Hi Sara,

Thanks for the welcome and quick reply. It was great to hear about your son and

see that he has found a life for himself that seems to suit him. I am trying to

think of transition now as sometimes I have no clue as to what Jake might do in

the future. Sometimes he is so connected to what he is doing and then moments

later is in " another world " . The main thing is to find something that he likes

doing for a number of hours at one time. I think this will be the year where we

start answering some of the questions regarding his inclinations/talents and

start strengthening those skills. Jake will be having a bar-mitzvah this Spring

which will be very moving and really mark this transition to manhood. (It is

not so much a religious ritual for us/him but meaningful just the same.) He

knows what it is and I think, having seen others' in the family wants one for

himself!

Anyway, glad to hear from you and about your son, Elie. I look forward to more.

Elie did not have his Bar Mitzvah as at that age he was way too much in his

" dream world " . Now, in our new community, they would LOVEf or him to do

this ritual, but we are not so interested. IT is a thought for another

time. Too many other issues at this time to even think about that one.

Elie's big thrill is that one of his mentors (for 5 years) is getting

married summer of 2009. Elie is to be in the wedding. HE is already

planning his speech (best men must make a speech) on how the guys can get

wives but still have to be guys - figure out how he is getting this thought

across when he speaks in three word sound bites!!??! But we do know what he

wants to say.

Elie's longest work stint is 2 hours at a time. Then he takes a break. That

is one of the myriad of reasons that we are not rushing for him to work in

" the community " . In GA, the goals is supposed to be for everyone to work

independently and live independantly in the community. I cannot envision

either of those things in my dream for Elie's future.

We are not even talking about the safety issues involved with someone who

thinks everyone is a buddy and that ice cream and trucks mean the owner is a

great buddy - if he can ride shotgun!!!

Hello to all!We are new to the group and I am so excited to have found you all.

My nameis , my husband is Shaugn and we have two children Logan (DS/ASD)

8and Emma 4. Logan was diagnosed with ASD at 6 yrs of age after seeing Dr.Keck.

We have really struggled trying to find a place where we belong as afamily, as I

am sure you are familiar with. Logan almost all speech at 4,just around the time

Emma was born and we moved. That year of school was atotal waste, but we thought

it was just the teacher as he changed schools,as well. It was a rough road, but

the dx of ASD was really a blessing. Weno longer feel like we are horrible

parents that cannot discipline ourchild, etc., etc.Logan is in a self-contained

class and has had an Autism Assistance dogsince November of 06. Her name is

Akira and she has changed our lives.Logan sleeps better during the night and is

more independent and safe inpublic.I know this sounds silly, but finding this

group is awesome! Davenport[Non-text portions of this message have been

What does your autism dog do? We tried a border collie for Elie when he was

a kid who headed for double yellow lines - but the dog jut nipped his ankles

- which he ignored!!!

We got her from 4 Paws for Ability in Xenia, OH. They are a little

different from other organizations in that the child does not have to be of

a certain age and they allow the families to their own fundraising so there

is not as long of a waiting list.

Logan is tethered to Akira when we are in public. He cannot dart off into

traffic or walk off with a stranger. She goes to church and restaurants

with us and Loan is tethered, but if he is having trouble coping, he also

sits by her or takes his shoes off to rub his feet on her fur. I have also

caught him rubbing her ear together with his fingers as if it were a ribbon.

She goes on field trips and sleeps with him, too. With time, she is

becoming his best friend. She is awesome! And I am so not dog person!!!

Let me know if you want any more info.

My wife sells herself short here. Not only is she not a " dog person " . She is

quite allergic to them and has been going for shots for almost two years so that

Logan can have the benefit of this dog. A couple of weeks ago, we were at my

Grandmothers house with a dozen or so other adults. Logan managed to sneak out

without anyone noticing. One of Akira's primary functions is search and rescue

or tracking. hooked her up, told her to track, and Akira found Logan

in a couple of minutes.

We were thinking of getting a companion dog for our son Cole. How did you

I would love to learn more about the service dog. It sounds like Cole has some

similar issues. Escaping being a big one and no fear of others, he especially

loves big burley men, the more facial hair the better, and the crepier the

better. (He has such a good heart:-) Sleep is also huge in our household, a

typical night when medicated is about 3-5 hours. Does the dog sleep with him or

does he just stay in the room? Well thanks for the info. We should chat

sometime my home e-mail is ildteacher@...

Akira actually sleeps with Logan. We found that a lot of Logan's night

waking issues were due to anxiety. Although they were helped a lot by

Risperdal, Akira sleeping with him really seems to have made a difference.

Now if we could only get his bladder to catch up! LOL!

,

Welcome to the group and hello to Logan! I have 5 children: Darriann, Dallass

(both married- 2 kids each), Danneen, Dorrthee and DJ (age 12, DS/ASD). DJ was

just diagnosed this fall with ASD at age 12. I, too, have found this group so

helpful and comforting!

welcome - Irish and living in MA - who would have thought?? :~)

I know there are a few other countries represented in MA but IRISH always

comes to mind.

Glad to welcome you and your clan.

My son, Elie , (adopted in Israel) was 12 before we got a dx of DS with

Pdd-nos??/ASD?? so I know that you have long wonfdered why is your boy

different from other kids with DS??

His number is , he is in Baltimore. If you can make the

trip, even to just get the dx it is worth it. He is the best

around. Anyone who has attended any National DS conferences knows

him. He is good, humble, smart and thorough. He is associated with

Hopkins. The best and worth it. medicaid paid for it.

Go with your gut, you probably know better than anyone. It took us

until was 14 for a secondary dx. He missed out on a lot of

extra help and understanding. But he has gotten lots more help with

the 2nd dx. I should have NEVER listened to certain teachers and I

feel our Dr. did not understand the importance of bringing this

double dx to the school table with school plans and the extra help

needed. Very frustrating but worth it for that child. You

sound like you are on the correct track. I suspected this about

when he was 2. I was always told, just DS. But my heart knew

different and I was correct. Sigh... Keep at it!

Hi I am Kris and I have come today along with and Rita from our Reece's Rainbow group. I too have adopted a child with Down syndrome, Kara, age 3 from Ukraine, but I also have a biological daughter with Down syndrome, Meghan age 7 I also have 5 older children, 4 adult sons; Fred, Terry, , and , and a teenage daughter . Later this year my family will travel to Estonia to adopt our 8th and last child, . She also has Down syndrome. She just turned 3. I have been dealing with sibling rivalry issues with Meghan and Kara and some skill regression with Meghan. Meghan does seem to be rebounding but what will happen when comes home? I am also wracking my brain about how to fit the kids in the minivan. I am wondering if anyone has heard of a specialized 3 seat car seat for the middle seat in the van? I know, wishful thinking... Kris, We have a 2002 Caravan. We moved the far back seat to the

middle (yes they have the latches for it) and then we moved the

middle to the back. Not the most convenient for anyone getting in

the back- we used the hatch door, but is flexible and that

way I don't have to remove the carseats. Good luck.
