Apple, I wrote three messages for the group early this morning and they still

haven't posted. Are our writings really monitored by some whodoo voodoo guy

somewhere? I find it really odd. They are in my sent file but have not

appeared here. Well, that kept me from my housework for awhile!!!!!! I'll

check back after the floors are done. (I'm getting ready for an appraisal

and am playing Martha with perhaps a little feng shui.) Is that how

been keeping a window with it open because then people can at least see that

Anyway, a little about me. I rejected the disease model from the getgo of

my " recovery " . After 4 years clean in NA/AA, I was basically at a

crossroads - either use or do something different. So, I started an NA

meeting called " Freethinkers NA " . We ditched all the readings and steps and

God and all that. We actually have our own readings which are pretty cool.

Could be I'll post them sometime. Anyway. The meeting is pretty cool. The

three real solid members we have are me with 4 years, and two other

program-haters with 9 years apiece. All of us talk about leaving the

fellowship and how much the fellowship sucks and the steps suck and God

sucks. Newbies should up every once in a while, but when they hear that

there's " no recovery " in the rooms, they tend to not come back - suits us

just fine. We have us and a few people that come consistently.

You may be thinking - well, you're a sell out for keeping it an NA meeting.

My thought is like this - no, not really. Its like we're attacking from the

inside. I can't tell you how happy I was when we finally made it onto the

regional meeting list. I was super happy because I knew that if any of the

people who had any say about what meetings go into the list and which don't

knew about our meeting, they wouldn't have let it be in. " WHAT? No steps,

no sponsors, all they have is clean time - must be dry drunks " - or

something to that effect. We get newbies and we get to expose them to a

different way to look at " the program " .

Oh yeah, the best part is that we refer to all other NA members as " Washies "

(short for brainwashies). Its pretty cool. We've started to get taunted at

washie meetings by people that catch wind of our meeting. Hehe.

I logged on at work today, and to my delight saw that two people were

in the chat area, however my browser crashed when loading the chat

page. Tried MS Internet Explorer as well as Netscape. I can get it

from home. It is a good idea to have the chat window open like you

say. I'll do it too when I " m at the 'puter for a long stretch.

HOW IN TARNATION DID YOU GET YOUR FREETHINKERS MEETING ONTO THE

REGIONAL MEETING LIST!!

This is fantastic. No, I think it's great that you have a freethinker

meeting. To blow 12 step groups to smithereens is an unrealistic goal.

There are too many desperate people, and the infrastructure is already

in place. I think that formations of groups like what you describe are

a good thing. I like your use of the word " washies " . Ken Ragge

discusses this in his book, namely how the use of humor disempowers the

rigid dogmatic steppers. One example he cites, which I love, is when

steppers say " nobody ever drank while working the steps " , the

appropriate response is: " no, but they sure drink a lot afterwards " .

If you have time, can you post some of these original writings?

I think the egroups upgrade has significant flaws. Don't blame AA.

Open With:

This meeting was founded by NA members who question the assumptions of the

NA program. We encourage freedom of thought in our meetings. We do not ask

that you restrict your discussions to problems with drugs. We also

encourage expressions of doubt or concern about the NA program. We find

this approach to be highly spiritual and in accordance with the principle of

honesty in Narcotics Anonymous.

The format of our meeting is as follows: The meeting is an hour long. In

the first portion, we share one at a time, as in typical meetings. Each

person may share as many times as they like, and in no particular order.

When everyone is done sharing, the meeting becomes an unstructured

conversation.

Close With:

" We come from various walks of life and experience, so it is natural that we

bring with us differing concepts of spirituality. In NA, no one is forced

to believe any set of ideas. Each one of use can believe in anything in

which we want to believe. This is a spiritual program, not a religion. "

Very nice preamble. Love the e-mail address too. I still can't

believe that your meeting can exist at all, and I think it's wonderful

that it does. I finally contacted e-groups about my chat problem.

Seems chat does not work on Macs, so I'm at a loss. I use a Mac at home

and at work.

So what's the usual meeting size? Do your members go to the standard

I knew I liked you! Another Macintosh freak. I finally bought an imac with a

high speed internet connection and never looked back. I even have a

shareware writing program. Bill G. be damned. Another evil Bill!!!!

I might need another Mac, and maybe a notebook too....

Hi all,

Apple - yeah, most of the people at " Freethinkers " go to other meetings. I

pretty much don't, as I *hate* meetings. Goddamn it - I can't stand to

listen to their shit. That's all it sounds like to me - shit. Just

non-stop flow of it...

" Oh, and then I admitted that my life had become unmanageable - ya know, I'm

just going to get current - just for today - I had to admit - I really had

to check my motivations - I decided to call my sponsor - I felt like using

today " - AAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHH DIE!!! HATE meetings... whew... not a violent

person usually... the groups just kill me...

Anyway - I think we gotta get a live chat going on that everyone can do

(including you freak Mac people I don't know maybe we can use MIRC or

ICQ or one of the webbased ones. It would be cool...

Anyone ever hear of the Qs? I think they may be based in DC. But they are

like a psudo-cult offshoot of AA. i.e. They are *more* cultlike than AA.

My roomate had been a part of them for a while, so my info is through him.

Anyway, so like the main thing is that there are specific 'Q' meetings and

they are *strictly* controlled by their sponsors. One of the things is that

they're not allowed to go to non-'Q' meetings. They treat the big book like

it's the word of God and the whole thing is based on this one powerful

personality - Q. (or something Q., don't remember offhand). Its a lot

of younger-type members of AA and the sponsors are allowed to sleep with

their sponsees girlfriends. One member that my friend said used to be in it

was sharing in a meeting that his sponsor told all his sponsees to quit

their jobs and go live at the beach for a few months. Anyway. Just thought

I'd put that out there.
