One non-surgical option for control of bleeding is birth control. Im on

depo-provera and it has stopped my massive bleeding and I am no longer

anemic.

Did your dr say anything to you about Lupron yet? I

am taking Lupron to shrink my fibroids before getting

them removed via myomectomy. You are probably too

young to even consider a hysterectomy. I would seek a

2nd opinion. If you do not want children, you could

try the Uterine Artery Embolization. A good site for

this is www.fibroidcorner.com. I found a lot of

valuable information there. Also you might want to

get the book called Fibroid or Fibroids. I have not

bought it yet but I am going to get a copy of it.

may need to get the surgery. From what I've read,

it's not that bad. I have a 11cm fibroid which is

considered large (as a baby's head). I have been told

to take Lupron for about 6 months and try to shrink

the fibroid and get it away from my endometrium (where

the baby lives) and then the dr. can remove it and I

should still (hopefully) be able to get pregnant and

carry a baby full term. I found out about my fibroid

in September 2001 and have been researching it from

that day forward. If you have any specific questions,

share what I have found out w/ anybody who asks.

Hi Steph

I am trying to avoid surgery as well. The doctor I saw recommended

hysterectomy too. Being on this list, reading everything I can get my hands

on and web browsing has help me understand the whole fibroid thing as well

as surgical options (none of which I'm in any hurry to pursue). The women

here are great and very supportive of each other no matter what your

decision may be. My reasons for not having surgery are:

1. Time off work

2. Insurance deductible

3. Taking chances with my awesome sex life

I got allot of information on alternate treatments for this condition from

these gals as well. It's only been about 2 months since I've been taking

herbs and stuff but I'm already hopeful. Last month I went THREE WHOLE weeks

without bleeding! It's horrible to live in fear of your period....I know all

too well. My blood hemoglobin count was down to 7 at one point. Once I get

the bleeding manageable, I'm going after these suckers (the tumors) with a

vengeance. There are supposed to be things that might even shrink them.

Right now, I'm using Black Walnut, NuFem (from herbsfirst.com), and

progesterone cream. Of course I'm always looking for more herbal cures and

waiting on the woman from this list with the tea recipe. Be patient with

these alternate cures. I think they take time. But I'm in no hurry. The

tumors aren't going anywhere any time soon. Good luck with your quest for

It's funny how every OBGYN we come across says something different. I just

found out I had a fibroid when I went for a vaginal ultrasound. I had been

bleeding for almost a month straight and didn't know what was wrong. My

OBGYN didnt think the fibroid had anything to do with the bleeding and

barely mentioned it at all. She told me to do " nothing " about it and that

this was very common (and I'm only 24).

I also read the posts in this group and see how many of you have gone

through different surgeries. This is not something I want to experience,

but I wonder if my fibroid will keep getting worse if nothing is done. This

is very scary for me, as my husband and I are trying to get pregnant. The

doc just keeps saying " its nothing to worry about " . I don't know how its

possible for one doc to say.....its nothing and another to say....lets take

out all your female organs (hysterectomy). This is so confusing.

Hi Steph,

If you search the archive using the word " natural " or " diet " or

" herbal " , you can get several different groups of old messages

that talk about coping with fibroids naturally.

's info regarding the natural treatment web site is the

other thing I would have suggested. I also echo her caution

that natural methods take time: lots of time. My experience is

that homeopathic and herbal treatments sometimes take a year to

yield results (depending on the ailment etc).

I believe there are a lot of women who are in the " watch and

wait " subset (I'm one) of this group--they just tend to be a

bit quieter. It's all a bit frightening at first. But once

I got used to hearing all about various surgeries, I started

to be really grateful that my fibroids are not too problematic

and thankful that if they ever become problematic, I know

where to go and whom to ask!

Hi Steph,

Can't help you with any shrinking methods; however, I can totally relate to

you being afraid of surgery because the thought of it scares me to death.

Just wanted to let you know you weren't alone on that one. I feel like these

fibroids have to be really bothering me and affecting my life in order for me

At this point I can " watch and wait " . I am in BC

Canada, and it does bother me a bit that the first

word I hear from my Doctor in the H word. I will be

seeing a specialist at the end of November and I'd

really like to understand this whole thing before I

Both doctors are wrong. You do need to be concerned but you should

not have a hysterectomy. It makes my blood boil that a young woman

like yourself would be given such awful advice. Your situation seems

bad already and won't get better without treatment.

Where do you live? Perhaps someone on the list can recommend a good

doctor. Don't give up. Keep getting information.

It would be important to state here some of the drawbacks of Provera and Depo

Provera.I was on

Provera for about 10 months and it did control bleeding,however every once and a

while I would get

" breakthrough bleeding " for which I was instructed to go off the pills for 7

days and then

resume.This system worked very well,however a time came when it no longer

worked.That was just prior

to my surgery in July.I went into surgery on 40mgs of Provera-4 times the

" normal " dose! There was no

other place to go but surgery at that time,except maybe Lupron.It only bought me

time.

There have been other members who have been on Depo Provera,which is Provera by

injection.Some of

them have reported more or less the same experience as I have just reported on

the pill form.Also

there is suggestion in the literature that progesterone,which is what provera

is,can encourage

fibroid growth.That is what the RU 486 studies are about.RU 486 is an

anti-progesterone.Progesterone

will not stop fibroid growth in most women,and may in fact,contribute to it.

I am certainly glad that when my progesterone therapy completely broke down that

I already had a

surgeon lined up.

If you are terrified of surgery, why not look into Uterine Artery Embolization.

This is a minimally invasive treatment done by an Interventional Radiologist,

but you should be in contact with a gynaecologist for aftercare. If you and the

consultants think UAE is an option, it would be best not to delay the procedure

too long if your large fibroid is growing -- it is already above the optimal

size for treatment.

want a histerectomy. I was really shocked when, in talking with my

Dr. she did not or would not consider UAE. I've read so much about it

and her attitude surprised me. But, she has referred me to a

specialist. I want to go in loaded with information. I will ask about

Lupron. I had read somewhere that this was a temporary fix. Is that

true?

Steph,

Lately on this list it seem that there is many women who are taking

Lupron, and personally it scares me. Do some research on your own

before you mention it.

There are many side effects so it's not for all of us. (check www.

lupronvictims.com and other sites) I had one doctor (out of 6 I saw)

mention it. But then this was the jerk who hadn't even looked at my

chart and was demanding a pelvic exam before he would even talk to me

when I was just trying to get my meds changed when my doctor was out

of town. I had already read the information and believe me I was not

a candidate for this drug.

Yes you are right about this drug. It may shrink the fibroids but

when you go off the drug they grow back. Many doctors use it in order

to make them smaller before surgery. Others won't use it for this

same reason, it makes the little ones smaller and harder to find.

Some women use it and have no shrinkage, others do. Some have side

effects, some long term, others don't. So it's a gamble taking it.

If I remember right you said you were having problems with heavy

bleeding. This is not something to mess with as I and many of us on

this list have learned. The first medication I took to stop the

bleeding didn't work for me, in fact sped it up and I ended loosing

20% of my total blood in 2 days and needed a transfusion. (check the

archives using my name to read some of my more detailed posts) Also

if the drugs work those old nasty fibroids seem to keep bleeding and

many of the drugs you can't stay on long term. I think this is why

you are reading about so many of us having to deal with them

surgically. I ended up having a UAE and about 6 weeks later the

fibroid expelled it self so now I am fibroid free!

Some people can live with fibroids as long as it doesn't impact our

quality of life or health. Lots of women go into the wait and watch

state hoping the fibroids won't continue to grow or can make it to

menopause when they have been known to shrink. I have a feeling most

of us on this list hit that place where our lives were so impacted

that we started our research on the web and found this wonderful

group.

UAE is prominent on the scene as treatment for fibroids and I considered it

for myself. However, take into account the possible side-effects on the

ovaries and sexual function that blocking of blood supply (via embolization)

to the uterus may have. Please research carefully and ask lots of questions

of the physicians that you talk to.

Terri and all. It is my understanding that with a UAE the problem of

pregnancy stems from the reduced flow of blood to the uterus to sustain a

pregnancy, not with fertility problems. Correct me someone if I am wrong.

position of not wanting children. It all has its

drawbacks I guess. The Lupron is only temporary.

Usually the fibroids grow back in 6 mos to a year

I don't know why you say that pregnancy is not an

option after UAE. I have seen several posts on the

embo group by women who have had successful

pregnancies after UAE. Doctors discourage UAE in

women who wish to become pregnant because they are not

100% sure to what degree fertility is effected.

Fertility can also be adversly effected by myo. There

I am not the original poster, but -- There just aren't any proven

studies about UAE and pregnancy so they say the route to go is

myomectomy if you wish to bear children. All the research will

confirm this. I did read one article that the success rate was only

30% with UAE. I did not want to risk not being able to have children

so I had the myomectomy and am so happy that I did it. I am 20 days

post op now and all of my symptoms are now gone -- no more getting up

to go to the bathroom every hour or so at night, no more bloated

feeling... I was initially scared to have the surgery but it truly

was not that bad. The first few days after surgery were tough, but

you get stronger each day. We're going to start trying to get

pregnant around February and that is something to look forward to!

Hi Jill and welcome to our group! It is a wonderful source of information

for thyca. Though I am a long-term survivor, I just began to get an

education here this year.

It seems that experiences with thyca treatment are many & varied, but the

princple treatment remains RAI 131 after TT. I can only tell you of my

experience. I wasn't given an initial dose of RAI 131 like yourself, or

many here. My radical TT was in 1965. Nothing about ablation was suggested

at that time. I had yearly scans for five years and then was declared

" cured. " My recurrence happened 17 years post surgery. You can imagine my

surprise. It was then that I had RAI ablation of existing neck & chest

mets. Again I was given scans yearly for five years, then less frequently

as the years went on.

Thyca requires lifetime monitoring. One thing I leared here this year was

to ask my Endo to check my Tg (thyroglobulin) tumor marker while I was

hypothyroid. Since you have had a TT and ablation, it would be a good test

for you. My doctor does this test a couple of times yearly. You have come

to a great place for information and support. Again, welcome! Best to you

I have heard mention of TSH injections before the RAI treatment to stimulate

the cells to uptake the I131--is this what you are referring to?

As another new member, I would be very curious about that....apparently

you don't have to go off meds. My endo just mentioned it in passing and

stated that there were " allergy Problems " with it....

I have my endo appointment on Friday and I will ask about it...

concerned because they found some abnormal tissue in my left thyroid

bed durning a recent ultrasound. I guess like normal it is a wait and

see game
