Why don't you just presume that posting to the list IS a last resort option

and conclude that the mentors have our respect already and that we ARE

conscientious mature adults trying to learn a profession.

Personally, I don't have time to beg for " your highness " to answer my

Well thank you for making my point <G> You have to take the time to look up

the answers in order to learn. It takes less time to look up answers rather

than post to group and check back for the answers; and as you stated

up the answers and when you don't, then yep, that's where the laziness factor

comes in and that doesn't help anybody, the poor unsuspecting patient's note

, They may have references, but not all of them have them on the computer

where they can do wild card searches. Also, the Drake & Drake does not have a

diagnosis section. I am sure that everyone is working with the best that they

can get at the time, but not all of us have the same references and newbies

sometimes have to pick and choose which references they get and then get more as

they go along. I have been doing transcription for about 15 or more years now

and I now have quite a library of references, but I still don't have any on

CD-ROM, I don't have the QLDB, and I mostly stick with the Drake & Drake. Not

trying to come down on you, but this is a list where we try to be helpful to

each other and don't try to put others down or question their abilities for this

job. Margaret

Due to some of the extremely basic questions, such as the colchicine matter.

In the QLDB, the back section has diagnoses with the commonly used drugs

would have been very easy to find.

, I just went back through my trash to see who it was that sent out the

original message that got this all started in the first place. I have been on

this list long enough that I have gotten to know the people who send out

questions on a regular basis. This question was sent out by one of those people

who does send out questions quite frequently; however, she has always checked

her references and done what she could to find the answer for herself first.

She does not just send a message to the list whenver she has a question, she

tries on her own first. Have you ever had one of those days where you just

needed an extra pair of ears because nothing seemed to be making sense to you.

I have and I have sure been glad when someone was willing to listen and help me

out, not by putting me down and making me feel stupid for asking the question,

but by helping me to learn that when he says what sounds like this, he really

means this. The questions may seem basic to you, but we were all new at one

time and they aren't basic to newbies. I don't know where I would be if my

first mentor had just laughed at me and told me to just go look it up. Now, if

you enjoy flame wars, just go on back to KAMT and enjoy it there. We don't

flame each other here. Margaret

Margaret -I've been an MT for 20 years and some of these questions are flat

out scary and the most basic that any reputable school would teach. It makes

you question the true knowledge of these MTs. If you don't have references

big difference between helping compared to what NMTC does, which is give out

answers. True helping is teaching how to be resourceful.

" The excuse of no cash doesn't cut it with me "

as it most likely shows that the MT education was also skimped on too thereby

not really preparing the new MTs for this wonderful world of MT. Sometimes it

costs money to make money. If so much time wasn't spent on the boards asking

questions, that would = more $$ in the cash dept.

, I know when I started out we didn't have to come up with a bunch of money

for reference books, of course back then there weren't many reference books, but

where I started out all of the reference books were supplied. Just think if you

were having to start out now. The computer and software alone is very expensive

and then having to get lots of reference books on top of that means a big cash

outlay just to get started. I sure wouldn't want to have to put out all that

money, but these people do. They are willing to put the money into getting

started, but sometimes fall just a bit short. Besides, all the reference books

in the world don't do a lot of good when you think you are hearing a word that

starts with the wrong letter or just can't seem to figure out which direction to

go to get started. I am very proud to be a part of this list, to help out the

people who are trying to get started in a profession where it sure helps to have

others around but where they are starting out alone, with no one else to

" listen " to what they are hearing. I just can't imagine what some of these

newer people are having to put up with just to get started in a profession

where, according to the ads, " anyone can work at home. " I think we need to have

a " newbie appreciation day " for them to have the courage to take on this job.

My hats off to all of you. Keep up the good work gals. Margaret

I don't know about anyone else, but I've never had $400 at one time to buy

all the books at once. Monday I ordered $200 worth of books from Stedmans

that were on sale, and that's the most I've spent at one time. Prior to

that

I had ordered about $100 worth and promised myself I wouldn't order more

until those were paid for.. which I did. I've been buying more each payday.

I think I pretty well have all the ones I want. The only exception is since

I've already bought a new drug reference this year (Quick Look Electronic

2001), I'll wait till next year and buy the new Drake and Drake. Oh, and

Vera Pyle, which is on back order right now.

I suppose it might be a little different if one were an IC.. One could

possibly take out a business loan and perhaps buy things all at once, but

I'm

an employee and pretty much always have been, so I've been buying as I go

each payday. That's part of the reason why most of the time when I answer

questions on this list I give my source..That way the other MTs on here get

an idea of what books are good references. Just my 2 cents.

I remember when I started out on this list (don't remember how long ago). I

was never able to help anyone out because I did not know any of the answers

to the questions everyone was asking. Now, as I have come quite a long way,

THANKS TO THIS GROUP and a little more experience, I am starting to be able

to answer some of them. I feel it is a good test to see how far I have

really come! I just love this group and it has been also a learning

experience into specialties I don't even know. I am thankful for this

group. I don't have to get too stressed out about getting my questions in

to the people I work for before a certain time. Not that all the questions

I have will get answered but it has rarely failed me (I think maybe I can

count a couple where I just had to flag it for accuracy).

Just my two cents....since in the weeee morning hours I would die sometimes

without this group!

LOVE THIS BOARD.

THANKS EVERYONE.....

I just had to say something about this subject going on!

Angelika,

How sad that you have to see any of this. This group NEVER was like this at

all until recently when a certain person started things. Hang in there. It

really is a good group. For those of us who have been here a while, we are

just hoping she will go away, so that things can get back to normal and

anyone can ask any kind of question, dumb or not w/o fear of getting any

kind of flames or any kind of questioning about it.

I joined this list when I was a newbie, still am a newbie compared to a lot

of you out there. What I did when given an answer, your terms, was research

it anyway, so I would know how to find it the next time I would need to do

so. I don't know about the rest of you out there, but it is always a good

idea to verify any spelling regardless of where it comes from. If you don't

like to give answers, give helpful links, or give the term with the book you

found it in so that newbies are made aware of these references available.

Speaking only for myself, there are days when I just can not find a term,

even though it may be one I have used before due to simple tiredness or

maybe getting a certain spelling stuck in my mind. Sometimes these can be

very basic terms. Kind of like having someone asking your phone number and

you have to think a minute before you can give it to them. A little help

once in awhile never hurts anyone.
