I have been post-op for almost 1 year (next Saturday) and never had a

protein shake other than CIB and only had Protein problems while in the

rehab hospital for the foot. I wouldn't go out spending good money when milk

and CIB should do the trick.

Hi

Carnation Instant Breakfast only has about 4gr of protein, add a glass of milk (8) gives you 12 and our Dr. had us add a few teaspoons of nonfat powdered milk for additional protein, so you can easily get at lest 16 grams from a shake. I really like the chocolate carnation, but not the vanilla

Jeannie,

Get your Carnation Instant Breakfast (Sugar free), or protein drinks (Atkins

is good). These will be a start for your protein intake, and as some people

do, they continue having at least 1 shake per day to get their daily intake.

Jeannie,

Some people use them as a meal replacement, while others use it as an

additive for their protein intake for the day. You want to try your best to

get in at least 40-60 gr of protein per day, and some shakes can get you up

to 30 grams right off the bat.

Help! I am pregnant as I told all of you after my cystectomy (it actually

I've heard that a cyst rupture can cause a mild fever w/cramps and some

dizziness. It shouldn't affect your pregnancy, just fluid in the abdomen

causing a systemic effect. Your body produces a " fever " to try to combat

any bacteria present anywhere in the body. Don't worry unless your temp.

gets over 102 deg. Of course you're following this PG very closely and your

Dr. will re-assure you of all of this right? The effects of this cyst(I'm

sure it was just fluid filled) should not effect your implantation. Try to

relax and contact your Dr. tomorrow.

I know this is all so difficult. As I see it, you did good research

to find a doctor knowledgeable in treating AS and now, try to let

yourself trust him to treat you. Different specialists do treat this

problem differently. And no doctor, not even the best, can GUARANTEE

a successful outcome. Our bodies each respond differently to the

hormone treatments, etc. But from what I recall of your situation,

you're starting with a hopeful prognosis, and now it may be time to

sit back and let yourself be treated by a doctor who's considered an

expert.

If there are specific concerns you have about his treatment plans, ask

him about them. But I think at some point you have to turn the reins

over to him. The one downside to seeing so much info about other

people's treatment for AS is that it keeps us stressed out, always

second guessing our treatment. But what seems clear is that even the

best specialists differ in their approach to hormones, balloons, etc.

Hey, you are not the only one who has those feelings, dreams,

(nightmares) etc. I am sure all of us have had that happen more than

once. It's a huge commitment once you start braces. There's really

no going back. This feeling will pass. You may get it again in a

month, week or even day, but the majority of your days will be filled

with excitement when you start to see your teeth move and as you get

closer to " the day " . I am two weeks pre-op and scared to death. But

I can't wait for it to be over with. When I get those feelings, I

just try to put it out of my mind and not think about it. You won't

do yourself any good worrying about it now, especially so far away

from your surgery date.

Hang in there. I think this journey is an up and down rollercoaster

ride. Before you know it, you'll be at the top of the hill again.

Hey Annie, its weird you should mention a dream. I had one last night

about being in a room where someone else was being operated on by

just one guy and there were all theses weird looking scary

instruments covered in blood..eeeeeek!!!!!!! nope youre not the only

one scared to death! Ive never been in hospital either- so Im trying

not to think on it too much. I have a fear of waking up in the middle

of surgery too......but my mum (who was a nurse) tells me theres no

way in the world we could wake up. its strong stuff they give us!!!

I was talking about it with a friend the other day, who didnt know

i was going in for surgery. she told me how brave I was and how it

was good that i was finally doing something positive about my

insecurities. Well, I dont feel very brave- but hey Im fine as long

as I dont think of the surgery....and theres plenty of time to panic

about that isnt there!......these guys here will help us out. I

remember the first time braces and surgery was mentioned to me----I

felt sick! literally!...now, im taking it in my stride....so dont let

the panic get a grip!

Sorry your mouth is so sore!!! you have my sympathy!, you'll soon

toughen up to the brace.youre coming through the worst- I promise!!!

Love Allie xx

Hi,

I have heard of people using the silicone ear plugs in place of wax

for their braces/wires. Just pinch a bit off to the size you need

and place in the spot you would the wax. Those who I have heard from

that used it, swear by it saying it's better than wax...it's softer,

easier to work with and comes off in one peice!

Silicone ear plugs like this should be found anywhere....from the

drug stores to Wallmart!

Good luck, I hope it works for you!

Awwww. So sorry you're having a bad day!

It's natural to get down and blue, especially when things are hurting

you, and you start thinking about them and can't stop. And nightmares

are also not unusual. Go look on the xsorbit site. there's a whole

post just for that. One I share with someone else is getting a real

mouthful of yuccky chewing gum that I can't stop from growing and

getting yucckier... Now don't let the power of suggestion make you

share that one!

Tell you what helps me when I get really blue. Get some exercise --

go for a walk, for instance. Or to a gym, if you have access to one.

Mozart helps me, too. So if I can go for a walk with my CD player and

earphones, that's even better. For you it may be metallica or the

beatles, or Lord knows what else.

Another suggestion: Figure out something nice you can do for someone

else. Go visit a nursing home, maybe? Or call someone you know is

lonely? Or bake some cookies for your ortho and his staff? Whatever.

Just get your mind going in a different direction.

And I don't think you're gonna wake up during the surgery. I asked my

surgeon if they could maybe put me out with a drip, instead of that

breathing stuff. He grinned at me and answered, " Nope. We'd wake you

up. " So your guy will make sure you get enough of what you need to

keep you out and under while he's working. That comes under the

category of things not to worry about, methinks.

Good luck. Hope it's better by now! You can probably improvise some

sort of temporary substitute for the wax if you have access to any

sort of silicone stuff. Meantime, treat yourself to a bowl of ice

cream or something else that is soft and cold. It'll help.

I know exactly how you feel. We are at the same stage. I had braces

on Monday and am getting frustrated with the eating. My bottom lip

has an actual slice across it. Plus, it seems that no matter what I

choose to eat, it's forbidden. Like popcorn at the movies, salsa and

chips, and this morning my husband made a banana-walnut pancake just

for me. He was heartbroken watching me pick the nuts out. Friday

nite we went for a beautiful steak dinner. The waitress asked if

everything was alright because I was taking so long eating the

steak. It was cooked to perfection-I just couldn't seem to get the

chewing right. Then, I start thinking.....this is exactly how it

will be after surgery! Smaller version, perhaps to get us ready?

Hang in there, kiddo. Alot of people are routing for us. I think

Cammie is right about getting out and doing things. I started walking

the beach with a friend. It has become our " therapy " session. We

spend it talking with no interuption! What a blessing! Hope this

helps.

How long have you been stuck? If it's less than a week, I suspect we'll get

a post by Saturday saying you've suddenly lost 2 lbs.

The amount of water in your body fluctuates.

I've been trying to stabilize my weight for about 12 weeks now. I find that

the standard deviation of my daily weight is about 1 lb. (Yes, I'm a

geek....) That means that 1/6 th of the time, my weight is 1 lb above the

average and 1/6th of the time it's below the average. This is just due to

water. It's completely possible for the " high " day to follow a " low " day.

When that happens, it temporarily looks like I " gained " 2 lbs in a day.

But, I didn't. It's water. The weight always reverts to the average.

(That's why I always calculate the average every week-- the water

fluctuations get averaged out somewhat).

So, based on my experience, you could lose two pounds, but water would

temporarily " hide " the evidence.

If you've been stuck a month, then you really have look at things.

I exercise 4 x a week for anywhere from 15 min (walking tape) to

It may. The loss at the very beginning of a weight loss program can be

water. If so, your weight loss would look fast at first, then you *might*

gain back a few pounds, then you would start to lose steadily.

It's important to gut through that second period of the diet.

I don't want to give up!!!

########definitely do not give up, you can do it and you and i both

know that you can. we all can do it. it's great to hear you say that

you don't want to give up.

I still have my old pants in the closet (26s) but I won't wear

them!!!

#########that's great that you don't wear them, i try to buy snug

pants so that it helps me remember to stand up straight and keep my

tummy in, but these are baggy and the next size doesn't quite button

yet. it's wierd to be in between sizes like that, that's never

happened to me before.

I think about it but then I think NO I don't wear that size anymore!!!

#######exactly and you know you don't need to wear them, you'll look

better in your current size then you will those old pants. you've

worked hard to get where you are

I should get rid of them but something is stopping me

#########good. don't worry about getting back to that size, because

we will help you stay away from them, but it is a good idea to keep

them, when you reach your goal you will have motivation to stay there

and know where you came from and how far you came with all that hard

work, also it will show you how much weight you lost, even if you are

only one or two sizes smaller there is still a difference and if you

compare you will see how much of a difference you've already made. i

only wish i had kept a pair of my biggest pants, but i gave them to

someone who also is losing weight and that wass their new size, so at

least someone got some use of them for sometime. you could always do

that, we could do swaps of sizes we don't wear anymore and fitness

equipment and videos etc instead of tossing them. the person that

wants them could pay the shipping and we could all share things that

we can't use anymore. saves us all money from going to the store. i

think that would be great, maybe someone could use them, or has a

size they used to wear that maybe you now wear.

I hear everyone else in this group going to the gym and I remember

when I belonged to one a few years ago and enjoyed going I would feel

so healthy (never lost weight then but still felt healthy)!!!

########even if you didn't lose weight at least you were working out

and getting that body moving, and you're right you can really really

enjoy a gym so good luck with the look.
