My 3 yr old son has chronic hepatitis due to his mito disease. He has never spat up blood and his bowel movements are not yellow, nor is his abdomen bloated. Almost 2 yrs ago he was very sick from the rotavirus(before he was diagnosed with mito) and blood tests as an inpatient revealed high ammonia and liver enzymes. These continue to be moderately high to this day. We just saw our mito specialist last week, Dr Kelley, and he said that although the mitochondria in 's liver are clearly abnormal (he had a liver biopsy in April) they are still getting the job done. >For those who give their children vitamin cocktails via mouth: >How do you get them to take the vitamin cocktails? >I have tried ice cream, applesauce, yogurt, pineapple, cranberry sauce, and >fluids? >Any ideas how to administer the cocktail? I tried for over a year to give his various supplements and meds by mouth and it was very difficult and frustrating. He always knew when they were hidden in his food. Juice worked for a while and then he caught on. We had a g-tube placed in October for supplemental nutrition and for the administration of meds. We agonized over the decision but are now so glad we did it and wish we had done it sooner. He is, finally, getting all of his supplements and we hope it makes a difference, especially in regards to his liver. Sorry I am no help here but I can relate to your current situation. I often wondered how other people did it when we had such a hard time with it. Good luck! Connie

Guest guest
Hello jimmyjan@... (Jim and Janice), In reference to your comment: è My problem is constipation. I am feeling very bloated. è I did read that this is common during the induction è period. Does it get better as you can add a few more è carbs in the form of more veggies? And, what can I do è about it now? Just get a laxative from the drug store? Flax seed, seems to work quite well i've heard... I don't have that problem. Fibercon tablets i've heard also work... you don't want a laxative, you want a fiber or bulking agent. ========Original Message======== Subj: Questions Date: 10/5/01 10:38:05 PM Eastern Daylight Time From: jimmyjan@... (Jim and Janice) Reply-to: diabetes_int To: diabetes_int Hello everyone. My mailbox wasjust too full to catch up on all the posts, so I had to delete and start fresh. Hope I didn't miss too much. A couple things...I did manage to get Dr. Bernstein's book from the library...very informative. I also picked up Dr. Atkin's book, doing a little comparison since several of you here seem to be using his diet as well. I started on Tuesday and have been doing well...and it's true...I really haven't been hungry between meals like I was when I did the high carb, low fat thing. We even took the kids out for supper tonight and it was ok. I got steak and mushrooms and ordered a small caesar side salad instead of the potatoes. My sugar before supper was 6.8 and one hour after was only 6.9. I still have more to read, and a lot to learn. My problem is constipation. I am feeling very bloated. I did read that this is common during the induction period. Does it get better as you can add a few more carbs in the form of more veggies? And, what can I do about it now? Just get a laxative from the drug store? What about nutritional supplements? I may have asked this before. I can't afford to buy a whole lot of them, so what is most important. I am thinking a good multi-vitamin and calcium. I think Bernstein mentioned something about vitamin E? Have to get back to the books. I've been real busy this week getting ready for 21 people coming over for Thanksgiving dinner this weekend (I am in Canada). Speaking of that, could someone please post the " fauxtatoes " recipe again? The cauliflower with cream cheese. Sounded good but I didn't print it, and any other suggestions about how to handle Thanksgiving. Thanks for all your help. This is a great list. Sounded good but I didn't print it, and any other suggestions about how to handle Thanksgiving. >> Really nothing to it. I use a bag of frozen cauliflower...for 21 people you'd probably need four or five bags...just steam it till the cauliflower is nice and soft...throw it in food processor with some cream cheese --I don't measure, just toss it in about an ounce at a time, till it's just the right consistency --...season to taste. That's it. Of course, if you're making it for that many people you'll have to do it in batches...unless you have a REALLY big food processor, smile... Guest guest
No, do not take laxatives. Go to the health food store and buy " psyllium " , mix with water, drink, then chase with another glass of water. Psyllium is the active ingredient of Metamusil, Konsoyl and some of the other expensive fiber stuff. Be sure and drink 8 glasses of water a day. If I remember, Psyllium was cheap. There is no flavor just the gritty beverage to drink. Psyllium creates bulk in the diet and needs lots of water or it will have the opposite effect. Calcium and multivitamin will help when on a strict diet that does not include variety of food. Word of caution regarding Vitamin E. It will raise blood pressure in some people. Women on hormones are able to take higher dose than others due to the hormone destroying part of the vitamin E. Check with your doctor about taking Vitamin E and the dosage. Marie Does it get better as you can add a few more carbs in the form of more veggies? And, what can I do about it now? Just get a laxative from the drug store? What about nutritional supplements? Guest guest
--- A friend of mine is having that problem but it is more related to the medication and her doctor reccommended stool softners. It can also be caused by the new way of eating and will pass as the body adjusts to it. madge In diabetes_int@y..., GayRghts@a... wrote: > Hello jimmyjan@s... Guest guest
--- Can also use fresh cauliflower, that's what I have been doing. Also there are a lot of variations that can be used. One used the cream cheese with cheddar cheese and sour cream and bacon. I added the bacon to mine, it was good!!! Anything you could or would do with potatoes seems to work with the cauliflower as well. We have been going on with this in another group also since I mentioned this after reading Vicki's post on it. Big hit over there too!!!! Vicki you hit a goldmine with this one!!!! Just DON'T use a hand mixer!!!!!!!!! A hand masher will work ok if you don't have a processor.
