Guest guest
Hi Carol, The length of hospital stay depends on if you had LAP RNY or OPEN. LAP(which I had) you're in the hospital 3 days (my surgery was on Friday, 7/18/03 and I went home on Monday, 7/21 at noon). Open is usually around 5 days, I believe. As for time off, it depends on what you do, but I have a desk job and I've been out 6 weeks so far and won't be going back until around 8 weeks. Don't fret, I wanted to be out this long. My doctor wants each patient out a minimum of 6 weeks, due to the fact you need to get use to your new system and your new eating habits. She's had patients go back 2 - 3 weeks after surgery only to be back to their old ways of eating and they have lots of problems. For me, I wanted the break from work. I have a high pressure job, which I love, but knowing I was having the surgery during the summer I said what the heck, enjoy the time off. It's the only time I'll have time off to myself without having a baby (I'm single with no kids). Just talk with your surgeon about what he/she recommends about taking time off. I'm sure they'll listen to your concerns and maybe you can compromise. A lot of people on this site don't stay out as long as I have. Again, it depends on your surgeon and your schedule. Good luck!! The doctor indicated I would be out of work for 2 weeks, the nurse indicated more like 4 to 6 weeks. So which is it? Can I get some feedback from you guys on your hospital length of stay and time off from work? I am a workaholic and I'll go crazy if it's 6 weeks....LOL > > Carol Matar > -------------------------- > Sent from my wireless handheld > > New to Group > > Hi everyone, my name is and I live in Fort Lauderdale, > Florida. I stayed in the hospital only 3 days the 25 to the 28 and had no complications. The hospital stay was relaxing except for the barium test and the methalyne blue ink test, and oops almost forgot when they removed my drain tubing that was freaky to say the least and it hurt a little too. Guest guest
Hi Carol, Assuming you are having the surgery done laproscopically, then you surgeon sounds more on target, but it also depends on what you do in your work. If you do a lot of physical work where you are lifting, etc., then it very well could be 4 to 6 weeks. Hope this helps Caroline Lap RNY 5/2/03 367/288/150 Photos and more: www.tinyurl.com/bkld > My doctor/nurse indicated that I would be out of the hospital the third day. Guest guest
I wanted to hit the gym too, but the dr said wait for the full six weeks. I also had an open. You have a more liberal dr sounds like. I was able to go back to work in three weeks, but wish i would have taken at least 4. If you can take more time, please do yourself and favor and take it. We just went thru major surgery, why rush it. No need to push your body. Just my opinion from my personal experience. Lori - MI Open RnY 8-1-03 -24lbs > I stayed for 3 days. Guest guest
I had an open prodedure and stayed 4 days. I am 90 miles away from the hospital and asked to stay the extra day or I would have been released at 3 days also. I went back to work at 3 weeks, i am a high school teacher. I know the other women that had surgery with me one got the go ahead at 4 weeks, but the other has been encouraged to wait the full 6 weeks. I will be honest with you. I didnt ask permission to go back. I had my procedure during the summer so i didnt use any sick time, so i didnt need to inform my employer about the procedure or when i could go back. Like i said in an earlier post, i wish i could have had one more week at home. It was a hard week and I am thankful for the 4 day weekend. I was very active after my surgery and drove myself home from my one week post op checkup. I also attended all my kids functions etc. You will be fine and you will keep busy too. Good luck to you and i look forward to reading more about your journey. Lori - MI Open RnY 8-1-03 -24lbs > My doctor/nurse indicated that I would be out of the hospital the third day. Guest guest
I was just walking and biking. I didn't start the weights actually until 2 months ago. Which was almost 2 months out from surgery. Mel Open Rny 5/2/2003 289/202/150 New to Group > > Hi everyone, my name is and I live in Fort Lauderdale, > Florida.
