Guest guest
What is a sugar manager? If you are a diabetic, it would be best for you to eliminate all candy, cakes and pies and cookies from your diet. They are made from refined carbohydrates, and this will cause your glucose level to sky rocket to way too high. Remember it is those very high glucose levels above 160 that are at the root of practically all diabetic complications. how much can I have of the sweet stuff using a sugar manager! > > I am wondering, as the subject indicates, if I can have that small piece > of pie or say a couple of sweet cookies, or such, each day if I manage to > keep my sugars down by taking say, some Metformen, or the like? Guest guest
Ken, If you multiply 6.8 times 18, you come up with the American equivalent and 6.8 is really too high a blood sugar. Keeping it around 5.0 is much better for you. If you eat sweets, even with a 5 A1C, you will not stay that way very long. Are you on insulin? If not, eating sweets will raise your sugar high and it will take a long time for a type 2 to get it down. Right, Harry? Re: how much can I have of the sweet stuff using a sugar manager! Guest guest
Ken, Any thing such as pie or cookies is going to raise your blood sugar. You c an test it out by doing a blood sugar (BG) and 2 hours after eating 2 cookies do another BG. You will see what it does to your BG. I think you will find it not a good thing. You really need to keep our BG around the 5.0-5.5 level in order to prevent gradual complications from happening. Eating sweet things every day will not enable you to do that; but it is your decision. how much can I have of the sweet stuff using a sugar manager! Guest guest
Ken, I know exactly what you mean. You, like I, have a sweet tooth. You can have all the sweets you like, provided you are willing to accept the consequences for that indulgence. Before I became an insulin dependent diabetic after three heart attacks and two heart by-pass surgeries and finally for the past few years suffering with impotence, without a doubt I can say that satisfying that sweet tooth can cost you all of the complications mentioned here. I always satisfied my sweet tooth with the blessings of the doctors, since my A1C's for more than 15 years always ran below 6.0. I had these complications due to ignorance on the part of the doctor and also on my part. I am not going to let you be ignorant today, since the research and technology for the past five or ten years tells a completely different story, and even today some of the doctors are learning that high blood sugars are the primary culprit for diabetic complications. You need to understand the process of glycation, which happens to all individuals whether diabetic or not. It is a topic we can address in other messages, if you like. I assume you are talking about the mole measurement system used in the UK. If you average 6.8 on this glucose measurement as an average over time, your A1C will also be 6.8, which is well above 6.0, where I developed all the complications I have mentioned that happened to me. To convert mole measurements to the USA glucose measurements just multiply the mole number by 18 or visa versa divide the USA glucose measurement by the same number 18. A mole of 6.8 is equivalent to a USA measure of 122, which is not good as an overall average at all. To avoid diabetic complications you would be well advised to run as close as possible to what the average A1C's of a non-diabetic would be. The average range for a non-diabetic would be between 4.2-5.2, and I would doubt your physician even knows this range. Most doctors are told or learn that it is just fine for the diabetic to run moles or A1C's at 7.0 or lower and the patient will be just fine. However this is not true. I prefer to teach prevention of complications rather than the treatment of complications that are sure to come at high sugar levels. Diabetic complications are rare in diabetics who run an A1C of 5.5 or lower. This would be the same in UK mole measurements or in USA measures a daily glucose level of 99 or less. This is a fact. Refined carbohydrates are like a poison for the diabetic and pre-diabetic. As smoking cigarettes is a very dangerous thing for a person to do, it is likewise dangerous for the diabetic to mess around with refined carbs like sugar, flour and fruit juices just to mention a few of them. There are some on this list serve who even went completely blind as a result of running 6.8 and lower. You are getting this message from a person who can be said to be without a doubt a sugar and tobacco adict, who now abstains from these indulgences, which I still crave from time to time on a daily basis. how much can I have of the sweet stuff using a > sugar manager! > > > > > > I am wondering, as the subject indicates, if I can have that small > piece > > of pie or say a couple of sweet cookies, or such, each day if I manage > to > > keep my sugars down by taking say, some Metformen, or the like? Guest guest
Having written the message at the bottom of this one, I confess that from time to time I indulge in refined sugar like a piece of pie, a bowl of ice cream and a piece of cake or even a piece of candy, but this is done sparingly and usually on special occasions like birthday parties. I use a fast acting insulin like Humalog to bring my glucose level within range, but the more carbs one consumes the more difficult it is to dose properly to maintain strict glucose control. If one does not use fast acting insulin, I would imagine it is more difficult to keep those glucose levels from spiking in the high unacceptable range. Now whenever I get a craving for sweets, I use sugar free jello, nuts or pork rinds to deal with those sugar cravings, even though they are not sweet or as satisfying as a big fat Butter Finger, a Milky Way or a bag of M & M's would be. With practice and repeated failures I have learned it is just not worth the effort and abuse to eat sweets and try to go through the one or two days of messed up glucose levels to get them back in strict control again. If you do not use fast acting insulin, it may take even longer to get those sugar levels back in the normal range again. how much can I have of the sweet stuff using >> a >> sugar manager! >> >> >> > >> > I am wondering, as the subject indicates, if I can have that small >> piece >> > of pie or say a couple of sweet cookies, or such, each day if I manage >> to >> > keep my sugars down by taking say, some Metformen, or the like? Guest guest
Hi ; If I can keep my sugar levels down around about say, 6.0, would that allow me to indulge in a cookie or two each day? I want to do what's best and at the same time, I want to do right for my health and as you can see, I'm just trying to clarify my understanding re how to do this or that in general. Guest guest
Harry, does this apply for a brittle diabetic also? is it possible to get total control for such a person? yesterday afternoon I was two point three, before supper four point six, before bed seven point three, and woke this morning at twenty point six. I did not think I did anything different other than I have not been feeling well. both my and i husband have had a bug of some sort which we are finding very difficult to shake . I aim for five but still get some surprises like this. I know not feeling well can throw it off and I really do work at avoiding the highs and the lows. any comments, thanks, from Canada how much can I have of the sweet stuff using >> a >> sugar manager! >> >> >> > >> > I am wondering, as the subject indicates, if I can have that small >> piece >> > of pie or say a couple of sweet cookies, or such, each day if I manage >> to >> > keep my sugars down by taking say, some Metformen, or the like? Guest guest
, if you are taking iron because you are anemic, your A1C may actually be lower than what it actually is. It has been proven that anemic people people measure a lower A1C because other is not enough red blood cells to hold glucose, so your measurement is off. My friend was dialysis and her endo and nephrologists told her this as she was so anemic from the dialysis that her A1C's were 4.2., but her blood sugars did not warrant that low an A1C. After they started giving her a certain med for the anemia and her red blood cell count up, so did her A1C. Re: how much can I have of the sweet stuff using a sugar manager! Guest guest
, if you are not feeling, well, it could very well make your BG go up. Also, I had an experience the other night. Before bed my BG was about 8.0 (estimate as I cannot do 18 times something too accurately in my head!), woke up at 1:30 and it was 5.0 and got up 6:30 and it was 18! I apparently went into reaction after 1:30 AM and my body put out a load of glucagons to raise the blood sugar. It is called a rebound reaction and took me half the day to get it back down to normal. Very frustrating. Re: how much can I have of the sweet stuff using a sugar manager!
