Sharisa and Kassi, I SEE YOU! :) I have a question (maybe opening a

can of worms) for you friends of mine who are on the spectrum. I want

all of my children to be healthy. If working on the allergy issues or

gut issues or diet issues of a child with autism makes them less

attracted to " lampposts " , is treating their medical issues wrong (in

your opinion)? I'm trying really hard to perspective take, understand

the message you all are sending. I want my children to be healthy--AND

happy. Penny

I can only answer with my view, not anyone else's. We

all know I am pretty " militantly " anti cure, though

not " supremacist " (supremacists confuse me, honestly)

and have enough medical issues to fill a book. I also

read scientific peer reviewed literature for sh*ts and

giggles so I do UNDERSTAND them all (epilepsy,

headaches that are somewhere between migraines and

clusters, true celiac, hypothalmic dysfunction causing

clinical adrenal failure, dipsogenic diabetes

insipidus, and hypoglycemia, and apart from that

perfectly healthy TYVM).

IMHO. Working on health issues that make someone SICK

is not a problem. And we all look more " whatever "

(autistic, OCD, ADHD, whiny, whatever) under stress.

Being sick or in pain is stress. So if there is a true

health issue, then treating it is normal. Not wanting

your child to be in pain is normal.

It's when the focus goes from health and pain, to

changing the child to look normal, that things get not

right. Because there is nothing wrong with being

different. Hurting yes, being different no.

What if the pro-cure and anti-cure " camps " all want exactly the same

thing, only they're using completely different language?

I think most do, until the lies and half-truths start. I look at it

like a bell curve. On one end you have the parents who hate everything

about their kids because they have autism. On the other you have the

people who think any attempt to do anything to help anyone with autism

is horrible. And in the middle, the high point, you have people that

love people with and without autism and only want to see every person

be the best he or she can be. The problem is that the few extremes can

taint the rest of us.

i am so glad that we are asking what words mean instead of yelling. i think

this is some wonderful progress and will help us 'to be on the same side'

doing all we can for our kids :)

Let's figure out a way to all be on the same side so we can all put our

energy into helping the kids instead of fighting one another. The more

I read the words of the anti-cure " camps " , the more I sense that a large

proportion of both sides actually AGREE, except that the " camps " are

using radically different terminology, and it's the terminology that

needs to be updated and agreed upon.

sondra i agrees. this post is very good. can i read it to our school

tomorrow for the children to read and we make lessons of it all. sometimes

children

asked what/how they should feel about something which was the right or wrong

way to feel about theeir autism. and this is a perfect answers for them, i

want them to have their own opinions not accept one handed down to them.

Crabtail

we are the whole child living school and this would be wonderful to read in

school tomoorw.

Sondra

I agree with you. But it's not just terminology. Some researchers in

the autism community have had a horribly untrue picture painted about

them, just as people with autism often get horribly untrue pictures

painted about them. I don't know how you get past people lying and/or

misunderstanding to benefit their own stances.

there is not ever going to be a way to express teh multiple views on

autism because it varies as much as the religions of this world, as the

cultures of this world and so there is never going to be of a complete

accepatance of others views just as there will never be of one religion

or belief system for the entire world because people will be to cling

to their own belief system no matter what the words or terminology is

to be.
