Hi . Yes, I have heard of others with miscarriage problems that were

tied to thyroid stuff. Get your thyroid stable, and pregnancy should work,

if thyroid is all that's involved. Give your body time to get strong in

order to make and carry a baby in you. Thyroid influences everything in the

body working the way it is meant to. So, everything in your body has been

effected by Hashimoto's and needs time to heal too.

hey guys, havent been around for awhile. ironic to see this post

upon returning. i miscarried a few weeks ago, most likely from my

thyroid meds needing adjustment and such. i conceived within a

couple of days of adding cytomel, but i guess my body just wasnt up

to it yet. <sigh> anyway, i wanted to jump in to say that i have

had 2 very healthy pregnancies and 2 beautiful and healthy children.

i was very careful about having my levels checked and meds adjusted

regularly and everything went fine. :)

i do also have a friend who miscarried a few years back. her doc did

some tests and diagnosed her hypo-t and told her when her thyroid

was straightened out she would have better luck, which she did. she

has had 2 children since. thyroid problems also affect conception

where it can inhibit ovulation. before my thyroid was removed (from

hashi's), i would menstruate 2x monthly, i assume one was during

what would be my ovulation time. i was unable to conceive until

maybe 9 months after the thyroidectomy.

so, i agree with your doc where they say to hold off a couple of

months and wait on your labs. also, when you do conceive, make sure

you remind your ob/gyn to keep an eye on your levels and meds. i had

2 med increases with my first and 3 with my second (all the way up

to 350 mcg of synthroid). i have also been told that good thyroid

levels affect your baby's intelligence, and i must say i have 2 very

smart kiddos over here <wink wink>. i learned on this site

(topper???) that baby's size can be affected. my son was 10 lb 3 oz,

no diabetes or anything. pregnancy and thyroid have so much to do

with each other, but once your body is on track i bet all will be

fine :) good luck!

Angie... sad news... But I'm glad that you at least understand the why of it... and that once things are better, that your body is healthier... that it will be better for the baby if there is another in your future....

It takes a month to a month and a half for the body to adjust.. and then

there will most likely be more adjustments after that... it takes

awhile... remember... patience......

Not sleeping so well at night... having just gone through a horror from

lack of sleep the last few days and how bad I got from it..... sleep is

just soooooo important.... lets talk more about it....

When you take them meds, when and what you eat, supplements (vitamins and

such), sleep habits.....

Might be your body adjusting to the meds, too... might be other stuff...

but the more we pick at it the sooner we can zero in on what is going on

and what you might be able to do to help your body... or talk to your doc

about.....

I hope you let your dr know of the sleep problems.

My thyroid was removed 11/7/05 because of papillary cancer. Before that, I

have been medicated to the gills in order to get good enough sleep. I have

been on synthetic T4 since 12/9/05 and do a lot of toss and turn sleep.

Eventually I get up because I'm just tired of tossing and turning. Even

being medicated to the gills, enough to knock out 2 horses. I don't know if

it's the thyroid med or the emotional fallout of dealing with the dreaded

" c " word. I have an appt today with the doc who does the sleep meds, not

that there's more for me to take, and I'll let endo know. Out on WebMd, I

think, it says insomnia can be a side effect of meds, or of being hypo or

hyper. Yeh - real helpful there I know; Not. The doc who does my sleep

meds has been excited, thinking my sleep problems were thyroid related and

I'll be able to get off those meds. We'll see.

Jane have they checked your adrenals yet? If they have become fatigued cuz of the hyper then they could be misfiring.. that could be what is fighting the 'horse meds' the adrenals doing their best to beat what they perceive as a fatigue of the body that needs to be conquered... just a thought....

So many of us end up with tired adrenals.... and to get them happy and working correctly again, with proper timing.. .is magic....

Thanks for taking the time to help me figure this out :)

As for what time I take my meds and stuff:

I take them at 8 am. With about half a glass of water. Don't eat for an

hour after.

I am not on any vitamins but plan on starting prenatals as soon as

possible (which I was told to take at night so it wouldnt interfere

with the meds).

My diet isn't great at all. I tend to like bread and cheese and that's

about it. :( I have never been a big eater but recently I have had to

have breakfast or I get shakey (normally I wouldn't get hungry at all

until lunch)

I usually eat a bagel in the AM (1 hr after meds of course)

Lunch is my bigger meal and eat whatever I have at the house

(sandwhich, cheese sand. etc) or go out to lunch with my husband or

friends.

Dinners are usually either pasta or pork (not a big red meat eater) and

veggies.

I drink a lot of caffeine ( I've decided to switch to decaf though

because of the palpitations) soda during the day (about 5 glasses)

I also smoke and am seriously wanting to quit (I put a call in to the

nurse about using the patch while on the synthroid)

Normally I will fall asleep at around 10 but the sleepless nights I get

tired at the regular time but can't fall asleep and then get a shakey

underlying " rushing feeling " (it's the best way I can describe it),

still tired but can't sleep (like I took a bunch of speed or

something).

I feel like it is totally the meds and wonder if I am in the hyper

swing of hashi's but then why would the dr prescribe me meds? I can't

find a lot of info on hashi so I feel clueless about what to expect or

even how the disease operates.

Here is some (very long winded) history on the sleeplessness and my

general background:

When I first went to my gp back in October I went because of the chest

pains I was having. I have had them off and on for the past 4 years.

Finally, it was so bad I went to the ER (but ended up leaving after

waiting 4 hrs). The next day I went to the gp, she checked my thyroid

and it felt swollen, put me on a holter monitor and sent me for blood

tests for my thyroid. My holter monitor came back fine (no abnormal

heart issues). The thyroid hormone tests came back in the normal range

(with the TSH on the low normal side, 0.4). Which from what I have

read, low is hyper. She sent me for an U/S as well and that showed

" increased blood flow to the thyroid, possibly acute thyroiditis or

chronic thyroiditis (which is hashimoto's, right?) " .

My mother who has hypo sent me to her endo in Dec. He said he believed

I had Hashi and sent me for more blood tests (hormone and antibody). He

told me that if the hormones came back abnormal then he would start me

on meds but couldn't promise they would and said he might have to

monitor me for a while. At the time of my visit I believe I was on the

hypo side because I was having what I call " one of my bad

weeks/days/months etc " because I was exhausted and miserable (when you

are a stay at home mom with an 8 year old at school all day, who

doesn't even have enough energy to start the dishwasher, it's odd to be

that tired as you all know I am sure). They called a week later and

gave me a presc. for 75 sythroid. I was having one of my good weeks at

this point and had a lot of energy for the first time in a while. So I

started the meds and was up until 5 am the next morning, had heart

palpitations, bad leg cramps, etc. I called them that morning and told

them my side effects and they told me to take half a pill for two weeks

and then start the full dosage. Today marks two weeks. At first (last

week) the half a pill seemed to be working well. I had some energy, was

in a good mood, etc. I had some trouble the first few days getting to

sleep but nothing compared to the one night with the full pill.

Finally, After week one I could sleep no problem. This past Sunday I

started feeling tired again in the day and didn't want to talk to

anyone, my daughter was annoying me, and my husband too (for no

reason). By Monday, I had trouble sleepiing at night, could feel heart

palpitation when laying down again, was up till almost 3 am (and had to

wake at 6:30 to get my daughter to school). Tuesday I felt terrible,

exhausted, angry, sad, and again had trouble sleeping last night (was

up till 1 am). Today I was supposed to start my full dose but decided

not to take any at all (only because I can't stand another night of

sleep troubles). I feel good today and believe I will fall asleep

easily tonight (I don't have that underlying " rushing " feeling inside

that I had for the last few days). I will take my full dose tomorrow.

So basically the sleeplessness was only after I took the one full dose

of 75 and after the end of week two of the half dose.

Thanks for listening!

I am sorry about the miscarriage. :( My first one back in July was at

13 wks and that was pretty rough (I would have been due any day now).

The last was in Oct. and was a very early miscarriage.

My first pregnancy (my daughter) was perfect, no problems whatsoever.

So the miscarriages were a shock and very disappointing. It was,

however, a relief to find out what could be causing them. Before I was

diag. with thyroid issues my mid-wife was at a loss because everything

else checked out fine with me. I had a hard time believing it was just

" one of those things " as some people say about miscarriages. I just

knew something was wrong with me.

Anyway, enough rambling from me for today. ;)

Thanks for the hope!

You need to raise your dose up to the 75 because you are now having symptoms of hypo again. This is why the dosing is gradually raised. You sound very sensitive to the raises, so you may have some adrenal weakness problems underlying this, which usually comes from them having to carry the load of a low thyroid for an extended period of time, on their own. This return of tiredness and such is part of the feedback system of the hypothalamus/pituitary/thyroid/adrenal axis. They all work hand in hand with each other and are all very dependent on each other for support. The circle has now been broken again, with the pituitary downplaying the thyroid more, so there needs to be an increase in med, so that your body tissues will get enough thyroid hormone. Your body was not used to getting what it needs, so it takes time to get it used to enough hormone for all purposes. The antibodies are also doing their share of dirty work to make you feel this way, too.
