TIA Acid Reflux is stomach acids (which are VERY strong) backing up into the esophagus. It is generally caused by weakness in the muscles betwen the stomach and esophagus, which normally work to close off the rather delicate esophagus from the brutal stomach acids. This is generally what causes " heartburn " (which is not the heart burning at all). If it is chronic (happening frequently or constantly, it is the chief symptom of Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (otherwise called GERD). GERD is a frequent prodecessor of esophageal cancer, which is why they tell you that if you have frequent heartburn and you feel like you're living on antacids, it is very important to get checked out, because it has potentially serious and fatal effects. I saw a TV special on acid reflux / GERD / esophageal cancer recently. I never knew it was that serious.
