Guest guest
Well, mine did resolve exactly what form supposedly...according to both local pathologist and Mayo Clinic. Of course they took three samples from my lung. And latest CT shows the scars from the surgery, stitches creating some irritation in lower area, and I will be very surprised if my left lung (one autopsied) isn't always more problem than right one. Normally they do right, unless one is worse than other, but did left on me hoping to get lymph node too. > > > > > > > > Hi all, > > > > > > > > I know several of you have been through the VATS procedure and I > am > > > > just 1 week and 3 days out. Guest guest
They also paralyze you. To tell you how serious the anesthesia is my anesthesiologist got paid almost twice what the surgeon did for the procedure. > > > > > > > > Hi all, > > > > > > > > I know several of you have been through the VATS procedure and I > > am > > > > just 1 week and 3 days out. Guest guest
, I went to a lung specialist and the results were inconclusive and my doc wasn't even " cute " ... 'course I had mine a long time ago but they took a large enough sample that it was tested several times. Since mine was so long ago I wonder now if it was really a VATS or just laprascopically done. I just know I had 3 more " holes " in body. I joked that if we opended all the " holes " in my body and stuck a garden hose in my mouth I could roll around on the ground and be used as a sprinkler. lol Next time I'll go for cute. Guest guest
Oh now my surgeon in 2005 on my colon resection was incredibly beautiful woman. Had zero issues and record quick recovery. Now for the VATS was just nerdy looking man and had some issues. So, I've learned. Any future surgeries will be by hot women surgeons only. See, I can play the same game you two are with your search for cute doctors. But, I even have a scientific sampling to support my decision. lol > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi all, > > > > > > > > > > > > I know several of you have been through the VATS procedure > > and I > > > am > > > > > > just 1 week and 3 days out. Guest guest
, I think others here have experienced pain for a long time, too. I'm sure they will address this. Guest guest
Hi here, I had my OLB three years from this march and still suffer from nerve damage. My surgeon acted appalled that I still felt pain after a month. He insisted I was the only patient that ever experienced this!!! I found a Pain Dr. and also an anaesthetist who said that this doctor really only did heart surgeries and we wondered how many open lung biopsies he had ever done. You really have to spread the lungs apart and go through many nerves and nerves can be cut and damaged during the process. I wished I had asked how many open lung biopsies this guy had performed. I was in Colorado Springs and I could have even driven to Denver to have it done more professionally. The pain doctor gave me a series of cortisone injections in my rib area and it helped somewhat for a few months but he also gave me pain medication which helped a lot. I am still taking pain medication. I take hydromorphone. I have factor 5 and 11 blood disorders and can't take anything with aspirin or aspirin products in it and I can't take any anti-inflammatories which would greatly help. They usually say if people are going to have residual pain from open lung biopsy, it may last up to two years, otherwise you may have it (like me) longer or for life. I got lucky I guess. Sometimes I confuse the pain with going downhill with my lung damage because the pain can be so great which is scary but my pulmonologist insists that you can not feel your lungs... it is my nerves and muscles around the lungs that I am feeling. Often times I feel like I have been swimming for hours and when I inhale my lungs are so weak I truly believe that it is lung discomfort. Does anyone else feel that way? I can't stand when I go to my lung transplant hospital where I am considered on the bottom of the list because I don't need it now and that says a doctor is saying a different thing than my pulmonologist at a different location and I read that on the board when your doctors all say different things.... for instance, the lung transplant facility at Fairfax Inova, VA put me on advair for my slight wheezing and also informed me they would probably give me a colonoscopy if I were to get a transplant. Have you ever heard of that? My pulmonologist doctor told me I didn't really need the advair, it's another steroid. He put me on nasal cort for my post nasal drip. He says I have NSIP where my reading at the other hospital thought it was an IPF... I'll go with the NSIP anytime. When there is no clear answer and no clear cure what's a patient to do? One more thing I wanted to note, (now that I have my son typing for me, since my typing is so slow from dyslexia and since I'm computer illiterate, but learning) Disneyland is one of my favorite places on earth. I'm a kid at heart and I was so excited about taking my seven year old daughter there last summer. Even though I can't give up loving something I've loved for so long, I must say having this disease has changed my be-bop-ity self in Disneyland. I had to give in and get a wheel chair. I found myself unable to repeat the rides I used to love. I loved it for my kids but part of the kid in me had died and I realized I had a disease... I was depressed for a long period of time because I'm trying to find out who I am in relation to who I was and how my kids see me in relationship to how they saw me then. But I wouldn't give up on seeing Mickey again and I hope those of you who want to won't either. I send my prayers and wishes... I think of you all often and I would love to meet you all either in California or Texas. Not so new anymore, - W Re: Question about VATS Caro, I second that...the other thing about a VATS that I didn't realise beforehand is that it is a VERY complex anthaesthetic. ..gosh they put one of your lungs OUT OF ACTION & then have to reinflate it for goodness sake.! Guest guest
A suggestion for you or anyone for whom typing is an effort or limits your ability to communicate as much as you would like. Get some voice recognition software and dictate using it. Its actually gotten quite good compared to where it once was. Might want to consider that for next occasion someone is getting you a present. > > > > > > > > Hi all, > > > > > > > > I know several of you have been through the VATS procedure and I > > am > > > > just 1 week and 3 days out. Guest guest
, Funny your doc said he was surprised you had pain after a month. I was told (after I had the biopsy, by another patient) that I would probably feel pain for about a year. And it would sometimes feel like I was having a heart attack. The muscles would spasm so bad. But, it really did take a year and I just experience some numbness where the biopsy was taken. We have to be our own advocates, that's for sure. We know ourselves the best. Guest guest
Oh my goodness!! You have been through a terrible time!! That was the exact same thing my surgeon said when he was told I had pneumonia in both lungs. Said go to the ER cuz it wasn't from the surgery. Sometimes, you just feel like it is a "pass the buck" world!! Caro wrote: Dear Caro, I knew there was something ODD going on on Day 3 the day before I left hospital. A sensation like a BAND around my ribcage making it painful to expand my lungs. My surgeon said not to worry it "wouldn't be anything to do with the actual surgery, it'd just be your underlying lung condition"...oh Yeh! By day 5 there was a big stiff area of swelling right across under ny R Breast...very numb & lots of pain & discomfort underneath.....rang surgeon....go see your GP (General Practitioner)....off to him, got in straight away.....OEDEMA....he rings Surgeon who's in theatre...organises urgent X-rays to check for nasty things like pneumothorax, blood clots, plueurisy etc etc.....all negative....go home it seems like there's been a leak of fluid from the surgery site into the surrounding tissue...it'll settle down in the next couple of days...oh YEH! by Sunday (Day 12) I was getting a bit SCARED..instead of settling ,the pain was worse (Codeine Forte X 2 tabs weren't doing anything except stop me climbing the wall) & the sensations were MOST disagreeable.....off to A & E like my GP told me to if anything progressed or didn't disappear......they were great...more X-rays..lots of encouragement, interest in this rarely seen condition...young training Interns dragged in for a 'look see n' listen'......Surgeon came down from Theatre when he'd finished patching up an accident victim....he said " Mmmm you haven't been very happy since you left hospital have you! I looked at him & said it wasn't a question of 'being happy' I didn't want to be re-admitted I just wanted to know WHY I didn't recover from the VATS with a few Panadol in the five days he told me to expect I would take & what the heck WAS this pain 'cos I want to TRAVEL down to Sydney in a weeks time goddammit!!!!!!(that's Aussie FRENCH!)........OH....well it seems we might have 'nicked a nerve' while we were in there...it does happen you know!" .......... Tell me ABOUT IT - I KNOW!!!!!!! That was last June...the sensations are still there but like a 'shadow' now..apparently it can take some people 2 YEARS to completely recover from a nicked netve, I consoider myself very, VERY lucky. THe worst of it was over by the time I went to the UK in October! What really makes me mad is that the VATS hasn't definitively solved what type of IPF I have..the blinkin' lung sample was too SMALL to be conclusive & he only took a sample from 1 site! If I knew then what I know now....I'd have gone to Brisbane & found a specialist lung surgeon NOT a cute country surgeon with great generalist skill & good links to the other Drs in the same Town! It was all very well to have the convenience of using a nice Private Local Hospital BUT there are times when travelling to a major city outfit is the best way to go! Guest guest
Thanks for the B-day wish, Beth. Next week is Hollywood week!! I have a few favorites already, but not one in particular. You know the girl who got up and sang "How do I live without you?" 2 days after her dad died? I could NEVER have done that in a million years!!! I would have cracked long before she did!!! Hey, we can WATCH it together!!! Caro Beth wrote: Caro, Sorry I somehow missed wishing you a Happy Birthday!! Sorry about that and many wishes and love to you! Guest guest
I don't know how she managed to do that either. To be able to perform when you're going through such emotional turmoil is pretty amazing. It's really hard to say who I like at this point. It's kind of a blur, the ones that stick out in my mind are the crazy ones...know what I mean? I'm so sorry you are going through this nonsense with your doctor. It's hard to imagine leaving your practise and patients with no coverage. I wish there was something I could do for you. If I could snap my fingers and bring you hear I'd take you to see Dr. on at Duke myself and then we'd go out for lunch!! Guest guest
Rest assured you are NOT , I've spoken by telephone to another woman with IPF who had her VATS done in Brisbane & she too had nerve damage. The Lung Transplant Specialist I saw in Brisbane actually asked me if it had occurred to me. When I confirmed that it had indeed it was him who told me it could take 2 or more years to subside & that it wasn't incommon as a complication! in Oz> > > >> > > > Hi all, > > > > > > > > I know several of you have been through the VATS procedure and I > > am > > > > just 1 week and 3 days out. Guest guest
It's funny to hear you say that Caro...writing about it has made me think back to how it all went...I joined this Forum AFTER all this so I'd never actually written about it in such detail before now. I'd already entered the 'what the heck' stage, that I'm still in really. It has been such an education to read everyone else's experiences from the time they first went to their Medicos, through to diagnosis from Specialists. There are just so many courageous people on this Board dealing with so much more than I do that my difficulties are miniscule & not worth mentioning by comparison. So I do the 'joker' & usually keep my medical stuff on the back burner....every now n' then the milk scalds & I get a 'spill-over' on the odd subject (like nasty drugs Etc) Thanks for sharing your experience & I'm very worried for you feeling so alone in your illness right now. Guest guest
Hi , Well, I will say this on the pulmo in India subject and as I have cried until I have no more tears today, I won't mention any more. Called this morning and found a new pulmo doc 2 hours away. They said all I need is a referral from present pulmo. Called their office and receptionist said, "nurse can't do that. Doc has to do it., and he is STILL out of the country!!" So, I am like, "so I can't see anybody?" I was thinking, I NEED A SPECIALIST!!! I just told her I wanted to go until he gets back, since it may be 6 weeks. Actually, I was just going to change pulmos and not ever go back. She told me go back to the ER and that is all they can do. Pain in my back is horrible every time I take a deep breath still. I burst into tears before I even got off the phone with her. I SOOOO do not want to go back to the ER. They don't have any pulmonary specialists there, so why go? Guest guest
Hi Carolyn. Yes, I watch them both, but Big Brother is my all time favourite reality show and I’m soooooo excited it’s coming back on early this year (does this mean it won’t be on in the summer though???) I usually get the Internet feeds too, however, won’t be able to do that this time around, since school is still in and I can’t stay up all hours of the night and still expect to get up with the kids in the morning. LOL! How about Survivor? It started last night. Do you watch that too? I think it will be pretty good. Dawn in N.B. (who, by the way, LOVES TV!!!) LOL! Re: Re: Question about VATS Thanks Ann!! I hope you have a wonderful B-day coming up, also!! I was feeling somewhat better yesterday, but went to Wal-Mart today only for 30 minutes and I was exhausted. Came straight back home. So frustrating to get so tired so quickly!! Anyone on the group watching American Idol or Big Brother this year? Big Brother normally begins in the summer, but this year they are starting it on February 12!! Should be interesting!!! Caro onecarolinagirl <onecarolinagirl> wrote: Find them fast with Yahoo! Guest guest
Caro, I totally get why you don't want to go to the ER, it's not someplace anyone in their right mind would want to go. But if it's down to a choice of going or in a few days ending up actually being admitted to the hospital, I'd choose going to the ER. Please keep in mind how dangerous pneumonia is for folks like us. Please don't let this go on anymore. I know you feel sad, and frustrated and abandoned. YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO FEEL THAT WAY. Unfortunately in order to take care of yourself, you're going to have to put your anger to good use and get yourself another pulmo. If that means going to your family doctor to get a new referral or it means going to an ER to get a referral, you have to advocate for yourself. It shouldn't be this way, we shouldn't have to fight so hard when we're already sick and tired but we have to cope with what is. I'm sorry and I wish I could be of some help. Know that I'm here on the sidelines cheering you on!! Beth in NC age 48 Fibrotic NSIP 06/06 "For as long as I shall live, I will testify to Love." Re: Re: Question about VATS Hi , Well, I will say this on the pulmo in India subject and as I have cried until I have no more tears today, I won't mention any more. Called this morning and found a new pulmo doc 2 hours away. They said all I need is a referral from present pulmo. Called their office and receptionist said, "nurse can't do that. Doc has to do it., and he is STILL out of the country!!" So, I am like, "so I can't see anybody?" I was thinking, I NEED A SPECIALIST!! ! Caro <gina.francis@ bigpond.com> wrote: It's funny to hear you say that Caro...writing about it has made me think back to how it all went...I joined this Forum AFTER all this so I'd never actually written about it in such detail before now.
