It's too bad Cameron's mom doesn't want to breastfeed. The book I have on Medications and Mother's Milk, by Hale, PhD, RPh, says that in breastfeeding mothers who take 50-100 mgs of Zoloft daily, the levels found in breastfed babies is undetectable. Zoloft sounds like it would be pretty safe to take while breastfeeding. Another anti-depression med listed as an alternative is Paxil, or paroxetine. Anyone else with Hale's, please review these two to make sure I didn't overlook anything. Cameron's life would be so much better if he could receive breastmilk... however, if his mother isn't willing to feed him as often as he needs, this is moot. She should know that she can continue to breastfeed, even if she needs anti-depressants, and that the closeness between her and her baby might help brighten her outlook on life. She should also be watched closely until the depression passes... some mothers who have depression have been known to act very strangely, and no one wants this baby to get hurt! Guest guest
Shaa, It could account for a sleepy baby but is generally safe. I personally feel that drugs and interventions in labor are one of the biggest hindrances to breastfeeding. I know everyone has a story about someone who got drugs or a c-section and had no problems breastfeeding but it is my general experience that drugs definitely interfere with breastfeeding. There aren't too many great pain relievers but they are generally considered safe while breastfeeding. I just had to be a breastfeeding mom who needed a pump. The clinic I went to had lots of things for nursing moms... bras, too. The pump I got was a Medela manual pump... but when that wasn't helping me increase my supply, they gave me the tubing and parts I needed for the pump, and I got to use the pump there at the clinic free of charge. When I needed a pump for more frequent use, they worked out a grant for me from a local pump rental station. Just have to ask!
