Guest guest
There are some rare side effects with PTU usage during pregnancy, but the drug is generally safe at doses of 300 mg/day or less. And it's true that in the second half of pregnancy, the immune system stays suppressed, calming down the symptoms of GD. Also, changes in estrogen levels cause a decline in thyroid hormone levels. Patients on ATD's generally have a dosage reduction in the second half of pregnancy, and patients on replacement hormone generally have their dosages increases. I have a page on GD in pregnancy with some good links on my web site. Guest guest
hi all, i need help. trent, tiffany, trevor, and tyler are getting a little brother. lol. as of yesterday, i am at 20 weeks, which puts it at a few days before i started my PTU. while ya'll were talking about getting buddha bellies and adt weight gain, and my monthly preg tests were all coming back neg, i didnt think anything of not having a period. heck, they always came and went when they pleased. well, my doc called one day, poor thing was terrified, and said youre pregnant. i was 13 1/2 weeks!! my amnio results were in friday. all the little chromosones are where they belong except the boy thing. lol. (tiff says she is moving out)but, they are still making me go to the genetic spec. tomorrow to discuss the graves factor. in the last couple weeks, i have been to st louis more than i have in 2 years combined! between driving my father up there and myself, i need a frequent drivers plan. my need of help is: what kind of intellegent questions can i ask to get the most helpful info. i believe i could get better help from this board, but, they insist i go up there anyway. so, if anyobne can help... please do. thanks donna __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Hi Donna: Congratulations! I didn't develop gd until after my first pregnancy. I have had one more child since. (Two is enough for me!) Maybe I was just lucky, but I didn't have too many problems, except that my thyroid levels went berserk. I take synthroid, and we constantly had to change the dosage. However, I had forgotten about iron inhibiting the absoption of sythroid and was taking it at the same time I took my prenatal vitamin. So that really messed my up for a while. I didn't gain weight with my pregnancy, either. I lost weight until about the 8 month, although my belly was getting bigger and the baby was growing. I had a healthy little girl and the only complications were high blood pressure (which I had the first pregnancy) and post partum bleeding. This probably isn't much help, but it's my experience. Good luck and keep us posted! Guest guest
Beverly, I'm on synthroid as well, and I didn't know that iron inhibits its absorption. Sometimes I have low iron and take iron supplements. Is there a way to get around this? Donna, I had radioactive iodine and then went on synthroid right away, turned out to be the right dosage so we got pregnant four months after the radioactive iodine. I know that there are risks associated with PTU while pregnant, but I don't know what they are? Are you still taking it, or is it better to stop? I thought I heard that sometimes the thyroid will regulate itself when pregnant with Grave's sometimes, but I could be out to lunch. Anyone else hear this? Tricia > > Hi Donna: > > Congratulations! Guest guest
Hi Tricia: My endo said to just take them at different times of the day. If I took the prenatal vitamin in the morning, then I would take the synthroid at night. Just don't take them together, at the same time. Even now, I take a womens multivitamin, and just avoid taking it close to time for my synthroid. Guest guest
Donna, CONGRATS !!! I think the most important thing for you to make sure of is that the DO NOT ALLOW YOU TO GO HYPO AT ALL! But continue taking your PTU, I'm sure they will be cutting it down as you go along, get the right blood work, others can help you with that better than I... don't let them rely on just a TSH! *HUGZ* and Congrats to you and yours! Guest guest
Hi Donna Congratulations on your news. Already 20 weeks - the remainder will fly by. I guess you must have been a bit anxious about the amnio - glad all is going well. Elaine is right that PTU is considered the safer ATD under 300 mgs and you will experience changes in your dose as time goes on. As Jody said, it is crucial that you are not allowed to go hypo or hyper for that matter. Debbie had her last baby whilst on PTU without problems - you may wish to check the archives for posts about it. I am now 36 weeks and at around 18 weeks I was hypo for a couple of weeks and felt terrible. My dose of Thyroxine was increased and now all is going beautifully. I had a subtotal thyroidectomy in Oct last year and then feel pregnant immediately. My immune system is certainly depressed I had a cold about 8 weeks ago that took 2 weeks to get better and now have had another cold and sore throat for the last 10 days. But it is all part and parcel of being pregnant. I will be very interested in what the genectic specialist has to say. My Drs didn't even mention seeing one of those to me. I do know that the baby has an increased risk of thyroid functioning problems and of developing an auto immune disorder at some stage due to my GD and thyroid disfunction. All the best to you and your family. Stay in touch. Guest guest
HI Beverly Welcome to the group. Much to my surprise I also have lost weight during this pregnancy (now 36 weeks), and I'm on thyroxine after a subtotal thyroidectomy. Fortunately I've had no BP problems or anything like that. I would never had thought the pregnancy would have been the most successful diet I've been on for a while! Cheers Caroline Beverly Pope wrote: > Hi Donna: > > Congratulations! Guest guest
Hi Caroline: I jokingly tell my husband whenever I start getting down on myself about my weight that maybe I should get pregnant again. It was the most successful diet I've ever been on. I weighed the same at six weeks in the pregnancy, when I first found out and at my last dr appt before they induced (due to the bp problem). Needless to say, I don't recommend it, and my docs were freaking about it. I was continually being sent for ultrasounds to check the baby--which must have thrilled the insurance company. But this baby was bigger than my first one. She is almost 17 mos old and I am still fluctuating around trying to get my synthroid dose right again. With all the trouble I had keeping my synthroid dosage right, we decided this would be the last baby, which is a shame because the delivery was incredibly easy. Good luck with the baby and keep me posted. need advice from GDer's who have been pregnant. hi all, i need help. trent, tiffany, trevor, and tyler are getting a little brother. lol. as of yesterday, i am at 20 weeks, which puts it at a few days before i started my PTU. while ya'll were talking about getting buddha bellies and adt weight gain, and my monthly preg tests were all coming back neg, i didnt think anything of not having a period. heck, they always came and went when they pleased. well, my doc called one day, poor thing was terrified, and said youre pregnant. i was 13 1/2 weeks!! my amnio results were in friday. all the little chromosones are where they belong except the boy thing. lol. Guest guest
Hi Donna, Congratulations! I was on 600 mg. of PTU to start but had become pregnant on the TAP. They gave me the PTU because it is has the least effect on the fetus. By the end of my pregnancy I was at either 50 or 100 mg. of PTU, I am sure it was 50 mg. There were other complications unrelated to the GD, but otherwise I had a beutiful baby boy that scored a 9 apgar score which I was told was excellent. Also, I had just turned 40. If I could I would have another in a minute. They say life begins at 40, well I guess mine did. My oldest I had at 29 and the next I was 31, so I had a late start anyways. I've found that I have alot more patience, my youngest had colic and it never bothered me. Seeing how he suffered was the hardest, it brought tears to our eyes. He brings us lots of joy and smiles. And he is so cute. I stopped at my friends greenhouse Friday, he went back to the van and retrieved a penny. He went in and said, " Gracie, I want to buy my Mommy a flower " and held out the penny. She let him buy me a flower for a penny. Debbie R.
Guest guest
Hi Donna, great to hear the amnio went well. Boys are okay especially since I am having one too!! I wasn't sent to a genetic spec. but have going to a perinatologist since diagnosed with my pregnancy. Have you been seeing one also? You could ask if not due to your age and GD status, these put you at what they call high risk. As far as the geneticist goes, I am not entirely sure what he might be looking at at this point. Since you are already at 20 weeks and the amnio was fine I am not sure what further dealving might be needed. I have genetic backround prior to my nursing degree and am thinking hard about this one. AS far as the GD relationship he might just be looking into your family history for other thyroid related problems or other autoimmune problems. But there isn't a particular marker that is known for these problems at this time. Most of the other important markers such cystic fibrosis should have been done already. As far as I know there is no conclusive evidence to support GD actually causing genetic abnormalities. The ATD's have been shown in several studies to be safe for the fetus up to 300 mgs a day with only affects on the thyroid levels not the physical makeup of the baby. I am curious what he might cover with you. Let me know .. In the meantime just make sure your endo and OB have your thyroid levels in the upper normal range to maintain a proper level in the baby's circulating blood. They should have you at the lowest possible dose of ATD to keep you in this range without sacrificing your thyroid status. Hope this is of some help.... Best wishes! Guest guest
Ditto from me Jody and Donna. My endo and OB don't give a hoot about the TSH (can you believe I found someone with common sense!). Most important keep your thyroid levels in the upper normal range with the lowest possible dose of PTU. But don't be overly alarmed since up to 300 mgs a day is safe before there is even slightly harm on the baby. Even then the baby is born minimally hypo until a few days after birth. I was made hypo with my last and it was horrible with the unknown bleeding and preterm labor and delivery. I don't know enough then but feel so much better having my thyroid levels is better range for this baby. I. RE: need advice from GDer's who have been pregnant. > Donna, > CONGRATS !!! Guest guest
Oh Caroline I am so jealous of you. Pregnancy a diet, I wish. But this time at 30 weeks I am at 15 lbs weight gain so far. I might gain at the most 20 lbs. My other pregnancies were 25-35 lbs. I feel though it is because of the 30 lb weight gain two years ago from being made hypo on the ADT's my body knows it only needs enough for the baby to grow well. I already have the fat stores for the breast feeding. Only a few more weeks for you, I am excited for you. I have been put on extremely limited activity just short of permanent bed rest. I have had a run of contractions in the past week without dilation though, and they don't put GD patients on brethine because it can cause severe tachy. I don't need that too. So I am listening. Hubby is home for the summer now (a teacher) so he does most of the work around here. He is just super! Hang in there... He assures me that the baby is the right size and all is going well its' growth. I have only had the usual ultrasounds (2, one to check for risk of Downs Syndrome and one at 20 weeks). Many of my family and friends have said to me that this pregnancy has certainly agreed with me. Since my meds were increased at about 18 weeks I haven't felt better (apart from 2 colds). It has made me realise just how sick I was prior to my thyroid and GD diagnosis and treatment. My BP is better than it has been in years (even now at 37 weeks)!! I'm praying for an easy delivery also and I hope I can remain stable after the baby is born. By the way, a few weeks ago my Dr advised me to drink Rasberry Leaf tea to make the labour easier and qucker. I meant to ask him how it works and I keep forgetting. Does anyone out there know???? Of course I have been drinking it, anything for the promise of an easier labour!!!!! Cheers Caroline Beverly Pope wrote: > Hi Caroline: > > > > I jokingly tell my husband whenever I start getting down on myself about my > weight that maybe I should get pregnant again. Guest guest
Hi You are doing really well. I can't imagine what it is like to be on bed rest or close to it all the time. Lucky it is the summer break. Your husband will be home for awhile I guess. In Australia they have 6 weeks off over summer. I hope the contractions ease off a bit. How are your blood tests going? Isn't it wonderful to feel the baby moving and no matter what it is you are going through that little life is happily growing inside you - makes it all worth it. Take care - God bless, I'm thinking about you Caroline {USER_FIRSTNAME} {USER_LASTNAME} wrote: > Oh Caroline I am so jealous of you. Pregnancy a diet, I wish. Guest guest
Don't let me panic you, but the use of Raspberry leaf tea is a bit controversial I think as it can cause uterine stimulation and thus early labour or miscarriage. There seemed to be conflicting reports on it on the quick internet search I just did - some say it is great for labour, others say it's too dangerous if you are at all at risk of early labour or miscarriage... but I remember from years ago that it was something they used to warn women away from if they were pregnant, particularly in the earlier months. Just thought I'd mention it. Guest guest
While you do need to check out the raspberry tea I've heard it's still effective even when only taken in the ninth month, or even during labor though you'd need to find out the proper preperation - for labor I think it's a bit stronger. Good luck and stay well, Fay ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Juno offers FREE or PREMIUM Internet access for less! Join Juno today! Guest guest
Hi Caroline, I don't know alot about herbs, but I drank Red Raspberry tea when I was pregnant the last time. A friend of mine has a bulk food store and she is into herbs. She is also pregnant for the 10th time and has a midwife come to the house. The raspberry tea is suppose to relax the uterus, it also is good for morning sickness. I drank alot of it the last time I was pregnant. Wow, it sure is getting close to the time. You must be so excited! I pray all goes well and you have an easy labor. Debbie R.
Guest guest
And 2 people have looked at my resume. Eunice Re: need advice from GDer's who have been pregnant. Hi Caroline, I am writing this about the raspberry leaf tea out of my herb book " The Green Pharmacy " , by A Duke, Ph. D. " I am sold on raspberry for complaints of pregnancy. One study identified a chemcal in raspberry that relaxes the uterus. For centuries, women prone to miscarriage have been urged to drink raspberry leaf tea throughout their pregnancy to help them carry the baby to term. The herb is also reportedly useful in preventing many of the discomforts of pregnancy, including morning sickness. " " The Herbal Drugstore " , A White, M.D., and the staff of Herbs for Health Red Raspberry " The leaves of this berry-producig vine are an important remedy for most conditions involving the uterus. They can help relieve pain and excessive bleeding. Caution: Consult a qualified practitioner to use red raspberry during pregnancy. " Like I said before Caroline, I did drink the red raspberry tea during my last pregnancy. It was one I liked that I could drink.
