Doc says (as she's chewing like a cow chewing cud), " I do not believe she has

I think she is saying distant, but I'm not sure because as I said she

Margaret -I've been an MT for 20 years and some of these questions are flat

out scary and the most basic that any reputable school would teach. It makes

you question the true knowledge of these MTs. If you don't have references

and I don't care how new you are, you shouldn't be transcribing. There's a

big difference between helping compared to what NMTC does, which is give out

answers. True helping is teaching how to be resourceful.

Due to some of the extremely basic questions, such as the colchicine matter.

In the QLDB, the back section has diagnoses with the commonly used drugs

underneath them. Also, a look-up or wild card search of that particular drug

would have been very easy to find.

Hmmmm........last I checked this list was here so we could help each other

out. I don't think I ask many questions on here, and if I do, I make sure I

research before I ask. As for the questions I asked today, I cannot research

if a doc is saying amorphous " junk " and I wanted to get a 2nd opinion as to

how to word that correctly. If you feel questions on this list are too

basic, perhaps you should not answer them and hit the delete button. As for

my reference books, I have Taber's medical dictionary, Stedman's electronic

medical dictionary, Quick Look Drug Book 2001, Monthly Prescribing Reference,

Dictionary of Medical Acronyms and Abbreviations, The AAMT Book of Style, The

Gregg Reference Manual, 1999 PDR, and Webster's dictionary.

I probably shouldn't go here because I'll probably get in trouble, but I am

going to anyway. I know of a good MT list you can join. You'll fit in

really well! If you would like to know e-mail me privately :) (By the way

there are not supposed to be any oldie vs. newbie wars on this list, that is

I don't think it's fair to assume that people who ask questions on here are

lazy. In the time I've been on this list, (which isn't very long) I have yet

to see someone who I think is not even trying to find an answer. We were all

new once. I was mentored and helped along in the beginning, and IMHO if you

get an answer from a more experienced MT you tend to never have to ask that

same question again. No one comes out of MT school knowing everything...

heck, even us oldtimers are still learning. I've learned a few things on

here as well. :)

Just for future reference, if somebody opts to purchase the entire Stedman's

line, the total will come to less than $400. You have to really beat up the

customer reps on the 800 line but they will do it for you. Same with the

other MT reference vendors such as QLDB, etc., to get the book and CD.

I've been an MT for 14 years now, and I've got to tell you, I'm just now

building up my library ... It takes time, and besides, I was working in-house

until about 4 years ago and most of the books were provided, usually a

current PDR, Dorland's, and AAMT BOS. PERIOD.

Yes, in an ideal world, we should all have all the books we need, but heck..

who lives in an ideal world?? Certainly not I. I'm finally financially able

to afford to update my books. In addition, I see your point about shaking

your head that people should know these things already, but hey... isn't it

better that they ask than to assume they know and do things incorrectly? I

think it's admirable for anyone to be willing to learn and I would never

dream of stifling that. :)

Asking if people have reference books is not a flame war Margaret. How one

You know I think this too sometimes, but I would never have the nerve to come

out and tell anyone and make them feel beneath me! By the way, I have been

doing this for 2 years now (Oh I know I haven't been doing it 20 long years

like you) and it wasn't until about 2 months ago that I joined this list and

had been doing this completely on my own without this list so please do not

lecture me on researching because I am well aware of how to do that thank you.

I don't know about anyone else, but I've never had $400 at one time to buy

all the books at once. Monday I ordered $200 worth of books from Stedmans

that were on sale, and that's the most I've spent at one time. Prior to that

I had ordered about $100 worth and promised myself I wouldn't order more

until those were paid for.. which I did. I've been buying more each payday.

I think I pretty well have all the ones I want. The only exception is since

I've already bought a new drug reference this year (Quick Look Electronic

2001), I'll wait till next year and buy the new Drake and Drake. Oh, and

Vera Pyle, which is on back order right now.

I suppose it might be a little different if one were an IC.. One could

possibly take out a business loan and perhaps buy things all at once, but I'm

an employee and pretty much always have been, so I've been buying as I go

each payday. That's part of the reason why most of the time when I answer

questions on this list I give my source..That way the other MTs on here get

an idea of what books are good references. Just my 2 cents.

<< according to the ads, " anyone can work at home. " >>

That's the big problem and then people don't know what they are getting into.

Initial cash outlay is enormous and again, if you don't have the tools of the

trade, then you shouldn't be in the trade. Too many newbies have the idea of

working at home, blah, blah, blah, and then blame it on the schools, etc., or

whatever, because it costs more than they thought in order to get started.

Anybody jumping into a new field needs to research the field thoroughly and

but buy what schools, etc., have to say when you are paying them. Be informed.

I don't have a problem again newbies. It's mainly the schools and some of the

larger national companies that just throw these women to the wolves basically

giving them horrible dictators, acute care right off of the bat rather than

letting them cut their teeth on clinic work or a specialty in order to get

familiar with one set of terms. I never put a newbie on acute care unless

there are no accents whatsoever. Then if they do get an accent, it's in a

clinic setting.

So what I'm trying to say is shame on the newbies for buying all of this

gullible stuff without researching the field nor making the proper investment

for a promised match book $50K annually and shame to corporate America for

exploiting that.

Some gal e-mailed me with her reference book list which pretty much consisted

of a dictionary and a drug book. That will not cut it in the real working

world. If you do have a cash crunch re books, you can at the very minimum,

get away with a great drug book, AAMT BOS, Sloane's Medical Word Book (the

4th edition just came out) and a top of the line dictionary.

I have nothing against newbies and actually do try to help but it is very

obvious when one of you doesn't research. The s/l is one thing with the

colchicine incident but maybe wording the question differently would be

helpful to us old toads here; such as " I've done so-and-so but just want to

make sure this is right. " That is most certainly respected and very

consciencious.

Are you an employee at home or in a hospital setting? If at home, then yes,

you will have to get the books and like I said earlier, sale or no sale, beat

the CS reps up. If employee in hospital setting, then it's the hospital's job
