I have been taking Vioxx for 3 years now. Been mostly

taking 50mg at night, and if I ever forget to take the

tablet at night then next day I feel like I'm 100 years

old.

Have not noticed any stomach problems, but I did change my

diet significantly (eg. gave up coffee & tea and started

taking peppermint tea which settles your stomach, etc) to

cater for the extra toxins in my body from the vioxx.

Cheers, Allan

Vioxx works well for me. I wish the 25mg did the trick but I have to take

50mg to feel relief.

Is the 24 mgs working because it doesn't help me?

I have been told that 50mg is bad for the liver. That is why I don't take the

50mg every day. Have you had liver functions monitored during this time?

I am very allergic to both VIOXX and Celebrex (extreme nausea and brusing on

palm of hand). I have been taking 175mg of indomethacin per day for 6 months

without any problems.

I have an ulcer (from a couple years ago due to too many NSAIDs, prednisone and

Celebrex). I told this to my new rheumy when he prescribed the vioxx and he

said that it was safe on the stomach. Should I be worried? I take 25mg.

As far as I know 25mg is the max daily dose for long term use. 50mg

can be used up to 5 days. I am using 25mg which I take at night so I

feel good in the AM.

I take 50 mg on the weekends so I can play golf without pain. I tried

both Celebrx and Vioxx and found the Vioxx to be better. So far I

have had no side effects, but I haven't had a blood test since I have

been taking it. It would be interesting to take a poll for Vioxx vs.

Celebrex for effectiveness and side effects.

Hope this is useful.

There are days when I still take 50. However, I forgot my medicine this

morning as I left to sponsor the high school senior trip. After stock car

racing, bumper boats, driving range, 36 holes of miniature golf followed by

two hours at the zoo and three hours on a bumpy school bus--I think 100mg

might be in order! It only takes being w/o it to know how well it works.

YES! I can't imagine anyone telling you it was safe on the stomach. Does

he know you had ulcers? Be sure to take it with food and let him know the

minute you have any discomfort.

My rhuemy said he has has patients on 50mg Vioxx long term with no bad

effects. He left me on it for over a year. I was the one that decided to

try to reduce. My GP said just what you did. He had a fit that I was on

50mg for more than 5 days!

If you've had an ulcer, vioox can be a problem. If it doesn't hurt then your

ulcer probbly isn't acting up. Try to always have food with the vioox so it has

something besides your tummy to chew on.

I actually got hemorrhoids using Celebrex (it is listed as a side effect if you

read all the small print, about 1% of people on the drug get them....just my

luck) so I switched to Vioxx. Haven't had a problem since, actually think Vioxx

is better at reducing the inflammation and pain in any event.

Thanks. I'll be sure to always take it with meals. Got my ulcer on caliber so

I am very weary about using vioxx. Guess I'll wait and see. Right now just

want to feel better.

He knows I have ulcers. It's been a while since they have acted up though so I

am hoping they are gone (I remember the pain from them and it was horrible)! If

my stomach starts I'll stop the vioxx. I know when Celebrex first came out they

advertised how weak it was on the stomach. Now they have to warn about possible

stomach problems and ulcers. Turned out it wasn't any safer on the stomach than

the old NSAIDs. I am sure vioxx is the same.

take care,

Hi Pat,

In answer to your question, I tried Celebrex a few months ago and

found it didn't do very much for me at all, so I went back to

Ibuprofen. Then, last week, I switched to Vioxx at the request of my

doctor (I have to have minor surgery in a month -- the doctor said I

can't take ibuprofen 2 weeks before the surgery but that vioxx would

be ok). I didn't think vioxx would work very well because celebrex

didn't work and both are cox2's. But was I ever wrong -- it works

very well! And I like it better than the ibuprofen because one pill

lasts all day (25mgs). I think I'll stay on it even after the

surgery.

Pat,

I took Vioxx for RA for about 9 months. I found it to work great, at least

for me, as did Celebrex earlier. Luckily, I have now been able to get off

all NSAID drugs.

NSAID drugs should alleviate the symptoms of RA, but they normally do not

bring about remission. I suggest that you try Vioxx for two weeks. If you

do not experience a noticeable improvement, move on to something else.

Hi Pat,

I had a good experience with Vioxx for a little over a year but then

after that I noticed that my legs started swelling up. I found out that

this was a side effect of the Vioxx and I had to get off it. The

swelling went away a few weeks after I got off the Vioxx. I liked Vioxx

while I was on it as it really helped the pain but was surprised that I

had this side effect reaction. If you do get on it, just know that you

should watch out for any side effects. Just wanted you to know my

experience.

My daughter was on Vioxx briefly before she was diagnosed with SD. (Now

that she has tapped into this site, she may even put in her own two cents'

worth about it!) All I can say is, " It wasn't pretty. " Her feet swelled

also. These drugs cannot be taken over long periods of time; in my

daughter's case, it was a VERY short period of time, as I recall.

Lee-Anne,

A mix of medications and food supplements that has worked for me may not

work for you, since our diseases and our bodies are different.

I cannot tell what exactly put me in remission, since I take a number of

things. The AP is clearly the major factor. I am currently taking the

following: 100 mg of brand name Minocin every other day (was 100 mg every

day), two FloraMore probiotic capsules, a vitamin and mineral supplement,

glucosamine / chondroitin sulfate, one MSM capsule, two CMO capsules, and

two measuring teaspons of Carlson brand cold liver oil. I cannot overstate

the importance of fish oil.

During the first two years of my RA (which started in September 1999), I

took Prednisone, Plaquenil, Methotrexate, Celebrex and Vioxx -- but not at

the same time. I could never detect any beneficial effects from

Methotrexate and Plaquenil, except that Methotrexate did not allow me to

get well from a common cold that lasted for months.

The other major factor is diet. Avoid bad foods. Avoid steak and bad fats.

Eat lots of salmon.

Regards, Harald

Hey, Marge! Yes, Patti (my daughter) is on the flagyl too. The only NSAID

she ever took, fortunately, was the Vioxx. That was before we found her AP

doctor, Dr. Sentef. He's your doctor too, right? He told her last week

when we saw him that she could cut back on the flagyl. Since late February

of 2001, she has taken 500 mg twice a day and he said to cut back to 250 am

and 250 pm (I think). She had complained of some slight side effect from it

but don't remember what it was. What's your dosage? And how far do you

have to travel to see Sentef?

Dear Harald,

What is the CMO you mentioned? (This is probably something obvious and simple

and I've just made a complete idiot of myself by asking.)

Ellen
