Do you have a CASE #?

Who interviewed you? If you still have this name

or telephone number, I'd pick up the telephone,

call and tell them that you filed an appeal but

have not heard anything in response. They should

be able to give you a case worker or something.

Good luck and let us know how you made out.

I am not sure, I'm so scared I've blown it at this point. I let someone

talk me into doing it myself..... grrr.... I will try that and see what

happens.

Does your employer offer short or long term disability?

If so get it. That would pay till ya go on SSD.

If your employer does not offer it- ya might want to change employers. If it

is offered through your employer- often they can't deny ya coverage.

Thx, Dennis, this helps. I knew that you could get 8 or 900 per month

after but didn't know whether I'd have to totally stop working before.

That kind of changes things since there's no way we could live on one

income right now. But I'll keep it in mind for the future...

Thx,

The main issue is to get your doctor behind you if you should decide

to apply for SSDI. He/she needs to make it clear in your medical

records what your limitations are. It is very difficult otherwise

without positive lab work and erosions to get it otherwise.

My doctor has not been helpful in this area. He is terrible at

charting... as a result I have been denied twice by SSDI. In my case

SS department found I could NOT do my normal work. They agreed with

that.. but said " because of my age and education " I could do

sedentary work. And remember they only have to define substantial

work as being able to make around 900.00 a month. ( it doesnt matter

if you made 4000.00 a month in your previous job) So not being able

to do your current job is not always a sure thing when it comes to

SSDI approval. Good luck!

I started the process in August. I was told that I would receive an

answer in 4 months. I was sent to a specialist (psychologist, I

suffer from PTSD, bi-polar)in December since they couldn't make their

final descion based on my medical records. Once I saw the psych, it

would take 3 months for them to make their descion. It is now March

and I got a letter asking me to choose a password online to check my

benefits. I went online, choose a password and I saw my current

benefits would start this month. All together it took 6 months. I

know that it is not the norm.

I had all my medical records from the past 2 years from all my doctors

and I sent them personally to SSDI. So they didn't need to wait for

my doctors to send them copies of my medical records. I also hired a

lawyer right off the bat. I don't know if that helped my cause

any...but I figured it wouldn't hurt. My lawyer scheduled a hearing

at the next available time (1 year from when I offically hired him).

I called them today and they will cancel the hearing once they get

notifed of my approval.

I was told that it can take some time to receive my backpay...which

will go to the lawyer. I am just happy that I didn't have to jump

through hoops in order to receive my benefits. I don't know if I will

have to jump through hoops in order to receive my backpay. I passed

the first and hardest hurdle.

Did they tell you how much back pay you are entitled to? What was your date of

Kami,

I should be getting back pay for 14 months. They are stating that I

disability date is July 2006 when I got sick (long story). I can't

claim for the 1st 6 months I was disablied which will put me at

Januray 2007 to start receiving benefits. I was approved and will

start receiving benefits in March 2008. I think that is right...

I forgot to say CONGRATS! I, too, was fortunate enough to have my SSDI approved

on my first application in 2002. My date of disability was actually October 1997

but I was too proud and tried to go back to work for 4 years until finally my

therapist convinced me to apply in May 2002. I was approved within 4 months. If

I remember correctly, I received payments of 12 months prior in addition to from

the day I applied. I have also had one review since then in 2005 and will

probably face another one this year.

My advice to anyone seeking SSDI:

Don't wait to apply....Do it ASAP after injury/impairment.

See your doctor on a regular basis. DO NOT skip appointments because you feel

fine.

Keep accurate records of what treatments work/don't work including medications.

Be HONEST... Don't make yourself seem worse than you really are.

you will not have to jump thru hoops for your back pay. You do not

get SSDI for the first 5 mos of being disabled. But, they are quite

prompt whensending you money, usually yu'll get it before they way

Backpay usually goes back to the date of disability.

However, they keep out the first six months. When I

got my backpay it was around $20,000 and another $5000

for the lawyer. Because SSA messed up my case, I

never should have been denied. My lawyer fought them

and won on opening my case to the original date of

disability. 2002 and I didn't begin receiving any

until 2007. They usually send a letter though with

the amount of what one will receive.

What do the reviews entail? I've not had to have one

yet. My case is complicated since I applied in 2001

and was denied, went back to work for 6 months being a

temp human resources administrator but couldn't keep

the jobs due to being an insurance risk and all the

sick time and doctors appointments I have. I began

receiving persumption of disability in I think 2004

but they back dated it all the way back to 2002.

Actually, in some cases you DO have to jump through

hoops for back pay! My case was approved in 2005 and I

just got my back pay at the end of last year! My

lawyer didn't seem to want to do anything in assisting

with the backpay because he said his job was just to

gather medical evidence and supply it to SSA. After

SSA dragging around, I finally called my local

congressman and had my backpay in 2 weeks (but that

was after 2 years of anything not being done)

Can I ask how long it took you from the time you applied?

[ ] SSDI

I am in shock...I received a very large check today from Social Security.

Evidently, I won my SSDI case. I thought for sure that I would have to

appeal it.

I urge anyone out there who is disabled to file as soon as you can. I used

an attorney and it made it easier for me.

Dorothy,

The large check is more then likely your back pay. I got a lawyer

when I filed and I got approved in 6 months. I agree, anyone who is

thinking about filing for SSDI, get an attorney.

I can tell you from my experience that it took from mid November to early

February to get my approval.  I did not have to go to additional doctors or do

anything aside from an over the phone interview with SS...no attorney was

needed.  I guess my records spoke for themselves.  I only had RA for 3 years at

that point.

3 months must be a record for an SSDI approval!! That's amazing!

I hated to give up the money to the attorney, but I feel it was worth it.

My head was so messed up last winter that I was lucky I knew my name. I

considered trying to do it myself, but I'm glad I went with the attorney.

Dorothy,

That is GREAT news! I am so glad that you have that behind you. Your

records were probably precise. Well done.

From what I have read in this group, I think what state you are in

also has a lot to do with how long it takes. I don't know first hand

yet but I do know that it is coming for me and in all honesty, I am

kind of scared to tackle it.

Hi Dorothy,

Congrats!!!!!!  That is great.  Since i am younger (30) they denied me and i

have to wait for a hearing.  I got a lawyer but after i got the denial letter.

i guess i should have done it before and maybe i would have got it right away.

has anyone had to go thru the hearing????  just wondering what to expect.  i

know the lawyer will go over it with me but all the info is better.  i cant wait

to get my back pay as well.  we are really struggling to make ends meet.

thanks

I am in shock...I received a very large check today from Social Security.

Evidently, I won my SSDI case. I thought for sure that I would have to

appeal it.

I urge anyone out there who is disabled to file as soon as you can. I used

an attorney and it made it easier for me.

Does anyone know, to get ssdi, must you have worked in the past several years?

I stopped working three years ago because I was feeling bad then, but never went

to doctor. The bad pain didnt start until this year. a
