RE: Please help.See answers belowWendihttp://www.lactivist.combreastfeeding info & resources1. Is it normal to still be bleeding 2 months after your baby's born? Thisis not normal and she should talk to a different doctor. More likely thannot it is because she is trying to do way too much. But she could have aretained placenta and that would inhibit her milk supply so she needs to besure either way. She should get checked.2. Could this be her period even though it's lasted 2 weeks? Probably not, probably after birth bleeding that is from some cause.3. Would her period make the flavor of her milk change so that her daughterwould be less likely to nurse or to want to nurse? That is probably not itat all. My guess is nipple confusion, being unsatisfied at the breast andgeneral just not getting it.4. Should she wait till she stops bleeding to try to get her daughter tonurse? Absolutely not she will lose her supply. Keep nursing and trying tonurse, get a lactation aid to use at the breast. Get a double electric pumpto protect her supply, finger or cup feed and lose all bottle and nipplesthey are only sabotage at this point.5. Is there any advice anyone can give me about how to get Robyn tonurse(she's always trying to push away from the breast)? Get a lactationaid so she is getting breastmilk readily at the breast without struggle.Finger feed so that she gets the hang of sucking and drawing thefinger/nipple WAY back into the mouth.6. Should I tell Angie to start expressing her milk for Robyn andbottlefeeding it to her? No bottlefeeding!!!! cup or finger feed. See mywebsite re: finger feeding. Double electric pump to protect supply7. Or should I tell her to quit with the bottles and just keep trying thebreast until Robyn gets used to it? Quit bottles just cup feeding and keepat the breast with a lactation aid if possible. If she gets latched on usebreast compression (my website under resources and jack newman articles) toget more milk to the baby quicker.I think that's it for now, but if I think of any more questions, I'll besure to ask! :)Call La Leche League and get a leader to help. If you tell me where you areI will find one. Get mom and baby in a very clean bath and let baby startin the water and climb up moms belly to latch on by herself. Babies do verywell this way! Keep up the good work!WendiKrista________________________________________________________________________Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com------------------------------------------------------------------------Remember four years of good friends, bad clothes, explosive chemistryexperiments.http://click./1/4051/0/_/410002/_/958155935/------------------------------------------------------------------------Give the Gift of Life Breastfeed!http://www.lactivist.com

Shaa, she surely does 'have enough milk' for the baby. Problems are going to

get worse if she's giving formula and thinking it won't affect her milk

supply. She needs to be nursing, nursing, nursing--no bottles (formula

anyway, and I'd avoid them altogether for awhile yet). I never had these

problems but I know from being on this list that some of the other women have

said that starting with formula can pretty quickly sabbatoge the

breastfeeding relationship in one way or another. Please tell your dil to

have faith in her body's ability to adequately feed the baby--just let him

nurse her enough to get the supply he needs.

Does your dil have a computer? It would probably help her out to be able to

read some of this information first hand (not that you're not being a

tremendous help by passing it along). She just needs to hear from others

who've been in her situation and have made it work, along with all the great

ideas and suggestions on things that may be to come yet in her breastfeeding

journey. Does she have any friends or family who've successfully breastfed

that she can call on? Or has she thought of contacting the La Leche League

in your area? I just have to tell you I'm really worried about her losing

faith, getting misinformation, finding herself doubting her body's ability

and getting frustrated enough to quit. I forget how old your grandbaby is

but it is sort of tough to get it all figured out and going smoothly in the

very beginning, but if she hangs in there I felt like by about 6 wks we had

it 'down pat'. And that was some of the best advise someone gave me was to

just hang in there for 6 wks. Luckily I had a little guy that was

practically born nursing so things were very smooth and easy for us.

Anyway, I think it's so great that you're so active and supportive to your

dil. She has to be very thankful for your help. Keep us posted on how she's

doing--I know we all want her to succeed!

How was it determined that your DIL " doesn't have enough milk " for the baby

if she wasn't going to go back to the doctor for another two weeks?? If

she was pumping 2 ounces, she has plenty, and the person who told her

otherwise has too little information and/or education.

Why isn't she trying to increase her supply?

Formula has many restrictions on how it's handled. Read the label. Never

over dilute formula with water because it can send babies into the

Emergency Room with water intoxication and damage their kidneys!

It has to be refrigerated at all times unless it is not opened or the baby

Shaa,

Why do you think she doesn't have enough? Did the pediatrician say that?

Are you counting diapers? Have you read on my website about a nurse-in?

That is really what she needs.

First off, what makes your DIL think she does not ahve enough milk? that is

very rare. I have on many occasions thought I did not ahve enough milk,

because my baby would nure around the clock for a couple of days in a row,

they are going through a growth spurt, and did this extra nursing to build

up the mommys supply. after a few days of continous nursing, my DD would

slow down, and then my milk would leak all over the place. I bet her baby

is just going through a growth spurt, and if she just sticks with it, she

will have plenty of milk. When I nursed my son(he is almost 3 now) I told

my husband at one point that I need to give him formula because I did not

have enough milk for him, and my dh told me no way, that I do ahve enough

milk, and he was right. so now when the same thing happens I know I ahve

enough milk.

Shaa,

The reason he is throwing up formula is probably that it is very hard to

digest. It is not a suitable alternative to breastmilk, there isn't one.

If you are worried about him the best thing you can do is to hire a

Lactation Consultant with these initials IBCLC and get your DIL some very

qualified help. Do what the LC says and get that baby nursing well.

Why do you think she doesn't have enough milk? If she is concerned, there are

many things she can do to boost her supply, like pumping with a double electric

pump (she can rent one), putting the baby to the breast more frequently, etc.

Please let us know why you think she doesn't have enough milk and we can help

with ways to boost her supply. If she is putting the baby to the breast at

least 10-12 times a day it would be very unusual for her not to have enough

milk.

I am concerned about your question regarding formula. You need to read the

label and follow the directions exactly. It needs to be refrigerated and used

up within a certain number of days -- it should say all this on the label.

Also, it should have directions for mixing, diluting, or not diluting, depending

on what kind you have.

Please let us know more details and we can help find solutions. It would be

great for him to be able to have only breastmilk.
