I am concerned because I am only two weeks post op and I am able to eat. I

am still sticking with mostly liquids, yogurts and soups but I have noticed a

definite increase in the amount of these that I can take in! I can drink a

lot of water also. I have a dry mouth and usually have something to sip on

all day. I ate almost a whole can of soup today when it has been lasting me

for 3 or 4 meals. I am eating considerably less than before but a lot in

comparison to what I hear of other post ops eating.

Being 8 months post-op I have to also agree that I can't eat that much

either. A half a sandwich with sips of water is it for a meal. I try not to

eat any bread since I don't see any real nutritional value in it. What I do

find is that it seems at times, I am always eating small amounts of food. It

really depends on what I am eating as to how much I can eat. Dr. R, I too am

interested in knowing if you can stretch out your new stomach...

Hey ,

Honey, that sure doesn't sound like a lot to me. One can of soup! You're

probably just healing. I can't really say since I'm still pre-op, but since

I am still pre-op, it sounds like you aren't eating a thing to me! Not to

worry.

Cheryl & Vickie,

Not sure how this will sound, I think I'm more post

op than both of you, but I can't eat as much as your

saying. Definatly not 2 pieces of bread with a

sandwich. I eat one slice, usually with a slice of

deli turkey and mustard, thats it. I do however have

a different view of bread than I use to, I use to have

a problem with bread - a love affair of sorts, now I

see no real need for it - other than if I didn't use

it, my hands would be messier!

Also, I do still sip at a drink when I eat, I do

mean sip, most times I don't even order a drink, just

water - even pre op I suffered from dry mouth, food

just doesn't seem to go down right if I don't have a

few sips with it. Maybe this is why I'm not able to

eat as much.

Would love to hear from Dr. R on the stomach

stretching aspects of this. I am able to drink more

water than anything else, assuming its going straight

thru me. Other liquids, juice, milk ect. I can't

drink as much of at one time.

How bout other post ops?

Hi Cheryl,

The only thing I can add is that I also have been able to eat more than I

thought I would be

able to. The funny thing is that some days I feel like I'm eating like a

pig all day and never satisfied for long. Today however, is just the

opposite. I had a lite lunch, seafood pasta salad (about four bites) a

small bread stick and a few small sections of melon. For dinner I had two

small slices of cheese with 5 crackers and I was stuffed. I've been sipping

water all day and evening but not hungry at all.

Weird, huh?

This is very interesting . So on your days that you can't eat as much,

you may eat a banana or half, is your appetite that way throughout the day,

with very small portions or do forget to eat? Is your hungry feelings the

same or different?

I am currently living vicariously through the all of the people that have

Just for the record, I am going through this too. Even

though I had the open procedure, I think a lot of the

post-op living is similar. I have also noticed that

somedays I seem to be able to eat a lot more and other

days I get full after 2 bites. I am also worried about

the fact that I seem to be able to tolerate sugar

better than I thought I would be able to. Old habits

die hard and I am a recovering chocoholic. I don't eat

it every day but I have eaten as much as a 1/2 of a

brownie without getting sick. I have not pushe it any

further because I am afraid I will get sick. Does

anyone know how much sugar (grams) it takes to cause

this " dumping " sydrome? I would like to be able to put

a little sugar in my ice tea but I am afraid!

Kathy,

I guess I am actually more like you in the eating

aspects. I too can not eat 2 peices of bread with a

sandwich. If I order a sandwich at a restaurant, I am

doing good to get down half of it. I try to steer

clear of breads also becasue they seem to fill me up

immediately, only to leave me starving again 30 min.

later. I also had a love affair with bread before my

surgery - but honestly, I don't miss it that much.

There are some things, however that I feel I can eat

more than my share of. The other night I went out for

chinese food with my mother and we ordered chow mein

to share. I ate about 1/3 of the order which I thought

was a lot (pre-op I would have eaten 2x as much) - but

I guess because we talked and ate slow, I was ablt to

get down more. I also HAVE to drink with my meals.

This was my biggest concern pre-op, but post-op - I

never seem to have a problem with it. I mostly drink

just water and maybe 8 ounces of Nes-tea a day. I have

become addicted to Nes-tea, I guess because it is

sweeted with fructose it does not make me sick. It is

however an extra 80 calories a day, but since I drink

NO juice, i figure I can get away with it!

Rae,

There is no doubt with me that I get full much faster than before surgery.

I had my surgery on June 14, 1999. I like the other girls that have posted

have days that I can eat more than others. I never know when it is going to

happen. For me it will usually last the whole day. Then, the next morning

I may wake up and not even be able to eat a 1/4 of a banana for breakfast.

There have been a few meals lately that my husband had the most worried look

on his face and I asked him what was the problem. He told me he was afraid

I was learning to eat around the surgery. I told him not to worry because I

probably wouldn't eat much the next day. I didn't! The point for me is

that even eating more that I thought I would be able to eat, I'm am not

eating 1/2 as much as I ate before surgery. Two sandwiches, chips and a

dessert was nothing. I have only eaten one whole sandwich at one sitting

since the surgery and it surprised the heck out of me because half a

sandwich is usually max. Now I find myself picking the bread off most

sandwiches, esp. around the crust. I can eat a lot of things I didn't think

I would ever eat again. My husband always said my stomach was cast iron. I

am careful with sweets. I try to avoid them because of my fear of dumping.

I pushed it a little this afternoon with some sherbet and got a mild taste

of what it might be like. NO FUN!!!. This is just my take on matters. I

have lost 42 pounds since my surgery and I know I could have never

accomplished that any other way.

Pat,

Your welcome ... I've lost 2 lbs a week this month until this past week

... but its probaby water weight ... I don't do the exercising you are

doing but my activity level as definitely increased ... I now park

farther away from my destination just so I have to walk a little further

.... brings a big smile out on Rudie when I do this .. he loves that I am

more agile than before surgery ...

I, too, am concerned... Can we stretch our new tummy's ... Does anyone

know ..

Nijuana,

I'm 2 months post-op... surgery on June 17. ... I've lost 30 lbs since

surgery and I lost 30 lbs before surgery .. I weighed 384 to begin with,

lost to 354, and now weight 324... I'm happy with my progress for the

most part .. I'd love to lose faster, but I'm satisfied.

In no way do I eat like I did before, nor do I eat like a normal person.

I am still losing, about 2 lbs a week .... Tonight I had 4 bites of

chicken, about six or seven bites of salad and a baked potato ... I

don't think that is what a normal person eats ..but it is more than I

expected to eat ..

I can tell you that in no way do I regret the surgery ... I am so much

better off now and I eat so much less ... and I want to keep it that

way... The surgery is a great tool and it has helped me tremendously...

for a huge charcoaled steak ... fast food is pretty taboo ... I still

eat some things .. but I eat more vegetables and fruit .. with a little

meat .. I still like my chicken .. love chicken...

Chicken fajita's are a favorite of mine ... Sweets are only sampled ..

never " pigged " out on.. I love my juices ...

Hope this helps...

Rae-

On the days I wake up and don't eat much, it seems to continue throughout

the day. Today was one of my not eating very much days. It would have been

fine, but I got really hot this afternoon and decided to have some sherbet.

As I wrote earlier that was a big mistake. It had 17 grams of sugar. I had

had small bits of it earlier in the week, but today I pushed it too far and

almost had a dumping episode.

I never forget to eat because my stomach still has a way of letting me know

I need to put a little food into it. It is a hard feeling to describe. It

is different from the way my stomach would growl before surgery. If you

have any questions, just ask away! Sometimes I don't post. But, when I

read something that I can relate to, I will answer. I read the posts

everyday. We are all here for you it you need questions answered.

Ok thanks Cheryl,

This is my concern. I know I am a big sweet eater now and I will have no

problem giving them up. I have killer cravings at those special times of the

month. I am working now to give things up. This will be a big great for me.

Thanks ,

I really feel good about this. I have never been more surer about doing

something like this. I am very confident this surgery for me. I have made

lists about back and forth whether to have this done....and I am doing it! I

am ready for the challenge and this tool will help me to regain control of

things. When I read everyone's posts, especially post ops and I try to put

myself in that place and I think about how I would handle things. I have

really learned a lot from this group and I love all the support that is here

Rae,

I think the 'results' of this surgery are going to be different for each of

us, but here's my .02cents worth. I had surgery in Jan. and for the first

month post op, I only ate a few bites at a time. The 'full' feeling came

that quickly. It took awhile for me to learn what 'hungry' felt like. But

that has returned for me and I find that I do get hungrier quicker than my

husband, for instance, because he eats a normal meal, but I only eat 1/3 on

one. I can't eat in the morning because I feel sick (dumping - I guess) if

I do. But around 11, I'll have around 6 oz. of something. I might snack on

something in-between lunch and dinner, but not usually. And remember that

it's not 'willpower' that keeps me from snacking or eating too much...it's

this tiny stomach. Dinner will be another 6 oz. (never more than 8oz.) And

that's it. Yesterday, for dinner I had 1/2 of a chicken breast and about

1/4c. of rice. I had a bite or two of green beans and I was FULL. I

couldn't eat anymore even tho' I had tons of chicken/rice and gravy, slaw,

green beans, a roll and apple pie and ice cream on my tray. (We eat at

church every Wed. night). On days when I feel like I've eaten one bite too

many, I really try to remind myself that I shouldn't do that. I don't want

to stretch my stomach or worse, cause it to leak. So, I consciously try to

be careful to stop as soon as I'm satisfied rather than stuffed. But I

never deprive myself. I eat when I'm hungry and I eat what appeals to me

and won't make me dump...(which isn't much). But I love not being a slave

to food cravings any longer. I love not inhaling my food out of starvation.

I think as I get further from my Jan. 4th surgery date, I'll be able to eat

more, but I'm hoping I don't stop losing until I get this last 50 pounds

off. Take care.
