Hi all,Has anyone heard from Sharon's husband? I have been waiting all day, she said he had my number. I was wondering if someone else heard instead? Ann? ?

Dear ,

Glad to hear she's out and okay, boy another long day for her! I know when i talked to her husband I had an awful connection too, he must have been on a cell phone. Look forward to hearing from you tomorrow on how she's doing, 2 down, 1 to go!

[ ] Sharon

Ameet just called, Sharon made it out of surgery about an hour ago. She is ok. We had a bad connection but he said she was in recovery. I will have to speak to him tomorrow for the details. It appears they did more work on the dura and did a lamendectomy.

Oh boy..That sure was a long day for Sharon and her family! Did it

sound like they got done all they wanted to in round two? I really

hope so. I'll let you guys know if I hear anything more. I was

hoping Amit would call from a pay phone (I am local). Apparently,

his cell phone got wet. Ann

Thanks for the update . I am sorry you are facing recovery for

yourself and the ugly face of corporate America at the same time.

Heartless....even if they are letting you stay on for the moment. I

know I am a cynic but I can't help but wonder if they are not trying

to " front end " a discrimination law suit.

I hope that they placed a few of the implants in Sharon too...that way

day number last will go a little faster. I didn't have any dura work

and I still went in around 8:30 in the morning and didn't get out of

recovery until somewhere around 9pm. For a point of reference, the

paper that Rand presented on staging this way (although I don't think

this includes folks with the same set or circumstances as Sharon so

her time would problably be longer:

Average operating time (so none of the other pre or post/recovery time

is included) for Stage 1 469 mins with a range of 300-600. Average

operating time for Stage 2/3 588 mins with a range of 150-840 mins.I

will guess Sharon could go into the long range of each.

Please let Amit know that we are thinking of them and wish her well

for us!

Take Care, Cam

Thanks Titch, Cam and Bonnie,

I believe it all happens for a reason. I unfortunately, don't like

it all the time :( I'll post on Sharon if Amit calls. :(-

is being in ICU at this point typical, or should we be worried? I

sure hope everything is ok

HI SB

I do not know, I was at Beth Isread Deaconess, though I experienced a

few hours in recovery before going to my room, I did not go to ICU.

Maybe someone who was at NEBH can answer that.

I am not shocked that Sharon is still in ICU...I stayed up there for

two nights after both surgeries. I think I would have come down after

the first night but there were not enough beds. NEBH is a tiny

hospital, relatively speaking, so it is possible that when they sort

out who is going where on any given night, those who need the most

help might be more likely to stay upstairs an extra night or two. Plus

over the weekend the staffing might just be a little better for her

needs.

And then again, she just had a big surgery after another big surgery.

I was thinking about her today and thinking how awful those first 48

hours after surgery are. Yuck.

I hope we hear something soon! Cam

I think Rand often keeps patients in the ICU as long as he can because

of the care level. I have not heard anything more but I am not

surprised. We all know those first two post-op days are tough. Today

should be much better for Sharon. Ann

Dear ,

Thank you so much for keeping us updated on Sharon. Do you think she'd be up to phone calls in the next day or two? Did they say when the next surgery will be? Glad she's doing okay, sure hope the numbness goes away and her vision returns to normal. I'll send off another get well e-Mail, and try to call her later in the week. Is there a good time to call?

[ ] Sharon

HI all,I spoke to Sharon, she is out of ICU. She seemed a bit disoriented. I am sure it is the medications. I found out a little more info on her surgery. She did have the lamendectomy and the dura was patched. Most of the old hardware is now out. Rand inserted some pedicle screws. At this point she is having issue with numbness in her right arm and her vision is a little screwed up. Rand came in as we were talking so I had to let her go. It was great talking to her though. I am glad she is OK.

Hi All,

I haven't posted in a while, but today I was in Boston for an

appointment with Dr. Rand and stopped by afterwards to visit with

Sharon. She sends greetings to everyone. I don't know if she was in

ICU as of yesterday, but she's on a regular floor today. Her second

surgery was long and the third stage isn't scheduled yet. It may be

as

long as three to four weeks, depending on how she heals from this

latest round. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of details, and I

was

late getting up to visit her, but this is what I gather has happened

so

far, and I'm not even sure what was done in which stage, so forgive

me

if this is a bit disjointed. Apparently, two thirds of her original

harrington rod was removed. There was correction performed on her

spine with regard to a non-scoliotic defortity where the spine

actually

divided into two and had seperate duras(?). A small bone that made

up

the divide was removed and the dura was connected so that she now has

a

single dura. This was my layperson's understanding, I'm counting on

Sharon to correct any errors when she's ready to post. She did say

that this was a very complex procedure. Unfortuantely, there was a

tear and some leaking so they're now waiting for that to heal. She

had

cages placed in Friday's surgery in lieu of osteotomies (just as I

had)

and I'm pretty sure her third surgery will be when the rest of her

hardware will be inserted, although I think she may have had the new

rod connected to the remainder of old rod already, as well. Again,

my apologies for not

being clearer, but Sharon was medicated and we didn't have much time

to

visit. She did seem comfortable, though, her pain level was about a

three. She's understandably exhausted and worried about what comes

next

and the long time frame. Having family members with her has really

helped. She attemped to write a short post late last night on her

laptop and I had to smile when she described trying to accomplish

this feat via much manuevering of the hospital table and a mirror to

see the keys. Suffice to say, she left

it for another day.

My impression is that she'd love to hear from people, so I think it

would be okay to give her a call. (I hope!) She expects to be in

rehab

by tomorrow, so I told her I'd hunt her down through the hospital

directory, as she didn't have the number yet.

Hoped this helped to ease your minds.

All my best, Dianne in RI

P.S. I'd be more than happy to speak with the new member that posted

recently about a one day surgery. Mine was two years ago. I'm tired

now, so just wanted to leave an update on Sharon's condition.

Hi Cam,

I just called the hospital also and got the same message then came here

for answers. I also looked for her number but could not find it in my

PDA. I will continue the search and call when I do find it and let you

all know.

Hi, Kathy

Yeah, I've been sneaking around a bit. I got about half-way through an "I'm back" post, only to find it had gone POOF when my husband unplugged the computers to re-arrange things.

I'll try to get to it soon, but right now I'm trying to get ready to have a couple of friends over. Thank heaven I have a cleaning lady coming to help me pick up this awful mess this afternoon.

In a nutshell, I am doing amazingly well for 3 weeks post-op, and hope I am not doing too much!

Thanks a thousand times over to all for the thoughts, prayers, emails, phone calls, and visits! And the silky PJs! You are all amazing!

XXXOOO

Sharon

Sharon,I thought I saw you sneaking in a post or two! You have been in my thoughts a lot lately. We have moved and I was without a computer for quite a while. We might have to go offline again for a day or two to redo the carpet. And I've been sick. My darling grandkids love to share. :-)Hope you are feeling better. Write a note when you can. You are one amazing woman!Kathy
