Guest guest
A somewhat similar idea we started when was little: if she does something, you copy her. At times, for instance, would find her way under a table, and I'd join her. We still do this sort of thing with much laughter. It's really a way I can almost always connect with her if she's in a withdrawal period. We started out doing a lot of hand over hand but do so much less often now. Instead, will join me when I'm baking - she loves to break the eggs, sift flour, and finally after many years, to lick batter (she simply hated the texture for years). It's been a process to get her to this point. Martha
Guest guest
Of course this brings up the concept of hand under hand, where the learner's hands ride on top; it helps them " see " with their hands, is more respectful, and allows them to participate in the process more independently. It does take time getting the learner ready to tolerate, but is such a shift when it happens. Kim L > > A somewhat similar idea we started when was little: if she does > something, you copy her. Guest guest
Kim, I use hand under hand exclusively when working with the little guy I work with at school, it works and gives them the control. I really like that part of it. Weir Mom to Kennedy 6 yr old with CHARGE, 15, 13, and wife to Graeme New Brunswick, Canada http://ca.geocities.com/weirfamilyrogers lisaweir@... Guest guest
Shucks, I meant hand under hand. When this was explained to us in Springfield by national deafblind specialists, my husband and I were not allowed to be at 's school (long story, which is why we just finished with the federal court of appeals...) and I somehow got " hand over hand " in my head. It's a wonderful tool, but our local school district just assumed that the adults were doing everything and didn't have a clue what was going on...Martha
