Caro I am sorry you are having pain but here goes. I

had mine done and was in pain for weeks even though

everything went normal.I couldnt wear a Bra and was

uncomfortable for at least 6 weeks.I was never told

about the pain under the breast and thought for sure

something was wrong but it is normal.I would suggest

you take the pain med just to avert the really painful

time and allow yourself to heal.Good Luck.

Thanks . That was really worrying me because the pain is so sharp. I haven't even attempted to wear a bra yet. I am going to a family get together Saturday, though, so I will have to then. I am so afraid I am going to be even more miserable!! I feel better knowing that this is a "normal" thing to be in such pain, but surely wish it would ease up soon. It kinda feels like it is burning on the outside of my skin, but there is no rash at all where the pain is. It burns on the outside, then there is a sharp pain inside. Sighing, laughing, coughing, and sneezing are the absolute worst!!! Thanks for the info, . It really means a lot. This group is so helpful. So many of you are far more advanced in this disease than I am, and you knowledge and wisdom is such a comfort. You can read all the documentaries, clinical trials, and articles on the Net or anywhere else, but actually hearing from

I haven't worn a bra since mine....lol....although I have heard from

women on the subject and knowing the location of my incisions fully

understand how that would be the worst thing.

Ok, pain is normal but do keep an eye on it too. First, make sure

you're getting enough inspired volume into a spirometer or something

of that nature. If the pain is restricting your breathing and holding

you to 1000 ml or less, then the danger of pneumonia increases.

Second, do call or get to doctor if it worsens in any way.

I would hope you were shown but for coughing the best easing of the

pain is to get a pillow and hold it against your chest/lung when you

do. Amazing how it will reduce the pain. My hospital even had special

pillows for it, about the size of sofa pillows.

Your surgeon should be able to tell you what's right when it comes to

the pain meds. While you don't want your lungs to become dependent on

them and not work as hard as they should, you don't want your

inspiration levels to drop too low either.

Hopefully, they gave you some breathing exercises to do as well, at

least using the spirometer. It's crucial after any significant

surgery but especially this one.

The pillow thing came as a very pleasant surprise to me when I was

first told in the hospital. Thought oh it can't help...oh was I wrong.

Even with full inhaling, not trying to control and keep it in

the " zone? " Do you mind looking at the brand and model so I can see

if the readings are as I'm use to? I have two different models, one

from the hospital and one from respiratory rehab. If we're talking

the same scale that would concern me greatly and I would want to talk

to the surgeon immediately. Maybe even you need some home respiratory

treatment such as a nebulizer. I don't have any idea, but I ignored

pain that I shouldn't have and let it build and now am clearing it

all up, hopefully. That's the thing. We say pain is normal, but its a

matter of degree. It's also a matter of how strong your lungs were

going in. Are you on oxygen? What flow? How are you saturation

levels? I would also say better to overreact than underreact. if in

question, call surgeon and get in. If he says its normal then great.

That is a good idea. I just got off the phone with doctor's office. The pain got worse every time I take a breath. I have been taking short, choppy breaths, just so it won't hurt so bad. The nurse talked to the surgeon and he said it sounds like I have pleurisy. I have to go in the morning for a chest x-ray and go from there. Hopefully they won't have to put in another chest tube. Will keep you all posted. Wish me luck!! Yes Caro I had strong pain that lasted ages...I

went back to my GP, got checked for pulmonary embolisms, pneumothorax

etc. I was told not to worry it would be a few more days but it got

worse so I ended up in th ER Department 'cos it was quite severe. There

they decided after more checks that it was a 'nicked' nerve! I was on

heavy duty pain killers for a long time & now I stil have 'shadow'

pain & tingley sensation.

In any case you should report any worsening pain & get checked. I

was told to expect moderate discomfort for about a week..I got a lot

more than I had bargained on!

Hi , I did go and get it checked out on Friday and they said I have pneumonia in both lungs, far worse in the right. Sent me home on Levaquin and prednisone taper. I have appointment with the surgeon tomorrow for follow up. Have to get chest xray first and then go to appointment afterwards. My mom said pack a bag just in case they keep you. Guess I was right to go and get it checked out. Wal-Mart was out of the Levaquin so I was not able to get it until today. Have 2 more days left on the prednisone. Don't know what the xray will show tomorrow, but hopefully will be good news. Humidity is really high here today and I haven't been breathing so well. I called the pulmo doc this morning that I was supposed to follow up with this week and he is still STUCK IN INDIA and can't get back. They said for definite, he won't be back this week. Told me to follow up with my family physician. I don't

even have one here yet since I moved, so depending on what happens tomorrow, guess I will need to find one on Wednesday. Until then, guess I will wait and see what tomorrow brings. I am thankful it was not a nicked nerve for me. I can only imagine that must have been horribly painful!! Don't you wonder sometimes why they can't find these things sooner than they do with all the modern day technology? The only pain killer they gave me was Lorcet Plus (which the surgeon gave me) and I am nearly out of those. I was planning to ask for a refill tomorrow since my pulmo doc is out of pocket, but don't know if they will give it to me or not. Guess we will find out. Hope you all have a great night!! Will let you know tomorrow how it goes. Oh yeah, I had a wonderful B-day today!!! (Was just glad to have another one!!) Kids and my cousin and her husband took me out

to dinner at Margarita's (a Mexican restaurant here) and 4 guys came out and sang Happy Birthday in Spanish (the only thing I understood was Uno, Dos, Tres, Quatro!! LOL!!!). But it was really fun. What is even funnier is that it turns out the guys who sang live in the apartment next door to me!!!! What a hoot!!! I knew they looked awfully familiar!!! Was really a fun day!! missed that it was your birthday yesterday.

I’m also sorry to hear how sick you are! I hope that you are able to get in contact with

Question about VATS

Hi , I did go and get it checked out on Friday and

they said I have pneumonia in both lungs, far worse in the right. Sent me

home on Levaquin and prednisone taper. I have appointment with the

surgeon tomorrow for follow up. Have to get chest xray first and then go

to appointment afterwards. My mom said pack a bag just in case they keep

you. Guess I was right to go and get it checked out. Wal-Mart was

out of the Levaquin so I was not able to get it until today. Have 2 more

days left on the prednisone. Don't know what the xray will show tomorrow,

but hopefully will be good news. Humidity is really high here today and I

haven't been breathing so well. I called the pulmo doc this morning that

I was supposed to follow up with this week and he is still STUCK IN INDIA and

can't get back. They said for definite, he won't be back this week.

Told me to follow up with my family physician. I don't even have one here

yet since I moved, so depending on what happens tomorrow, guess I will need to

find one on Wednesday. Until then, guess I will wait and see what

tomorrow brings. I am thankful it was not a nicked nerve for me. I

can only imagine that must have been horribly painful!! Don't you wonder

sometimes why they can't find these things sooner than they do with all the

modern day technology?

The only pain killer they gave me was Lorcet Plus

(which the surgeon gave me) and I am nearly out of those. I was planning

to ask for a refill tomorrow since my pulmo doc is out of pocket, but don't

know if they will give it to me or not. Guess we will find out.

know tomorrow how it goes. Oh yeah, I had a wonderful B-day

today!!! (Was just glad to have another one!!) Kids and my cousin

and her husband took me out to dinner at Margarita's (a Mexican restaurant

here) and 4 guys came out and sang Happy Birthday in Spanish (the only thing I

understood was Uno, Dos, Tres, Quatro!! LOL!!!). But it was really

fun. What is even funnier is that it turns out the guys who sang live in

the apartment next door to me!!!! What a hoot!!! I knew they looked

awfully familiar!!! Was really a fun day!!

Since I probably will be having the VATS procedure soon, how long

does the danger of contracting Pneumonia last? I was surprised to

hear how far out of the procedure Carolyn was and still had pneumonia.

Well, I think I carried a very mild case of pneumonia due to some

hospital sloppiness perhaps and don't appear completely over it and

my VATS was on Oct 17. However, I have been feeling pretty well so

nothing like Caro.

You say " since I probably will be having the VATS procedure soon " but

I don't recall hearing you say why you're going to have it. Don't get

me wrong, I know why I did and am glad I did, but everyone has to

have their own reason. In my opinion it is a place for the doctor to

advise and education but you need to decide.

Ann,

I was one of the people who got an infection and three months after the Vats got pneumonia. To avoid this my suggestions would be:

1. Get a pneumonia shot months before the VATS.

2. Start taking antibiotics days before the VATS ( they automatically give them to smokers and should for lung patients but often they don't-insist if they say no-it is protocol across the country)

3. Baby yourself for months after the procedure. Even if you feel good treat yourself like an invalid. Your lungs will have staples, they have been traumatized, and I think when we are run down we are so susceptible to illness. Sarcoid/PF 3/2006 California

regimen in advance. Had pneumonia shot but not far enough in advance.

Dear Caro,

I knew there was something ODD going on on Day 3 the day before I left hospital. A sensation like a BAND around my ribcage making it painful to expand my lungs. My surgeon said not to worry it "wouldn't be anything to do with the actual surgery, it'd just be your underlying lung condition"...oh Yeh! By day 5 there was a big stiff area of swelling right across under ny R Breast...very numb & lots of pain & discomfort underneath.....rang surgeon....go see your GP (General Practitioner)....off to him, got in straight away.....OEDEMA....he rings Surgeon who's in theatre...organises urgent X-rays to check for nasty things like pneumothorax, blood clots, plueurisy etc etc.....all negative....go home it seems like there's been a leak of fluid from the surgery site into the surrounding tissue...it'll settle down in the next couple of days...oh YEH! by Sunday (Day 12) I was getting a bit SCARED..instead of settling ,the pain was worse (Codeine Forte X 2 tabs weren't doing anything except stop me climbing the wall) & the sensations were MOST disagreeable.....off to A & E like my GP told me to if anything progressed or didn't disappear......they were great...more X-rays..lots of encouragement, interest in this rarely seen condition...young training Interns dragged in for a 'look see n' listen'......Surgeon came down from Theatre when he'd finished patching up an accident victim....he said " Mmmm you haven't been very happy since you left hospital have you! I looked at him & said it wasn't a question of 'being happy' I didn't want to be re-admitted I just wanted to know WHY I didn't recover from the VATS with a few Panadol in the five days he told me to expect I would take & what the heck WAS this pain 'cos I want to TRAVEL down to Sydney in a weeks time goddammit!!!!!!(that's Aussie FRENCH!)........OH....well it seems we might have 'nicked a nerve' while we were in there...it does happen you know!" .......... Tell me ABOUT IT - I KNOW!!!!!!!

That was last June...the sensations are still there but like a 'shadow' now..apparently it can take some people 2 YEARS to completely recover from a nicked netve, I consoider myself very, VERY lucky. THe worst of it was over by the time I went to the UK in October!

What really makes me mad is that the VATS hasn't definitively solved what type of IPF I have..the blinkin' lung sample was too SMALL to be conclusive & he only took a sample from 1 site! If I knew then what I know now....I'd have gone to Brisbane & found a specialist lung surgeon NOT a cute country surgeon with great generalist skill & good links to the other Drs in the same Town! It was all very well to have the convenience of using a nice Private Local Hospital BUT there are times when travelling to a major city outfit is the best way to go!

Caro,

I second that...the other thing about a VATS that I didn't realise beforehand is that it is a VERY complex anthaesthetic...gosh they put one of your lungs OUT OF ACTION & then have to reinflate it for goodness sake.! I didn't think about that until I was being wheeled into the pre-op room & the Anthaesthetist came in & told me so...I remember thinking, cripes mate, how long IS it since you've done one of these! oops too late!

LOTS n' LOTS of rest...that's an order from Kathie & I agree!
