Dear Tom,

Deb from Vernon is really going through a rough time! You can pass on my email address to her, if you would like to. I also live in BC, about 5 hours from her.

I am wondering about her fall - does she have any mobility aids? If she is on Provincial Disability, they will pay for a wheelchair for her...not sure how Federal works, but she should definitely get in touch with the BC Division of the MS Society at 1- (toll free) or e-mail:info.bc@.... Web site: www.mssociety.ca . They should be able to help her and may even have someone in the area who could visit her for some Peer Support Counselling.

Another resource would be the MS Clinic in Kelowna...phone:1-. They have a team which includes a social worker, nurse, physio-therapist and counselling. (She may already go there for her "annual review.")

The Self-Help Group contact person for Vernon is listed as: Rene - phone 545-5723.

Kamloops (1 hour away) also has a very active Chapter of the MS Society - Phone toll free: 1-.

Hope that will be helpful. Wish I was in better shape - a few years ago I would have been able to jump in the car and run over there to visit her! In the meantime all I can do is pray for her and send love. Please do let me know how she is, when you hear from her again.

Best wishes, Marilyn

DEAR SHARON Sharon Marsden wrote:

So, tell me, what works for the weight problems and pains??? What seems to be working? I could use some of that! What do you take for pain?

I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON MY WEIGHT FOR TWO YEARS AND HAVE BEEN FIGHTING WITH MY THYROID THE SAME SO I HAVE NOT GOTTEN FAR BUT I HAVE CHANGED A LOT OF MY EATING HABITS SO I AM EATING LESS AND NOT MANY SWEETS NO BREAD. I CANNOT SEEM TO GIVE UP THE CHEESE THO. THE MAG I PICKUP UP AND SENT SOME OF THE THINGS ON TO THE GROUP HAD AN ARTICLE ABOUT THE LYMPH SYSTEM BEING CLOGGED AS A REASON YOU CANNOT LOSE WEIGHT

THE TEST IS TO GENTLY RUB THE AREA BETWEEN YOUR BREASTS. IF IT IS TENDER, YOUR LYMPH SYSTEM MAY BE CONGESTED . WELL WHEN I DID THE TEST IT WAS VERY VERY TENDER AND SO WAS ALL THE UPPER BODY AND SO I STARTED DOING THE GENTLE MASSAGE THEY RECOMMENDED AND THE STRETCHES ON THEIR LIST THEY ALSO HAVE A DIET THAT IS SUPPOSED TO GIVE THE LIVER A TURBOCHARGE AND FLUSH THE FAT OUT OF YOUR SYSTEM AND IT IS NOT TO BAD BUT IT DID INCREASE MY DIARREA

I AM TAKING STAFLEX ONE OR TWO EVERY 4 HOURS AS NEEDED BUT I DO TRY TO STAY AWAY FROM IT AS MUCH AS I CAN.

So have you been going for massages? You said the body rubs have helped. Was your skin tender or the muscles? I go sometimes for massage and it really does help. But it costs so much. Then my doc does 'healing touch' massage and that is very helpful too.

I HAVE BEEN DOING THE INSIDE OF MY ARMS AND UP TO THE ARMPIT WHERE YOU ARE TO DO SOME PINCHING AND ACROSS TO THE MID LINE THEN THE OTHER SIDE AND THE FACE AND LOWER JAW BONE. I ADDED THE STOMACH AREA.

I'm so glad to hear from you. Life isn't fair and it's easy to get to feeling sorry for myself. I fight that often..... so I understand.

ALSO SEEMS THAT ONCE I START GETTING OVER IT JOHN WANTS TO LOSE HIS TEMPER AT ME SO IT IS TEMPTING TO START ALL OVER.

THE PAIN THING IS MOSTLY IN MY LEGS AND I KEEP THEM UP A LOT AND IF I HAVE TO STAND I TRADE OFF WITH ONE ON A 5 INCH STOOL THEN THE OTHER. I DID GET ONE OF THE BODY BALLS AND JUST SITTING ON IT AND LIGHTLY BOUNCING GETS MY LEG MUSLES TO WORKING AND I DO LEG STRECHES MORE THAN THE REST OF MY BODY.

I ALSO THINK THE VITAMIN A AND D ARE BOTH HELPING ME FEEL BETTER I KNOW MY SKIN IS BETTER.

THERE IS ALSO AN ARTICLE ABOUT ZINC TITLED ALWAYS TIRED? SUBTITLES ARE HOW ZINC MAKES YOU HAPPIER AND HEALTHIER ---BETTER MEMORY AND CONCENTRATION -- STRONGER IMMUNITY -- CLEARER, SMOOTHER SKIN

SO I HAVE STARTED THAT TOO

GOING BACK TO THE DIET DARK CHOCOLATE IS SUPPOSED TO HELP WITH CHOLESTERAL AND IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU EAT TWO SERVINGS A DAY THAT IS 2 -3 OZ - SERVINGS SO I DO TREAT MYSELF TO THAT.

BUT I THINK THAT IS THE ONLY SWEET I HAVE HAD FOR ABOUT 2 MONTHS

I DO TRY TO BLOCK THE PAIN OUT ALSO

WELL I GUESS THAT IS ABOUT IT SO I WILL SIGN OFF FOR NOW

I am not familiar with an A1C reading of 271. If however this A1C reading

is indicative of an average glucose level of 271 over the past three months,

Then you are in trouble, and it is definitely time for you to make a change

in your life for the better or things will just get worse in the near

future.

I would highly recommend you first learn to do carbohydrate counting, since

this is the key to meals, medications and exercise.

While limiting calories is a good idea depending on a person's weight and

height, I think you would be better off counting carbs.

On almost a daily basis I did three months of posting my carb consumption,

medication dosage and exercise plus some other things before I finally

mastered carb counting, dosing medications and doing exercise.

If you are willing, this list serve group can help you do the szame.

an a1c of 271? I'm assuming you are not in a country that uses the same

measurement as Canada/US. anyone have a clue how to convert that measurement

to the US equivalent?

It is simple. Don't eat bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, cereal, or any carb

rich food since they break down to sugar in your blood and slaughter your

blood sugar levels. Replace those with green leafy veggies and healthy meats

since green leafy veggies and meats dont' spike your bgs hardly at all.

Well, Theresa

The best thing to do is cut down on your amount of carbohydrates. that

means only about 90 Grm of carbs a day. We have a carb list that can be

sent to you if you like. Lots and lots of fresh vegetables are the key. No

fruit and limited bread, rice, pasta, potatoes. it takes a lot of wil

power, but if you are determined, you can do it!However, I wonder if the 271

you gave us is your blood sugar rather than your A1C? It's not good that

way either if that is what it was. You might be needing insulin instead of

pills. Insulin can save whatever is left of your pancreatic cells and it is

not the worst thing in the world to have to do. but again, maintaining a

low carbohydrate diet is the key. Let us know if you want that list of carb

and count the amount of carbs you are eating a day. There are several

people on this list who cut their carbs and not only lost weight, but also

lowered their A1C considerably.

We know you can do it!

Theresa,

I am remembering ( I thinK) that you are from australia. If that is

correct, then you would divide 271 by 18 and that would be the American

version of an A1C. In that case your A1C would be 14.something.That is way

too high and I am glad to hear you are willing to learn how to count carbs.

,

If you live in the USA in Arizona, then it should be no problem in having

your physician give you the A1C reading instead of having to extrapolate it

to a reading of 14, which makes no sense, if you use an USA doctor and lab

to do the lab work.

Call the doctor's office and get your last A1C reading, which should be done

every three months for a diabetic who is under control. If the diabetic is

out of control as you seem to be, it should be done on a monthly basis until

you are in control. An A1C reading of either 10 or 14 is a sign that you

are seriously out of control of your diabetes, and you need to make drastic

changes in your diet and medications now to gain control over this

monsterous disease.

I emphasize the word NOW!

Well, theresa

since you are from my neighbor (I'm from California), your doc should be

able to give you an A1C numberThat 271 must be your blood sugar-and that of

course is still too high. Sorry, I thought you were the lady who has been

on the list occassionally who is from Australia! It would be real helpful

for you to ask your physician to send you to a nutritionist. They may not

tell yo about the low carbs that Dr. Bernstein recommends, but we have a

bunch of very helpful people on the list!

No, he didn't give me the numbers but when I go to the nutritionist I'm

sure they will send for my records.

Theresa.

A nutritionist means nothing in modern diabetes management. Most dietitians

and nutritionists are having diabetics use an exchange diet packed full of

carbs that will slaughter your sugars. Most have you eat bread, fruit, fruit

juices, starchy veggies, and say it is healthy. Healthy? It will kill a

diabetic. Ask the nutritionist if he or she is going to teach youhow to

carbohydrate count and see how many grams of carbs they put you on a day. If

they say more than 80 grams of carbs a day, I'd suggest to find another one.

If they are not going to follow the modern diabetic treatment of

carbohydrate counting and lowering carbs, pitch the nutritionist, we can

better help you IMO. BTW my brother is a registered dietician and I know my

stuff so does harry, Pat, and many others on list. After all, the

nutritionist is mostly taught by the American Diabetes Association. Harry,

care to comment some on the ADA?

I remember a post from in the past where he listed a typical meal

regimen that was recommended by the American Diabetes Association theADA. I

believe it recommended a total carbohydrate consumption per day of around

225 or 250 carbs per day. With this recommendation it is no wonder so many

diabetics go blind, have heart attacks, strokes and kidney problems, not to

mention other complications.

In my opinion the ADA recommends a killer diet, and I say that is the

literal truth.

*begin rant*

ya, the ADA recommends that a diabetic eat no less than 150 carbs a day. Who

needs that many carbs in their blood a day turning to sugar and slaughtering

diabetic blood sugars? When will people realize it is high blood sugar that

kills diabetics and causes *all* diabetic complications. It isn't the foods

you eat per say, it is the high blood sugars that cause the complications.

Well, the ADA certainly keeps drug companies in business that is for

certain. I used to go through 2 bottles of quick acting insulin a month on

the ADA diet and now 1 bottle of insulin could last me 3 to 4 months easy. I

change them monthly though to ensure maximum potency but that is just me.

Point being, diabetics don't need that many freaking carbs. Ticks me off

thinking of friends who have had blindness, kidney failure, legs amputated,

strokes, and so on all because of eating carb rich diets and all along being

told it is ok. It's rubbish! It isn't foods like meat, kidneys, fat,

strokes, that cause those complications in diabetics, it is the presence of

high blood sugar that does it.

, why not send a letter such as this to your local medical columnist

in the paper? Send it out just all over the place so more and more and

more folks

will become aware! Put it in church bulletins, in house publications,

loads of magazines for the blind, it should be common knowledge!

is right about the nutritionist. Let us know what he/she says and if

he gives you over 80 or 90 carbs a day, cut it in half and add more protein

and veggies.
