Vioxx comes in 12.5 and 25 mg tablets. I have been on 25 mg since

last September and I think it is a better anti-anti-inflammatory than

others I was on. I am happy that I have had no stomach problem with

it as I sometimes did with others.

Recently Vioxx was approved for dosages of 50 mg. I have heard that

50 mg could be taken " a few times a week " and I heard " daily " . The

most recent thing I read stated that there is no conclusive evidence

that more is better beyond the 25 mg daily. My rheumy has bad knees.

When I went in this spring I was having trouble and the Vioxx dosage

had just been approved for the 50 mg dosage. My rheumy stated that

he was now taking Vioxx at the 50 mg dosage. He wrote my prescription

so that I could take that dosage too. After 6 wks or so I went back

and told him I didn't think the 50 mg had made much difference. He

told me he reached the same conclusion and was back to 25 mg. I am

also back to 25 mg. I am also on methotrexate (20mg. injections),

plaquinil, Duragesic narcotic patch and a few others!

Another note: Celebrex and Vioxx are touted as the " same " because

they are both " 2 inhibitors " . This means that the process for

inhibiting inflammation is the same in these two drugs and yet

different from other NSAIDs. Celebrex came out first and therefore

more people are on it than on Vioxx. When I needed to change NSAIDs,

my rheumy told me he felt that Vioxx was stronger & more effective,

based on what he saw in his clinic. Everyone will have their own

opinion. If anyone takes one of these drugs and feels it is not

effective enough or feels that they may be experiencing side effects,

they should talk to their doctor about trying the other drug. As we

all know, drugs work differently for different people. Don't be

fooled in this case just because Celebrex and Vioxx are lumped

together as " the same " . Class dismissed!

Hi Judy,

I have been on 25mg per day of Vioxx since March. I have had good results and really notice if i miss a dose or two. I did experience swelling in my ankles for a while and so i started taking it at night instead of the morning and the swelling subsided. Good Luck!

Hi Judy - I'm on 25 mg. of Vioxx - going up to 50 as soon as my insurance

approval with my new insurance goes through.

Unfortunately, I don't think it's doing a whole lot for me.

I'm having a flare in my hands. Funny, I always thought those of you with

bad hands were lucky not to have it in the knees and hips since hands aren't

weight bearing. BOY WAS I WRONG! You use your hands for EVERYTHING. And

they throb and hurt constantly.

Ok, done whining for now,

I cant take Motrin either. I take Vioxx with my morning meds and eat right

then. No problems. Celebrex is also a -2 inhibitor and might be kinder

to your tummy. Lovey

When i took it the first time i noticed it working in about 2 hours. It helped take the edge off the pain for about 6 months and then it caused my muscles to burn, well aparantly, because after i quit taking it (after 6 months) i felt better. I think the minocin started working at that point and i only needed advil as needed from then on.

Dear ,

I started taking vioxx in February and had the swelling problem in my ankles in the middle of July. I was on vacation and eating all the wrong foods, so I attributed it to that for awhile. I had also started getting hives from something, late in June, so I don't know if that was the vioxx.

Sorry I didn't say earlier, but I forget about things unless someone reminds me sometimes.

love,

Gloria

I've been taking Viox for 6 months with no ill effects. I switched from Celebrex because the Celebrex gave me heart burn and it is supposed to be the most benign. ly, I think Ibuprofen works better for pain and inflammation ( not to mention for fever and stroke protection), but you must take multiple daily doses and it is much harder on your GI tract. It's always a compromise with effectiveness and side effects and everyone seems to react differently. You might try rotation of them all. Ask your MD.

Diane,

Vioxx is supposed to work with a once daily dose of 25mgs. However that

never worked for me and the doc up'd me to 25 mornings 25 nights. I can't go

without a second dose or I will stop functioning. I have been on the 50 for

over 1 year. Every now and then you need to get a liver function test to

make sure no hidden dangers are lurking.......none to date and I see

approximately 5 different docs and they all now my medication schedule and

nobody has ever reprimanded me for taking 50mgs. I guess your doctor just

worries too much or maybe he just doesn't understand the pain we get which

would be awful is he didn't. Good luck--------

I have been taking 50mg of vioxx a day for about a year now. I was taking

400mg of celebrex before that. I have stomach problems but I had those on

occasion prior to being diagnosed with PA and on all the meds.

The main reason I am on that high a dosage is because of the fact that I am

tall and heavy. Like most things how you react to drugs depends a great

deal on your body.

- I've been on 25 to 50 mg. a day of vioxx for over a year. I have no

clue what this doc. is so worried about but I certainly would ask. Like all

drugs, vioxx is probably excreted thru the liver and kidneys and possibly could

cause some long term problems, but then, so can tylenol.

Let us know if you find out anything.

Yes I'm on Vioxx long term. I have been taking 25mg

everyday for over a month. It isn't taking away all the pain but I can

tell it is helping me some. Until you mentioned it I didn't think there

were long term side effects.

Personal Note: I am also from KS. I now live in

Pennsylvania and have been here for 16 yrs. I miss KS and go back to see

my family and friends every Christmas.

Harlan..I was on Viox a year. I was on Celebrex first but it really tore up my

stomach. I started Enbrel two weeks ago and haven't taken a Viox since. None

too soon either since the Viox was starting to mess up my stomach also. I read

somewhere that the latest research indicated that the COX 2 drugs are really no

better on your stomach long term than the older stuff like Ibuprofen except you

only have to take it once a day. Ronnie E.

It's probably from the misrepresentation of the drug on it's release.

I had a reaction to it myself and a friend has a bleeding stomach now.

Hi ,

I'm no doctor but the last time I went to my OB for a yearly checkup he told

me that he takes Vioxx for OA in a shoulder and that he takes a childrens

aspirin when he takes Vioxx to counter the side effects of the Vioxx. Just a

thought.

,

I was also diagnosed with AIH in March 2002. My dr put me on

vioxx because I had a ton of back pain. Vioxx did absolutely

nothing for me. I was up to taking 2 in the morning and 1 with

lunch and nothing happened. They still haven't figured out

where my back pain is coming from and whether it is related to

the aih or not. I have been taking vicodin since April so I can

sleep at night and hope to wake up without a stiff back in the

morning. They ran some kidney tests and all were normal. It is

so frustrating to have unexplained, unresolved pain. I wish you

the best of luck with the vioxx and I certianly hope it works for you.

It didn't make a lick of difference for me though.

Vioxx is an anti inflammatory drug. Was he giving this to you for muscle

spasms or because he thought you needed an anti inflammatory medication? I

work for an Orthopaedist and this is a drug we use a lot. Just wondering?

I agree with Sue. My transplant docs get mad if I takes anti inflammatory and muscle spams drugs. Plus I heard recently that Vioxx can be dangerous for liver. All that take Vioxx talk to your doctor. Also want to mention that herb doctors herbal medicines are dangerous to the liver. Vitamin C blasts could put you in the hospital, and is not good for our livers. Your information is based on a normal liver not a sick one. They don't tell you that part. I only hope that most of you will take caution.

Hi Gayle and everyone: I saw this post about Vioxx and my doctor agrees Vioxx is not a good thing for a sick liver. I have pain in my neck and left thumb which is job related and my doctor put me on Vioxx for two weeks only. He said I must take something for it or it will get worse but take the Vioxx for two weeks and then don't take it again until the pain comes back strong. Even though I don't have AIH I guess he feels my liver has been stressed.

I tried to call 's Mom tonight on her cell but had to leave a message. I will try and get the number of the Sheraton tomorrow if I haven't heard from Grace. I talked to last weekend and she was in so much pain. She was hoping to get out of the hospital Monday but I don't know if she did. They weren't able to give her much pain medication and she said her shoulders and incision was really bothers her. She was ready to get out and go to the hotel she said.

Debbie have you heard anything? Will update everyone as soon as I know.

Dr. Neff decreased Jodi's Medrol last time she saw him but after seeing her last blood work she had to increase it again. He is hoping to get her off the steroids this year, sure hope he can.

It's very late, better get some sleep. Hope everyone has a good weekend.

I was going to be put on Vioxx for my carpel tunnel syndrome a couple of years ago...but ended up not being. I then saw a thing on TV about 6 months later where a whole bunch of people were sueing the company that made it due to I believe heart failure from the medication. Just wanted to share with you.....
