hyperthyroidism might cause osteoporosis.

Although, I thought I saw a study that concluded that it was natural

hyperthyroidism that led to osteoporosis and artificial hyperthyroidism

(that's us!) are OK. Anyway, try to find out what TSH your endo is aiming

for.

I can't say anything about menopause and thyca but there was a discussion

here a few weeks ago. You can probably find it in the archives. I

concluded that thyroid problems could cause early menopause but I don't

think there was a consensus.

Hope that helps.

As others have mentioned, the goal for thyca patients is to keep our

TSH <0.1. That is technically hyperthyroid (hyper is generally,

depending on the lab, about 0.3-5.0), and is done to prevent the

cancer from recurring. However, there is some concern about long term

bone loss with levels being very low. So it's a balancing act.

> In addition, I just started natural

When you say natural hrt, are you taking estrogen? From

http://thyroid.about.com/library/weekly/aa032398.htm :

" Women taking estrogen [snip]may need to take more thyroid

replacement hormone. Estrogen increases the body's production of a

blood protein that binds thyroid hormone to it, making it inactive.

For women without thyroids in particular, this can cause a need to

increase the dosage level slightly, as there is no thyroid to

compensate. "

Essentially, yes, menopause can mean a change in thyroid hormone

levels. And, the bone loss issue becomes more important, since it

happens to post-menopausal women. You definitely should be getting a

bone density test (baseline) and taking calcium and doing other things

to ensure healthy bones.

There are actually 4 of those little critters :-). Obviously, you did

not have RAI (radioiodine) treatment done - which is a bit different

than what is usually done these days.
