What is required for the job, ability to manage or ability to see

patients, or both?

If they are expected to do patient care I would not pay them the same,

and would expect the PT to be paid more.

In your scenario base on dual duties I would venture to guess 45-50K

Would anyone be willing to share with me their rates (either privately

or to the group) for an outpatient clinic director. The particular

person we are looking at is a P.T.A. who has 15+ years experience as a

P.T.A., with 5-7 of those years in management. It is a small clinic

with approximately 6 employees. Would pay be the same as a P.T.

director? I appreciate any responses. Thanks!

Speaking as a PTA with 17 years experience also a masters in Rehabilitation

Counseling CRC, 7 years in management. I have just become a site manager of

an outpatient clinic and the range I was presented with at offer to hire was

$63,000 to $68,000. I don't know how that compares to a PT Director. Hope

that helps.

I was thinking the same thing Joe. I was also interested as to what experiences

folks might have in a case such as this where a manager/director is a PTA and

thus supervising PTs when in the clinical setting the PT would then be

supervising the PTA who is their boss. Any challenges with these dynamics? Just

curious.

Are you kidding me? It is a management position which is completely independent

of treatment and legal considerations. In fact, you will find a high percentage

of sports medicine clinics are managed by certified athletic trainers. Their

experiences gained through training room management and constantly interacting

with physicians makes them much more qualified in management and leadership

roles than most PT's.

Sorry you feel that way. Of course there are PT's on site. I have 3 FT

PT's, 1/2 PT, 2 OT, 1 SLP, Rehab aide.

The dynamics have worked very well here and I'm please that my organization

was open to recognizing my leadership, dedication, marketing and my vision.

As far as performing reviews, there are set criteria, job descriptions, etc.

As a PTA, who better to know if a PT has clearly set functional goals and

clearly stated pt status. We also use senior level roles for Peer review.

How do you perform reviews for other disciplines?

My staff have clearly stated that they are thrilled to have a manager that

listens, and responds to them. They have been thrilled with the depth of

their reviews. I believe my Counseling/Administration MEd and prior work

experience has prepared me well for this role.

Re: clinic director rates

Why would u hire a PTA as clinical director and do u have a PT on premises?

As a PT I would feel very uncomfortable working with an assistant as the

director.

I believe a Clinic Manager should be hired based on managerial

experience and expertise and not solely on clinical experience. Your

best PT may not be your best Manager - a well-qualified manager,

regardless of clinical background will be able to deal with the day-day

non-clinical aspects of the job and utilize the experience and skills of

the therapists he/she supervises when developing programs, assessing

competency, etc. Suggesting that a PTA may not be sufficiently

qualified to supervise PT's, in my opinion would be the same as

suggesting that a OT, SLP or RN may not be appropriate to supervise

PT's.

I did not realize is was possible to have a management position completely

independent of treatment and legal considerations, does this position simply

involve " pushing paper " ? Could'nt an office manager perform those duties?

Before I entered a management role I had fantasies that managemnt was no

more complex that that. Now I realize how silly that was.

I guess I would agree that if there were such a position it would be

appropriate. I manage a small clinic and the issues seem permanently

intertwined to me. I do realize that in a larger organization this may not

be the case.

Also I would like to add that I believe your last statement regarding " most

PT's " is wrong, and I hope I am not wrong on that one.
