Guest guest
I love peppermint ice cream too!! Also, peppermint bark -- dark chocolate on the bottom, then white chocolate, then crushed peppermint candy! YUM! Yeah, chocolate mint is probably my #1 absolute favorite flavor combination (Junior mints, York peppermint patties, York peppermint patty Klondike bars, etc. etc.) ~Jen S.See what's new at AOL.com and Make AOL Your Homepage. I just got a tub of it yesterday at the grocery store! yum yum It reminds me of when I was a kid cause they used to sell peppermint ice cream by the cone and that was the kind I always got. Guest guest
Pecan pie. I had this one sister in law who constantly talked about dieting. she could relate anythign to dieting - and did. She'd sit there at Thanksgiving and spout calorie counts for everything - or how long she would have to 'work out' to make up for what she was eating -and she would very kindly do this for all of us, too - tell us how uch we would have to work out to make up... Pecan pie was the worst. She actually tell us all how many calories were in each bite...... I always had a small piece of pumpkin and pecan but I would ahve enjoyed it a whole lot more without the narration or the guilt. This reminds of the Christmas I didn't eat *anything* good. I was on one of my many, semi-starvation diets -and I was soo proud of myself for resisting all the pies and cookies and anything else good. After it was over though, I couldn't stop thinking of allt he ethings I'd 'missed' - so over the next week or so I bought or made everythign I didn't have at christmas - and ate most of it all myself - several times as much of it as I would have if I'd had it Christmas -- In IntuitiveEating_Support , Kipkabob wrote: > > My favourite has got to be the candy cane ice cream!!! Guest guest
I have just finished my Halloween 'tradition' - candy corn. This year I got a small bag, ate it as 'mindlessly' as I wanted and enjoyed it for what it was - a ONCE a year 'treat' that I will be happy to not eat any more of until next Halloween. And as we are pretty much non-traditionalist in this home, we have already made a turkey and with it a favorite of ours - pumpkin pie. I made topped it with REAL home whipped cream laced with powdered sugar and vanilla extract too. I make the pie with honey & molasses plus EXTRA spices so that taste really compliments the whipped cream. Fat the scales! I know that this 'indulgence' it would NOT be a good time to even think about seeing what I weigh. But with IE I know that will balance out as I go forth with my 'normal' eating. Fabulous Festivites one and all - ehugs, Katcha > > what is your favorite holiday treat that you are so glad to finally have > guilt-free this year? One of the things I've 'discovered' in recent years si that I don't particularly like turkey, so I don't mind having it once a year. Now that I'm in the US, that once will be thanksgiving. Last year we had a goose on Chistmas - everyone liked it and it gave me lots of good goose fat for cooking with all year - and it's very expensive stuff if you just buy it. We've been having lots of things with pumpkin - scones, muffins and pancakes - but no pies yet We also have a lot of cream in our house (real- I wouldn't use anything else). I use it pretty much every day, whipped or unwhipped. I use it in scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, poured over fruit, souffles, cakes and pies, make it into chocolate mousse, or just in my morning oatmeal. Guest guest
All this mention of peppermint ice cream has me smiling - I HATE it, not only because I find peppermint too strong a mint for my tastes (do like wintergreen), but also because when we were kids, my brother used to select it when it was his turn to pick as much because I didn't like it as because he did. (He got more that way - lol, typical sibling games) I do like pumpkin pie ice cream, but can only enjoy about 1 or 2 tastes before I find it over whelming and don't want more until next year. :) Katcha > > I just bought some Peppermint Stick ice cream at www.Schwans.com (home delivery service). Guest guest
oh my, pecan pie is so good! hope you enjoy it this year! i hate when people talk about dieting on the holidays. i try to stay away from the people who do; they just ruin the experience. holidays should be about gathering and celebrating with the people you love, not about watching people binge and talk about their next diet...i mean really, how sad is that??anyway, when people start talking about how something has so many calories, i usually say something like, "yeah, so you don't need quite as much....you can be content with the amount that fills YOU up." or when someone says something is so bad for you and makes you gain weight, i usually say, "only if you're greedy and you eat more than your share." i know my comebacks are a little rude, but they get people to shut up and stop talking about dieting, and really, i'm just over the dieting talk these days. if i humor the people, they will continue to talk about dieting, and i really don't wanna hear it..:)iv_adb wrote: Pecan pie. Okay, as a non-American I already find it hard enough to imagine what on earth pumpkin pie would taste like, but now you tell me there's such a thing as pumpkin pie ice cream? :-D (Katcha, babe, I gotta admit I'm also a *teensy* freaked by your emphasis on using REAL whipped cream. Um, like that's something most people wouldn't do? Pray tell, what is in NONREAL whipped cream ... or don't I want to know? LOL) Anyway, my " holiday " treats (which I guess is Christmas, since we don't do Thanksgiving here) is the special German-style spiced biscuits (you'd call them cookies) like Zimtsterne and Spekulatius, and jam- filled lebkuchen (choc-coated gingerbread hearts) which you can only buy here in November/December, so you know the festive season is coming around. We all hail the joyful arrival of the first shipment of European Christmas goodies at our favourite delicatessen! And my Mum bakes the best Linzer Leckerli (thin butter biscuits sandwiched together with redcurrant jelly) and hazelnut macaroons and other traditional German festive treats. Love Christmas baking (even though it's often so hot here in December you don't always feel like baking or eating very much). Peace all! Pumpkin pie, pumpkin pound cake and pumpkin ice cream all have the same basic 'taste', just different 'textures and ways' to deliver that taste. Hard as it will be for your to imagine this - the taste is pumpkin sweetened with spices - cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and I add allspice and cloves too. I also 'enrich' the taste from just 'sweet' by using honey and rum extract instead of brown sugar and vanilla extract. (are your taste buds screaming yet?!? Guest guest
I used to eat cool whip as if it were ice cream. My Mom would only buy ice milk when I was a kid (yuck! Not nearly as good as the real stuff!). But she always seemed to have cool whip stored in the freezer for those needed occasions. I used to sneak and eat right out of the container. And then when she went to get some, most of it would be gone and she would be mad. Used to do the same thing with chocolate chips. Since starting IE in May and since I've become a Food Network junkie, and have made my own whipped cream, I can't go back. The thought of buying that fake whipped cream makes me sick to just think about it. All this talk of pumpkin pie and real whipped cream, I can't wait until next week. I also liked the comment (can't remember who said it) that it always tastes better when you make it yourself. Guest guest
>what is your favorite holiday treat that you are so glad to finally have guilt-free this year? A holiday tradition that my Mom did every year was make Pecan Brittle. After watching the Food Network I have learned that is actually a Pecan Prailine (because it has butter - I guess brittle is just the sugar without the butter). But it is to die for! This year I am looking forward to making it knowing that I can have it when I want it and that I don't need to go overboard with it. In previous years I have eaten so much of it I have been so sick from it. Other years I have avoided making it because I didn't want that to happen. This year, there are no fears. I will make it, give some of it away as I always do, and enjoy in moderation. I can't wait!

If there is ANYTHING that can be made in a lousier, fake version the US 'food' producers have found it.... and the average diet obsessed consumer in this coutnry will buy it and think it's just dandy...so much better than the real thing . We don't even bother with supermarkets here - they just don't have a lot of food in them Actually when we moved here, we went to a grocery store and I actually cried. There was just no real food - and I didn't know what I was goign to feed my family. I wanted to get right back on the plane. Guest guest
Mmm I spent my junior year of highschool over in Germany. Definetely loved loved loved the Christmas goodies! So GOOD! Lebkuchen is my favorite (definetely typed " ist " at first, haha). I'm excited for the Holiday season- its so much fun. I'm really excited about winter activities too, like running in the cold. I know that sounds weird, but its so refreshing!
Guest guest
Pecan pie, pecan pie, pecan pie! Hands down the best thing about the holidays!! In fact I'll be baking one this weekend. I'm lucky normally because I have a VERY large pecan tree in my backyard, but we had a record drought this year and the tree didn't fruit. So I'll have to buy them, and they're wildly expensive right now. Oh well. I could literally BUY a Mrs. 's pecan pie for what the pecans themselves will cost me to make it homemade, but Mrs. ain't got NUTHIN' on my mother's pecan pie recipe! Guest guest
My aunt makes the most AMAZING pumpkin crunch cake every year. She's the baker of the family, haha. It's two layers of pumpkin cake with chopped pecans and homemade whipped cream in between, with more whipped cream smothered over the top. it is BEYOND delicious. i always make sure to leave room for it on thanksgiving!
