So far as non compliance is concerned just look at how many people smoke

despite the well documented fact that smoking is very bad for one's

health...

The vast majority of folks want what they want and they want it now.

Consequences are for tomorrow, not today.

Re: Fw: Prayers for Wayne Kerstetter

The doctors will not make a change in their prescribing behavior and

follow-up care unless they start paying a high price for their

incompetence and negligence, and only a lawyer can make them pay

attention. Enough is known about diabetes today to practically prevent

the onset of diabetic complications, and if lawyers knew this as well as

you and I know this, then the patients with diabetic complications and

lawyers in the future would extract a high dollar figure for the

doctor's malpractice. Of course if the patient with diabetes is

noncompliant, then the doctor cannot be blamed. I am sure patients will

still have diabetic complications as long as the doctors do not get

up-to-date on their medical journals and research. Ten or twenty years

ago diabetic complications could be blamed on medical lack of knowledge

and technology, but this is not the case today. Today it would be

unconscionable for diabetics to develop diabetic complications with

proper medical care and medical treatment. I, too, am astounded at the

number of diabetics that I encounter who report to me that their A1C is

around 7.0, and this is just fine with their treating physician. When I

try to enlighten them regarding what a normal A1D is and what is

required to achieve this, they look at me with puzzlement and disdain.

They seem to think who do you think you are. I don't believe a word you

are saying, after all my doctor is quite pleased with my present state

and condition, and I am paying him for his advice. so it must be much

better than the advice you give me. I wish I were a lawyer. I would

gather cases of diabetic complications that have occurred since the year

2000, when the medical knowledge and medical technology has been

available to prevent and in some cases even reverse or cure some

diabetic complications. I believe with a few cases like in a class

action suit or even with individual doctors, I could make a fortune and

my clients would be better off, too. The insurance companies would

insist that the doctors know how to treat a diabetic from then on, or

they would not insure the physician. Every day I am thankful for the

folks on this list serve for saving my leg from amputation and showing

me how to achieve normal glucose levels. A special thanks goes to

, Pat and K. Bernstein, M. D for showing me the way. I am

absolutely serious here! I do not blame the diabetic who wishes to have

guidance and help and no complications, even though they may have these

complications. It is not hard to understand their befuzzlement when

confronted with a character like me and their treating physician when

presented with information that is seemingly contradictory to what their

doctor is telling them. You want to know malpractice? How many

diabetics are told that insulin works only on carbohydrates? How many

are taught carb counting? How many diabetics are told what a

non-diabetic A1C is? I am sure there are many other examples of medical

mal practice than the few presented above, but it should wake some

people up to just a smidgen of how rampant medical malpractice is.

You know Pat, you are right. I mostly blame the doctors for diabetic

complications, but I do not discount the diabetic's role in the matter, nor

do I discount my role in the matter as a taxpayer in America.

There are some people who are hell bent on self destruction, and there is

very little we can do about it except to make a racket to raise awareness

regarding the seriousness of the problem.

Diabetes is a matter of not only genetics, but clout and personal resources

along with individual and societal responsibility. This issue is a highly

personal one for me, since I have close relatives and close friends who are

afflicted with this dread disease. Regardless of the competence or

incompetence or for that matter the ignorance of the doctor, it is he/she

who has the most clout in the care and treatment of the diabetic. A dumb,

ignorant doctor who is trusted by his patients has far more influence on the

decissions of the diabetic than you or I do. As long as the emphasis is on

treatment of the problem along with restoration and rehabilitation, rather

than prevention, the situation is going to get worse, not only for the

diabetic, but for society in general.

The cost for diabetes care is tremendous, and it does not look like it is

going to get cheaper or less expensive any time soon. As long as an

insurance company would rather pay several thousands of dollars for an

amputation, hospital care and prostheses and rehab therapy rather than a

much smaller amount for prevention and education, then it is just going to

get worse.

The knowledge and technology is there today to prevent practically all

diabetic complications, but if it is ignored and abused it cannot help.

To master glucose control takes six or more finger sticks per day with

lancets, and a glucose monitor and those expensive test strips. If you use

six test strips per day, one is talking about a cost of around$150 per month

just for the cost of the test strips alone, and this does not take into

account the cost of the oral medications or insulins used. Now we are

talking about $250-$300 per month just to test the glucose level and

medications needed to achieve diabetes control. Yes, it is expensive, but

far less expensive than the alternative of diabetic complications. I

haven't even mentioned the cost and effort of a diabetic learning how to

count carbs, which we all know is a pesky problem.

Yes, we, you and I, share in the situation as it is today, as well as to

what it will be tomorrow.

I totally agree with you ; especially since I have fallen into that

pattern myself. It is often hard to change from what we learned in the past

from our doctors and diabetic educators. Give the drs some credit here;

they do not live with us and it is up to us to tell them what works for our

bodies and what doesn't.

emotional dysfunction if I had to be honest. My wife being a professional

clinical counselor would be the first to say many eat because of some sort of

emotional quark whatever it might be. Feelling restriction, death of a spouse,

comfort, denial, and so on.

An eating disorder, as my wife puts it, is not limited to bulimia and anorexia,

it is also those who eat and cannot control it, are obese, and so on. Those are

also classified as eating disorders and have emotional components to it.

emotional dysfunction if I had to be honest.

First of all I wish to thank for his concantinations of the message

thread. I agree with him that this series of communications would make an

excellent chapter or presentation at a professional conference devoted to

the care and treatment of the diabetic. Indeed, I think it would be well

received by the press who are always looking for a sensational and

controversial topic. Well, they need not look any further than right here

for what follows. These are not the musings of idle gossip, but well

thought out and considered responses of some people who really care about

what is happening to one particular individual named Wayne and some of his

cyberspace friends, whom cannot be legitimately called intelectual slouches.

We are deeply concerned about what is happening to Wayne and the

implications of his situation for thousands, possibly millions, with a

similar condition.

We all have something in common. We are blind and diabetic , and there are

none so blind as those who refuse to see.

The ravages of diabetic complications are well documented and the attempts

by his peers to help him are, too, indicated.

Wayne is in a struggle for life, and he steadfastly holds to the treatment

and recommendations of his physician(s). We tried to show him a better way

before he had his first leg amputated, and we tried even harder before he

had his second leg amputated. Now he suffers with kidney failure, being on

dialysis and he has bed sores. Make no mistake about it. These are all

complications of diabetes, which can be mostly avoided with proper care and

treatment by a knowledgeable doctor and a well informed patient.

I wish to thank the following for their efforts:

Daubenmire, a computer programmer

Wolfe, a nurse educator

Dean Masters for kicking off the topic

and of course Wayne. Best wishes old friend.

Harry Bates, a retired psychologist

You guys let me know if some corrections need to be made to the above

message. I plan to edit it and sub mit for publication, if possible.

Thanks

give us about 1 week to add/pick over it some. if you are seriously going to add

to it,and do a paper, lets do it right. I.E summary, then the article,

That is a grand idea, and I am quite willing. Professional journals and

conferences have a high standard, whereas the news papers and magazines

might be easier to do.
