Thanks to everyone wishing me well on the surgery .. I need to make

arrangements for a physical to be done within 30 days of surgery.. and get the

meningitis shot.. but the biggest task will be the airline tickets and the

accommodations, arrangements for the pets and being sure I get the bills paid on

time

prior to leaving for Seattle.. lol!

My mind is going a thousand miles an hour... I best slow down now.

night all and thank you again!

Awesome news Pam!

You should be back in the hearing world by Christmas.. What a great

gift you're giving yourself. The mixed feelings are perfectly

normal. I had them as I'm sure the majority of others did too.

Relax, you'll do great.

continued good wishes that everything goes smoothly for you.

Hugs,

Silly MI

Awww, Pam, you have your surgery date!!!! Wow, I am thrilled for you

that things are moving along for you now. Your emotions are

perfectly normal. Best wishes for a successful surgery and a smooth

recovery time! Looking forward to reading how it goes for you.

Pace yourself for a good week or two after the surgery. Let others

pamper you during those weeks.

Best of luck to you!

Pam,

Hoorah for you!! I'm so glad you have your surgery date all set. I

hope you have a huge party before you leave and a 2nd party when you

get back home again. Good luck for a speedy recovery and activation

day too!

Now they've told me that the surgeon has clinics half days and surgeries half

days. This is for the purpose of " keeping the surgeon fresh " . I'm glad to

hear that news. Apparently the OR was overscheduled and not the surgeon.

Pam (still scheduled at the end of a long day, I think.. but oh well, what's

a few pounds lost in exchange for my upcoming communication improvements?)

Interesting! Tell me more about Nextalk TTY software, ! Does the TTY

have to be connected to a computer? I have two phonelines which have private

line (for my hearing roomate who is on call constantly) and for my fax and

computer. I have to pull cords and plug in my TTY if I want to use it.

I'll write to Santa for that one! All my $$ has gone into out of pocket

expenses.. Double roundtrips and a week stay times 2 in Seattle has depleted my

savings!

24 hours? my surgery was last on surgery day, being 3 30 pm.... find out

if you can have early breakfast (more than 12 hours before surgery).

I am happy that you still can keep your date.

Thanks! I didn't know about the 12 hours before surgery. I thought it was

just NPO (nothing by mouth) after midnight. lol!

That helps a bit.

I'm done worrying now.. the crisis is over.. :-)

Hello I just received this e mail and am new to the group. My name is

and I live in New Jersey.

I am going through the process of the surgery for the implant. I think they

will take me sometime in January.

I am diabetic and worried about the 12 hours of fasting before surgery.

That seems like an awfully long time to not have any food or sugar in your

body and then the whole time of the surgery and waking up.

I think even people who are not diabetic would have a problem.

Let me know more if you can.

Yes! We'll plan on Tuesday late afternoon (5 or 6ish) dinner (unless they

change my surgery date to a day earlier). But we'll give you a call to confirm

(meaning my partner will talk to one of your daughters)and find out where to

meet. We won't have a car so hopefully there is a place right there in the

vicinity.

will make sure you will be ok,,, I know it is workable.

Good luck!

, I'm an RN and I agree with Alice. I'm sure your implant team will

work around your condition. They will be monitoring your blood sugars as well

as

the other usual things that are watched during implantation.

I've cared for very ill and brittle diabetics in the hospital who received

all their nourishment from IV fluids due to being sedated after intricate and

long surgical procedures. No one has mentioned this, but I'm assuming that an

IV is started for the implant surgery as well which would open a channel for

you to receive nourishment if needed. If IVs are not routine for the implant

surgery I would imagine it would be routine for a diabetic person.

I haven't worked as an RN for a few years so possibly things are different

now too. This is just my experience when I did work in a hospital.

This is definitely a priority for you to discuss with your surgeon and team.

Do you control your diabetes with insulin and diet? or diet alone?

Pam,

I sure cannot balme you. I would not like being at the tail end of a

long day in the OR. LOL

By the way, use relay service to read your answering machine. Only got

one phone lone? Use Nextalk TTY software and that will work.

Pam,

I'm sure this will be just fine although I'm sorry that this

happened to you. It sounds like a busy CI Center and that's a good

thing. Try to relax and I know that's hard as you are getting

closer to the surgery date. We're here for you.

Pam,

Its software, all you need. And free. You can make relay calls thru it

or call a TTY or you can contact other Nextalk users, its like instant

messaging. No pulling plugs to use it.

Hi Pam, Thankyou for the information, I take insulin for my diabetes and

have always had problems with low blood sugar no matter what I do.

On the high end of it I was in a coma but the lows really bother me and are

quite scary.

I never had to fast that long before so I discussed this with the surgeon on

Weds.

He sad he would take every precaution and I am comfortable with him.

I never had surgery before so it is pretty new to me.

I am 43 years old and have diabetes for ten years.

I also have celiac so all my medication I take orally is compounded.

I was worried about healing from the surgery.

On occasion I am a slow healer.

But I think the information you gave me is very helpful.

Thank you Gayle that is good to know. Now that I have heard from a few

others I feel better about going in.

I never had surgery before so a lot of this is new to me.

Hi ,

Welcome to the group and you're not to worry about the diabetes. I

too have diabetes and the doctor and anesthesiologist will make

certain your blood sugars are good. They will give you medications

if needed. I came through surgery with flying colors and absolutely

no diabetic complications and you'll do the same.

you will do just fine!

Dana,

What wonderful news!! Congratulations on your surgery date!! I can relate to

your feelings of everything being surreal. When I was told my surgery date I

was excited, but the reality of it didn't really hit me until my surgeon

told me how excited he was for me about how much a CI would improve my life.

Hang in there, Dana!! February 16th is just around the corner and will be

here before you know it!!

Dana,

How wonderful it was to read your message. Yes – sometimes it is a reality

check when we actually post this decision in black and white before what

seems to be the world. Congratulations on your approval for the CI and your

surgery date. There is no doubt in my mind that you have made one of the

best decisions you could have ever made for yourself. Just wait. Your life

is about to change and you will be treated to new horizons.

Please don’t hesitate to ask any questions that come to mind and remember –

we are here 24/7.

<After reading this list since June, it seems like a rite of passage to
